Worth a read if so http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/sep/09/blocking-adverts-napster-for-the-publishing-industry
this wasn't about DiS, this was about the entire ecosystem of music, the internet and everything else.
Not everything is about DiS, sadly.
what about the several month's worth before that? and next week's? yeahhhh.
For which, I am sorry. And will try to get it fixed as soon as I have funds. Developer has said he'll take a look in next few days.
and what makes it "unusable"?
I use it from iPhone all the time. Never get logged out.
so the text fills only half the width of the screen. Normally, that's fine because you can zoom in. But with some ads, when you zoom into the page, the ad baloons over everything. Thus rendering it unusable.
this is due to a bug with the changes we made last week.
We've figured out what the issue is, just haven't had developer time to get it fixed (not helped by the fact I owe them money)
IPhone 5c have a giant Bose advert always trying to take over the screen, can't even click on the ad.
If you go to reply, the ad drops down and covers the entire screen.
on an HTC one x. It's almost completely unusable. Always logged out, massive Bose ad which takes up most of the screen.
but on just a regular HTC One
but DiS has become enough a part of my day to live with it - do your best Sean (and the rest of you don't adblock)
and checking you don't have any odd settings on? I using the whole iCloud password rememberer with Safari on desktop sorted it all out (not that I have been able to logout from mobile site since)
i love you sean
on all websites
but especially on this one
and I used to be dead against it, for reasons stated in the argument... but it got worse.. namely on this site. So this site is no longer green lit and ad-blocked. Put the donation link on your webpage, maybe on the next to the PM's or something, and maybe more will donate. Because with the current ad's I think it's going to drive more and more people to adblock (as I said I was SO against adblock that it took A LOT to make me use it on any website and it finally pushed me to it).
If it makes you feel any better I donate monthly and just speaking harsh truths but with DiS in it's current state I think it's just adding fuel to the problem. Especially on mobiles where the website is basically unusable 50% of the time.
There's no excuse, but it's available, so I use it for my own gratification.
Much like pirate downloads of films and music - they're there... I can get away with making use of them... so I do. There's no excuse at all, I can't justify it in any moral sense... but at least I ain't kicking dogs outside the Good Ship in Kilburn, know'm'sayin'? And if They take away muh adblock and muh torrents... I won't be too mad.
eg roll-overs, ones with sound, ones that are animated, ones that take up the whole screen, ones that autoplay.
I tried using DiS without adblock, and go back every six months or so to see if it's better, but I can't risk it with adverts that do that.
I whitelist as much as possible, but DiS made it onto the blacklist last week. I don't mind ads in general and I've put up with a lot of obnoxious ones on here, but I don't have any qualms about blocking when I keep getting stuff that pops up over the entire screen.
Do you have a rare and deadly allergy to full-screen ads?
Napster was really good for music though
looks like shit though and gives me a headache.
Having avoided them for many years, those sidebar things are awful.
Sorry Sean, off they go.
Do you have a kickstarter yet?
Primarily because I took on some other jobs instead, so wouldn't have time to fulfil anything people pledged for, and actually most of what I wanted to do to make money was gonna cost a fair bit to do... you can't do just do a Kickstarter for fixing code.
The album sales will fund fixing the website.
/anything playing sounds/autoplaying videos/flashing gifs, or if the site is literally not usable with the adverts
found it a bit ironic that on that guardian page the stupid video in the middle stopped the page loading properly for me
and consequently have to suffer, but its a pain that Im willing to endure, just for you sean, I show my love for you with my pain (it makes my experience glitch, I refresh and it appears that dis has disappeared from my screen....but no I have to scroll down to find dis now......also sometimes I get flashing screen from an advert or two, plus I have got windows 8 and use touchscreen laptop so Im always inadvertently hitting adverts I don't want (I have extraordinarily large thumbs)
because everyone stopped buying £17 hmv cds, and itunes and spotify and youtube came along. so napster were the good guys.
fyi i turn adblock off to see if there's any rhythm nation ads around sometimes.
but these ads are quite annoying
Facebook Platform stuff, too. And twitter plugins. And autoplaying flash stuff.
(Not knowingly on Android Opera Mobile Classic, which is ~75%+ of my time on here, but can't see any ads on the social board at the mo.)
Anyway, “like the Napster of the advertising industry” is a really fucking stupid thing to claim and stands up to zero scrutiny. It's a really really shit line.
And to be tbh, the 150m and 41% figures seem oddly low.
That aside, the thing is, there's nothing stopping you, or any other site, from self-hosting well selected and behaved adverts rather than serving 'em up via an easily blocked obnoxious third party. That'd fox adblock innit.
Or, it's a technical triviality to block access to adblock users. Do that.
And what was that thing about how the punning and pub quiz team name threads make up 71% of income?
Look, let's get to brass tacks. How much is each reasonably active adblocking user costing you (net, after accounting for their content creation)? How much money do you want from me, bro?
i know its bad for the websites' revenue, but so many sites i like have slowly got worse and worse with ads. anything visually intrusive (especially stuff that slows the loading times/does it in stages) or with audio really irritates me. if adblocking is so damaging then i think at least part of the onus is on the sites to be a lot more responsible with what kind of ads they host, or else come up with alternate revenue streams.
is really bad for your mental wellbeing, and I value that more than the websites I visit.
but am confident that there are a sufficient number* of mums & wankers who don't that it balances out my actions
*based on extensive research of course
I also allow all pop-ups. I see using the internet as being like that game you have in the pub where you have a gun and you have to shoot all the bears or something.
of Evil Sean Adam's evil children.
then advertising would have to adapt and become more and more intrusive and integrated with websites. More sponsored content, puff pieces and the like. So maybe we SHOULDN'T use adblock. #makeuthink
I don't normally use adblock as I work in marketing and I need to be able to see them but those background ads on DiS are so NSFW I had to install it on chrome.
But then I work in online advertising so it would be somewhat hypocritical of me if I did.
but only from this year, ads seem to have got sooooooooooo much worse recently. i wouldn't it if the ads were less intrusive / didn't break sites
