What do you think about that?
but that is TLDR for me
Stay classy, Grayson, whoever you are.
grayson perry is?
I suppose you guys haven't heard of backpacker hiphop either???
Think people who "know" about art have a massively inflated sense of how much the wider "non-art" world knows/cares about it. (Massive sweeping generalisation obvs)
he's been in the papers and the telly loads
Grayson Perry is a really interesting person who's worth finding out more about
I liked this quote from the article a lot
"Somehow, his world-view, his take on society, now so overlaps with the dominant narrative that it is like a Death Star hiding behind the moon. We cannot unpick his thoughts and feelings from the “proper, right-thinking” attitudes of our society. It is like in the past, when people who spoke in cut-glass, RP, BBC tones would insist they did not have an accent, only northerners and poor people had one of those. We live and breathe in a Default Male world: no wonder he succeeds, for much of our society operates on his terms."
Is this like getting a sticker at junior school?
The only quibble I have with it is his desperation to identify himself as working class and to draw the line of the Default Man at the point immediately above his head.
he says he comes from a working class background.
Bit reductive like but I'm not sure that matters.
telling GP that he should go and live in North Korea or something.
How dare you even try and make one of the more socially liberated countries in the world even better...
This colours my judgement of him.
I once worked for [redacted] and we put on a big conference where we invited him to be the keynote speaker. He wrote back saying it all sounded very interesting, but he didn't feel it was a topic he knew well enough to talk about confidently. Classic standard 'no' letter... Until he turned up, having bought a ticket he could have got for free, and sat in the audience all day taking notes.
To have the level of success he's had in contemporary art, to not be up his own arse, and still championing progressive causes, is rare indeed.
I've bumped into him at quite a few local events where he's there as a punter, rather than a guest. Big fan of cycling too.
Check out these. Haven't heard them all but thoroughly enjoyed those I have.
privilege exists and is an important thing to understand and if this article makes more people understand that, that's great. but this writing is annoyingly inconsistent, as far as i read.
He's now tweeting as Alan_Measles."
worth checking out the archive. No doubt some people would think its a bit lightweight and everything but there's some fairly interesting and stuff and its accessible and free.
he was on radio 4 this morning talking about the Default Man stuff, positive discrimination and middle class white men guarding their privileges. He's interesting and funny and gets his point across without preaching. I like him.
so i shan't be reading this
