Here's for those who don't spend their lives stuck in books talking about nothing they experience in their every day lives i.e.: being working class, being around the LGBT community and GOD FORBID calling people 'loonies' and 'trannies'. How about live in the real world and start involving yourselves with the people you talk and study about?
Love a bit of Bragg too.
^this is coming from someone who is working class (and currently living in poverty), queer, disabled (mentally, physically AND neurologically), has a history of mental health problems, not 100% white and doesn't really bother with books tbh
also a white-passing ciswoman but who isn't
stop telling what to feel and think jesus thats bullying more than "i thought this board as a whole was really pro-mental health education and anti-stigma yet you still use slurs"
are you seriously justifying the fact that you don't care about marginalised groups of society (transpeople, the disabled and mentally ill) with the fact that you like billy bragg
i don't think we should have to justify not having really shit politics because someone's assumed we don't ourselves have direct experience of those things. i'm a queer, disabled feminist. i'm not "around" those communities or "studying" them, i'm part of them. and i come from a working class family (have never lived in poverty). there's a really problematic tendency to associate certain things, particularly trans* liberation, with the university educated elite who know all about queer theory and everything. it totally ignores the experiences of working class trans* folk.
considering that in the thread where the word "loonies" was discussed, i quite clearly highlighted that i have mental ill health (to the point that i can't do certain things and at the moment cant work and am having to claim sickness benefits) it's kinda shocking that you've decided to have a go at me for this.
In an ideal world the voices of marginalised people wouldn't be ignored in favour of, or co-opted by, the educated 'elite', but this forum would be a better place if people were informed and arguing on behalf of others - not least because it might encourage more people to post here who otherwise wouldn't.
Just because someone doesn't have the personal experience of the cause their fighting, doesn't mean that the thrust of their argument is illegitimate.
what was your opinion on the level 1 vs level 2 vegetarians arguement the other day
I don't think I saw you get involved
revealing a huge red flashing turnip. That's their weak spot.
I'm dubious about the environmental impact of Quorn anyway, so don't really eat it (I don't eat meat for carbon footprint reasons mainly).
Going vegetarian or vegan is a great opportunity to really explore and get to know flavours, textures and nutrition, rather than just falling back on the easy hit of meat. I personally think that using something like Quorn is an admission that you can't really cope without meat, but if people are too attached to the idea or don't have the knowledge to cook without using it's bulking, texture and nutritional properties, then I'm not going to shame them - it's still much better than eating meat, obviously.
I have less problem with tofu, because it's not a meat substitute for people who choose not to eat meat as such - it's been used in traditional cooking for years, but still you have to be aware of the farming methods of soya beans in the world.
i think people on here have quite often argued that i should stop talking "on behalf of" certain groups, when i've said stuff about transphobia or something. they don't realize that they too, by arguing for their 'right' to say certain things about trans* people, are talking over them.
i know a lot of people on here would say they don't have any friends who are trans* and i dont think that is itself problematic. but i actually have spent a lot of my time listening to and campaigning alongside other queer people. when you attack people doing their best to be allies and trying, as far as possible, to relay some of those perspectives which would otherwise be silenced and ignored, you're just excluding those perspectives altogether. this exact thing happened yesterday when i quite politely told people that a friend of mine had said that they wouldn't want to be out as trans on dis. instead of reflecting on why that might be and taking time to consider that fact, they had a go at me.
I feel like a bit of a wang for my response to that.
Who talk about feminism and equality but think it's acceptable to bully people in order to make a point.
But really I don't think anyone wants to alienate anyone though ya know?
DiS is what you make it, keep posting in the direction you want things to go.
>Throw in politics, particularly the politics of elitist social justice war mongering, and you now have “socially responsible” house nerds looking down on the independent, uncouth, and unfocused or undisciplined field nerd as socially irresponsible and in need of wrangling.
