What's on your mantelpiece? When do you usually have your first fire of the winter? What's your fuel of choice?
It's sort of fake white marble. It HAS - housemates key, housemates cash, some flowers, a hairbrush, and hanging above it a scorpion in a glass frame.
but we're about to move and they've gone and i can't remember what was there. candles maybe.
On it is: a set of dominos from Brazil (the grey box on the left); 3 drinks mats; 'new home' cards from when we moved in.
It's fully functional and everything, but the flat gets so warm anyway we hopefully won't need to use it until the depths of winter. Got a good supply of wood, not allowed to use coke/coal in our building apparently .
theres some candles in it though so i could pretend i've got a small fire going.
its all postcards and pictures on the mantle piece plus probably bits of cardboard and coins and receipts and stuff
But we had a kakelugn in our old place
Which was like this
And usually fired up around this time of year
But I'm considering reinstating the one in the front room. Has anyone done this, and is it particularly difficult (I'm assuming yes)?
When I say 'I', I mean I paid someone to do it for me. It's a bit messy, but only took the guy a day. The chimney hadn't been blocked, so it's ok to use. We haven't lit it yet though.
Here it is being done...
Might actually prompt me to get ours sorted now.
we have some photos and a candle
Our fireplace in our lounge doesn't have a mantlepiece. we have a woodburner and will fire it up when it gets down below 5 degrees. I need to build a woodstore in our garden first before i get a delivery, and need to get a fireguard.
the good old days
fire is just a gas one, works ok
sorry it is sideways
her fireplace is plastered over but i really like her new flat http://tinypic.com/r/10qju38/8
my boyfriend is watching a documentary about giant guinea pigs
fires can be dangerous if not managed correctly.
Not got a shelf thingy though
Don't use either.
Should block them to stop us losing heat up there really. Or put grates in and start using them.
Could just forget about it though. Seems easier.
Initially she stuck a picture of Gregg Wallace's face (no idea) over the ex. The proportions were off. It was nice.
Then a new boyfriend was coming over. So she put (and still hasn't replaced) literally the worst photo of me in existence, doing a peace sign next to a giant frog.
my mam and dad have a picture of themselves at their wedding on the mantlepiece
and also a picture of themselves on holiday on the built up bit at the bottom of the fireplace.
absolute narcissists. don't have a single picture of me up in the house.
my grandma used to have those dog ornaments on hers. and a bronze viking.
its got the usual sort of stuff on it
a) pair of pewter candlesticks
b) family photo
c) commander farsight (warhammer)
d) serpentine candle holder
e) rocksalt tealight holders
g) a carved welsh type lovespoon
h) a fascinator (except not for the head but for the mantelpiece)
I) super monkeyball monkeys, in their balls
j) a ships decanter
k) a vase with 3 huge flowers in (one pink, one green one yellow)
(Its a big mantelpiece, about 6ft long)
I mostly burn ash in the fire(multiburner stove), its the best firewood.
