pretty long. mainly about death, corruption and exploitation in wrasslin
It's interesting, makes you feel like a bit of a shit for enjoying something so horrible (though the same can be said of lots of sports, and other activities for that matter).
however exploitation is rife in wrestling. one of the largest none-unionized workforces in the US.
the indie scene in the US is kinda like the unpaid internships in the art sector here; you're expected to work for free to get your foot in the door and even then there is no guarantee of anything coming from it. the difference is of course that wrestlers lay there bodies on the lines too.
incidentally, the UK scene is better and healthier than it ever has been.
this one is pretty much all about the US.
Surely it pales in comparison to groups like Walmart workers, McDonalds staff etc...
Interesting comparison can be drawn to the current legal battle over the future of the NCAA (basically university sports), where the athletes don't get paid because it's "amateur" yet the sports generate billions in revenues. Some student teams have tried to unionise, or fight for their image/merchandising rights etc.
meant to mention its transient, centralised nature too (again, in regards to the independent scene).
i'm not aware of the NCAA issue. i remember South Park riffed on it though on an episode
Pfft posted about the jacobin article yesterday and nobody was interested cause it was in a thread about earthquakes
Once you reach a certain level - not even a high level, we're talking local federation regular - the people are almost uniformly terrible.
Doesn't surprise me one bit.
Do you have any vids?
In front of about 200-300 people. I was the bad guy and I wore a cape and a phantom of the opera mask I painted with Warhammer paints to make it look metal. I actually got offered another gig by a scout who was there (my trainer was a well known name in British wrestling, Jeff Kaye for World Of Sport fans), but I was leaving to travel 'round Europe shortly after so it never came to anything.
I think someone must have a video somewhere, but I'm not in touch with anyone who might have it anymore :(
Not a regular touring federation or anything. I think they gave it a name consisting of three totally bad-ass letters, as is standard. XZF!!! or something. Can't remember - I've looked for it on Youtube to no avail.
Found a video of the dude I fought against though (the guy with the crutches) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAcnvgDlRyY
Like when I was about 10 or 11, I remember liking the Hardy Boys and RVD and stuff. Now I just hear about it when one of them commits suicide or kills someone or something.
I had a thought a few months ago that How Soon Is Now? would be a fucking badass theme tune for a wrestler if he came out with all flashing black and white strobe lights.
I hope you won btw that guy looks like a complete bedwetter.
I kinda had to, being the bad guy - with a one-off show there's not much time to establish a storyline where the heel might get the upper hand occasionally.
I like the idea of a wrestler having The Smiths as a theme tune :D Most wrestling fans are stuck in an early noughties nu-metal time warp. Mine was 'Babalon AD' by Cradle of Filth.
I would totally recommend someone trying it out at a local school if they're interested though, it's great fun and makes you feel pretty invincible. It doesn't seem to matter too much if you're a bit out of shape or a bit too old, there's always a role you can play, as long as you're willing to take a bit of punishment.
didnt think it would be possible to hate Rick Santorum even more
I'm not saying you're a bad person, but... you have shitty taste and should probably stop.
so you're in good company.