It’s pretty much the same attitude that SJWs in established media have overall toward the general public – that attitude that leads to “If you don’t accept my worldview it’s because you’re stupid and immoral, not because I might be wrong.” It’s an entitled attitude of intellectual and moral superiority that comes from a very bad place and is threatening to take us all to that place, except that those bottom rungs are never going to make it there because we can’t.
they'll do that in their own time, at their own pace. demanding that people take steps to make society more equal is just rude and it must get really grating for people having to listen to me :(
you and a few other posters (Royter, NickDS, labsmoney235, Gringo) have really impacted on my worldview over the years. so thanks!
Although Mehodor is remaining true to brand, I see.
but she's doing it in a way which is almost illegible.
DON'T TREAD ON ME
poster/post interface up there?
I am drunk and a 'train wreck' but I really am fed up of those 'defending' people they probably have little to do with.
DIS is already a haven of middle-class indie's...and the 'code of conduct' is unnecessary.
If DIS can't allow freedom of some speech then fuck it.
I am guilty as charged (of this)
I'm a bit of a shit really.
(wish I'd post less)
but I would probably try to make it more family friendly.
White, brown, red, spring
I WILL FUCKING CUT YOU
What joy you bring
then try putting a damp towel around your neck or wearing some glasses
this was a pissed two in the morning post, please dear god let's not turn it into the third indentical shitfest in as many days xx
have a tea and a biscuit
not getting back up cause it'll take me half an hour to get back down the stairs 💁
I'm sorry to hear that.
I'm in a strange office today and I have no idea where the tea stuff is.
at least i could have tea if i really wanted some
(hope you feel better soon.)
had a fall last week (i am 70 now), already posted about it fifty times or something. previous health conditions have made everything worse but i'm slowly getting there. just upset that i haven't been able to really milk it. had two cups of tea made for me and that's it.
- Mod review
- now this
anyway, please yourselves, folks! Fidel, you need to join AQOS :)
OBVIOUSLY I have flounced off into the sunset forever and yet...
Don't invoke "freedom of speech" for something like this, it's what awful people do and you're far from awful. No freedoms are being oppressed here.
Sorry for being a hypersensitive man-baby the other day. It will never happen again (it will TOTALLY happen again). Hope all is forgiven but, thanks to the robustness of sean's boards, never forgotten.
I expect your much-deserved mockery below.
it's just like the old days!
and it lasted a full 24 hours
and then he suddenly quit in a flurry of remorse for it =')
what happened to his DJ persona account anyway?
I mean, if we're cracking down on words like 'loon', or even 'hysterical', we should probably put pay to using terms that portray men as being physically or emotionally unstable as well.
that ones for the littlejohn's of the world.
why not just 'baby'? like men being wee cry babies isn't expected. whereas women are kinda immature anyway cause being a child is a feminine trait.
which refs a specific sort of immature adult dude, rather than contrasting properties of babies with properties of males. idk
do some work catstro
I like man-baby. It's fun.
(hugs all three for slightly longer than anyone is comfortable with)
there will be a discussion about that somewhere. i think the same thing about manchild.
Will get over 200 replies as well. :'D
Can we have it over here. I'm sure it will work as a unifier.
Quite embarrassed that I drunkenly admitted liking Billy Bragg :(
bumps don't faze me, can veer round corners. not at phone-checking level yet.
I did lie to some kids who asked if I could wheelie the other day, though. I was passing through the bus station, which was a good enough excuse not to demonstrate.
That the obviously intelligent and compassionate people who bring up issues regarding prejudice on this forum are middle class cause they might have additionally read some books on certain subjects. Sounds like really horrible hate of working class people
You can't be working class and live in soho
Said with Gary busey truth and love from my heart
are not highly educated. Doesn't mean they're not intelligent, but they're not gonna wanna get involved with all the long wordy arguments that read like sociology essays.
Doesn't mean those arguments shouldn't be made though.
Not sure i'm even making sense here.
