Interested in the thought from people that care about the team (that's you).
or considering a cricket player a real sportsperson.
parody DiS account?
We think so.
and watching cricket at the same time.
and reading about people not caring about cricket, at the same time
in favour of the defendant
pretty sure it is just ICC, mate
out of the team.
I'd put good money on many of the accusations/opinions being held in the book about stuff like Peter Moores being a dick, Andy Flower being a bully, Prior being a vindictive turncoat etc. etc. not being backed up by a single other player.
Guy lives in his own little world.
He does have a point: Downton and the ECB are all jobs for the boys pricks, Jimmy, Broad and Swann while great players are very evidently bell ends quite a bit of the time. Andy Flower was very controlling and a very boring if effective coach so can see why they didn't like each other.
Also completely agree that English players should got to the IPL if they want to improve in the short form of the game, but they get dragged into the ECB's power struggle with India. Also asking sports people to be away from their young families for months on end is prehistoric, you surely want settled sports people and whatever helps them feel comfortable enough to focus on cricket is probably a good idea.
However I don't believe for a second he tried in any way to help the situation and I'm sure he is capable of and probably did undermine Cook, Strauss and Flower and y'know is a massive belm.
Like he says though scored more runs than anyone else and gave England supporters some of the most brilliant moments of watching cricket so probably deserved better.
he had to operate in the same power structure, in the same team, with the same captains, coaches and same centrally-contracted colleagues as everybody else. Every other player managed to get on with their jobs in a manner which a) didn't undermine the team and b) didn't lead to them falling out with every single person they encountered. Why couldn't Pietersen manage?
I think he got very preferential treatment for a very long time. And yet he STILL deserved better?
My point was that he deserved better than being scapegoated largely for other peoples failure in Australia.
Also I don't think it's too much of a stretch to draw conclusions about how cliquey the England side is.
I agree with that.
And yes the England side probably is horribly cliquey. I've seen enough of Swann and Anderson's HILARIOUS TWITTER BANTZ!!11! to know how grotesquely annoying I'd find that as well. Wouldn't let it get in the way of my job though. Can't fathom why KP deserves some kind of special kids-gloves treatment simply because he can't act like an adult.
...if the stuff about the fake twitter account being set up is true then, I sympathise with him there.
His job is to go out and score runs, he largely did that better than anyone else in the side, or at least more consistently over a long period of time. I think it speaks volumes that people like Vaughan and Fletcher thought managing him wasn't a problem whereas people like Cook, Moores and Downton do.
Think in any walk of life talent normally comes with ego and part of managing is getting the best out of that. ECB are happier having 6 average public school educated batsmen averaging 40 than an aggressive batting line up averaging 50 with the occasional fuck up. Look at Giles comments about Cook coming from the right kind of family to captain England. Just dark ages stuff.
didn't have to manage Pietersen misbehaving though did they? Don't think he was insubordinate, texting other teams and falling out with coaches for no reason when they were around.
I've no issue with Pietersen's batting. Even his kamikaze, selfish dismissals. Don't have an issue with anything he did out in the middle, but when enough people say that his value as a batsman is outweighed by the problems he brings to the entire team (and with quite a bit of evidence to back it up) then I'll happily jettison him. Not sure the whole `but he scores runs!!` argument was made especially in favour of Geoff Boycott by many people back in the day re: his impact on the team as a whole.
Also - you have to remember that the ECB actually made Pietersen England captain once. And the ECB in getting rid of him didn't take the side of Peter Moores, they sacked the pair of them. Kind of disrupts your overly-simplistic narrative about the ECB's conservatism vs. KP's renegade-ism but whatevs.
I miss his batting too. Trust me. But the reasons why he isn't in the team any more are largely his fault; not anyone elses.
how to manage talent better and it never got that far. I accept you can like or respect Andy Flower but the team was fucking boring for his entire tenure and I was glad to see the back of him. Also the only reason they had for sacking Pietersen this time round was that Downton though he looked disengaged, which seems a bit spurious.
I actually think he should have gone for good after the Strauss stuff as that was pretty appalling. However if they let him back they probably know what he's all about. Just seems to me that the pressure was on Cook, under performing players like Prior and the ECB on the whole after the winter and he was the easiest one to hang out to dry.
Comparison to Boycott is ridiculous as most of England's success since 05 had Pietersen performing to a high level as a massive part of it: 4 Ashes wins, T20 win, away win in India and getting to no 1. Others like Cook, Swann, Prior, Flintoff, Strauss, Bell, Broad and others have contributed well in parts but he pretty much always delivered until the last 18 months.
Interesting to compare him to Anderson who is probably the only other player to have contributed as consistently and despite the fact I'm in love with the guy he is definitely a dick and yet gets away with acting like it on and seemingly off the cricket pitch and yet gets complete backing. Different kind of dickery granted.
Anyway in short: Don't agree with the portrayal of him as detrimental to the side, don't really think for a moment he's innocent of being disruptive or a massive pain in the arse, don't like the ECB and do think with better management and leadership England could have got more out of their most talented player in a generation. But yeah whatevs
"I accept you can like or respect Andy Flower but the team was fucking boring for his entire tenure"
2010/11 Ashes was absolutely not boring. It was amazing.
but I don't think it's a stretch to imagine that some of his points are valid.
And if he wants to smash them all in a book - fair play to him.
surely something about 'his book is nuts would be better
The FIRST FUCKING POST should have been
"Is it nuts?" before all the sports bores got in and destroyed the mood. Fucksake. Get it together, people, you shit bastards.
Theo needs rebooting again.
Prior refers to himself in the third person as, "the big cheese"
Imagine having to deal with that?
the more it seems like Kevin Pietersen was basically Michael Bluth.
Imagine referring to yourself as 'the Big Cheese'. I doubt I'll read anything better today than KP slagging Matt Prior with this zinger: 'a Dairylea triangle thinking he’s Brie'.
but a funny one https://twitter.com/barneyronay/status/519203273287675904
Does on occasion become a bit of a parody of himself, but I thought his piece on the book was pretty good - http://www.theguardian.com/sport/2014/oct/06/kp-the-autobiography-barney-ronay-review
that South Africans are appalling.
People have been banging on about this for 18 months now and so far all I've seen is that KP - a certified prick - thinks some of his former team-mates are also pricks. It's not quite Watergate, is it?
"They put in the hard yards, kept making great songs.."
Liberty X people.
There haven't been any revelations as far as I can tell, all the stuff about bollockings, egos and man-children seems par for the course. All that stuff is going on when teams (in any sport) are winning, and no-one cares*, but when you're losing then everyone starts having a cry about anything.
*actually, when you're winning it's this kind of crap that's glorified
