People shouting about it sexualising children and all sorts on the Twitter.
In summary: couldn't give a shit.
See you all tomorrow at 9am, remember, it's Friday, so jeans are allowed!
Anyone who's not here but needs a copy of the minutes, just PM Fidel.
which I imagined would be full of beardy glasses wearing helvetica-frotting psueds, are going a bit "WILL SOMEONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN?" on it.
Depp was embarrassing.
but they've *well* blatantly courted that, no?
they went for a fashion take on spoiled childhood. Beauty Pageant Verruca. If anything it's a pretty solid indictment of ludicrous child pampering.
If it IS about the sexualisation of children it's skewering it, not promoting it. People are quite, quite dense.
Penguin is not on that list.
because you happen to work in a 19th Century book shop, xylo.
so have first-hand information about how good a company they are! Weird!
Imagine if I had a degree in book publishing/editing and have spent vast amounts of time dealing with the industry or something!
But you've got me there: I don't even know what a book is. I just love commenting on stuff.
Someone buy him a pack of large greens to try to stem the bleeding!
I don't know how to say it in any other way than: the industry is very genuinely doomed. Print publishing offering less and less in the way of incentive to join a company is not unique to Penguin. Because there is no light at the end of the tunnel. It's just one almighty winding down.
Despite that though, Penguin is pretty loved by its employees even post-merger.
they have an xbox 360 :(
think this might be a record? tbh we should have tools for tracking this sort of thing.
Sneering so much will surely have long term breathing ramifications
and their terrible, industry-worst employment practices
Just checking. I'm sure you are and it's not another long-distance snide opinion without basis.
You're BOTH wrong.
*you* I will cede to.
How are you going to use it here?
The Bell Jar as chicklit is pretty fucking weird. Still not as embarrassing as "adult" Harry Potter covers though.
although it has the hallmarks it doesn't come across as a chicklit cover to me. The face in the mirror hints at something darker.
It's not a terrible cover in and of itself and I think they probably tried to bridge a gap between chicklit and something deeper and darker but (for me) failed. Bit more on it here: http://www.theguardian.com/books/2013/feb/01/the-bell-jar-new-cover-derided#
The Chrysalids is such an understated story, cover gives an utterly false impression of the book.
I've always thought Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is actually fairly dark for a children's book which makes the cover whilst slightly unsettling quite appropriate.
so marketed at an older audience, right? I imagine the Quentin Blake one will still be in the children's section.
Sent from my Bookshop
a different cover for every child in the book.
ive never read the book and cant remember the film though.
some of them look good but I'm sick of the penguin classic motif. too ubiquitous
and need their heads stamping on. Dark book has dark cover thats nowhere near as dark as the actual story. What a bunch of pricks
I don't think it's appropriate. far too creepy for a kids book.
it's not like the innocent images I remember from children's books when I was young.
Hope they do that 5 different covers for each child in the story someone mentioned above.
Makes it more recognisable as that character.
lovely irony in pseudo intellectuals judging books by their covers and so on.
And not US dissers of course. (Real intellectuals here).
And yes it is obviously the adult edition, and recognisable by the font/layout as one of them books to be put on the Cult/Recommend table.
According to google. Same author, published in the 80s, widely purchases now, point still stands. (And it's not like it's ABOUT something relevant ie that Tarantino film.)
Everyone knows what that book is about.
i like the design but SUCH spoiling
The one with the 'sexualising children' claim is utterly, utterly shit.
(assuming they aren't going to do one for every kid), but that just gives a great deal of the plot away. I'd be fucked off if I were reading that to a twelve year old, they got into it and then worked out what was going to happen by studying it.
relatively small, each doing something representative of their character, with a sinister balonz in a purple hat filling the background in shadow and sinisterly looking down on them.
theogb playing with a calculator
marckee stood with his arms folded looking snooty and smug...
Yep, pretty much
the man can't even colour inside the lines
as in "best ones"
