for the week or until it gets too big.
Chelsea to resign Drogba apparently. Weird.
has reinforced my feeling that club football is about 5% actual football, and 95% bullshit/politics/anti-bants/Mourinho/arguments about transfer fees.
I want another international tournament.
I'm half tempted to get a season ticket for one of the championship clubs and folow that, as I think that's going ot be a belter of a legaue.
I've not even decided whether I want to go otmorrow nogiht or not.
I found out that The admiral were showing the friendly on saturday and was going to go and watch it but it was stowed by the time i got there.
we need you back up, and we need to sort out the coefficient so there's no more of this champions league pre-qualifying nonsense. It's no good for my blood pressure.
Get to see if LvG can impose his philosophy on united and FC United will have their own ground.
Miles better than the sense of dread I had about Moyes pre season last year
"you know what Liverpool fans, great bunch o lads"
"That dive by Robben was wonderful"
bring back the Danish lad and the Manc, I say
The former likely to mean curtains for Francois, who's supposedly off to Turkey. Still not overly enthusiastic about our transfer business, the squad does need more bodies but no effort seems to have beenade to recruit the Champions League quality players the team needs amd could reasonably expect to attract. Doubt Sanchez was ever a goer, but I'm sure we could have done better than Markovic for that much.
Can see them going a bit Spurs-ey.
I think their signings have been considerably better, Remy aside, than Spurs made after selling Bale.
That said, it takes a wee while for so many new players to gel.
and made Sterling/Suarez/Coutinho a lot better. Think there's a good chance that they'd find the league harder without him anyway, but Champions League football on top of that is going to leave them knackered.
7th is a good guess.
but think they'll fight for the CL places before getting 5th.
I actually like the remy signing as an alternative to sturridge. they've got lots of good options but spurs proved last year that quantity doesnt necessarily lead to quality. think they need to tighten up at the back considerably if they want to get top 4 this year, they're unlikely to score 100+ goals again so conceding ~50 is a complete no-go.
I'd love Southampton ver. 1 to finish above Southampton ver. 2
That would be delicious.
but I don't think Liverpool's signings are looking that good in comparison yet. It's easy to forget given that they've been complete pony, but Soldado, Paulinho and Lamela all looked like really good signings, and only Chadli looked like he might be a bit of a dud. On the other hand Liverpool's team without Suarez is almost certainly better than Spurs' was without Bale before you take the new signings into account, so maybe they'll cope better.
Probably Liverpool's BEST (actual or likely) signing so far this summer.
arguments could be made for Lallana and Remy too. Markovic is very highly rated too. They're very good signings imho onion.
At the moment that 3 looks like being 3 from Coutinho, Sterling, Markovic and Lallana. Compared to Harzard-Oscar-Willian or Nasri-Silva-Navas or Ozil-Cazorla-Sanchez it looks a bit, well, fifth place. Can's a decent signing and Lovren is an upgrade, but the players signed at the other end don't look like replacing 30 goals and a dozen assists between them.
Brendan Rogers will not be liverpool manager for the start of the 2015-16 season
It's the first time in his career that he's had real expectations of what he's required to achieve. No-one expected him to get Swansea promoted or keep them up, or to seriously challenge for the totle with Liverpool so early. Now that 4th is minimum requirement it'll be interesting to see how he adjusts to the pressure.
Ergo he will be great in real life
I think it's the eyebrows.
He's scored a goal every second game since he moved to England. While playing for two teams that had shitty seasons.
All my Emirates Mates were sniffy about signing him and that seems to be the general vibe coming out of Liverpool too
the goal every second game looks less good when you point out that hes only played 40 games, but as a second-choice i think hes great for a CL team. if he plays 20-25 games this season and gets 10-15 goals then thats a great return for pool. the 8.5m fee is good value for pool and qpr, his reported wage demands are pretty big though which i'd imagine is what turned us off.
Or at least while playing wider than a traditional striker?
That seems like a pretty useful option to have in a squad's arsenal
is part of why i in theory wouldve liked him to join us. the 70-80k wage demands for an injury prone squad player are probably ott though.
who looks a cut above when he's playing for an average team but will be a squad player at best for a good team.
The general mercenary nature, the utter ineptitude that surrounds him wherever he goes, the lack of "big" experience and the general nowhere near as good as Suarez-ness. I think he's a solid signing at a time we need a bit better than solid.
that has resulted in him failing a few medicals on insurance grounds. He also earns, having first come to England to join a panic stricken QPR who'd recently handed 'Arry the reigns, an absolute packet.
Think those two things probably limit how wants to take him on and at what initial cost.
I think I can safely say neither of those two factors are influencing the thinking of the average football fan who just thinks he's a bit average.
Possibly the thinking of the average club administrator or footballing mega-nerd, but not your average blowhard
and they won't be challenging again for a long time. Gerrards slip was more enjoyable than some of the more mundane titles united won recently
no pressure, just walked the ball over the line for no obvious reason. muppet.
think the ref felt sorry for us after that, we won 2-1 with two bullshit penalties iirc, second one literally the last kick of the game. was great.
Think Arsenal beat them 2-0 on Saturday. Think that effectively means Brentford = Arsenal?
but more attacking options.
on balance, two evenly matched sides
Can you tell me about Jack Barmby and Louis Rowley?
Scored for fun, completely stalled and was let go at the end of last season.
Rowley is a defender, suffers from not really having a set position.
Worth a punt by leicester but I think Rowley will end up lower table championship and Barmby a bit higher.
since our chairman declared that we were gunning for top 5 in 3 years.
After he only managing to sign Fellaini (surely he asked Woodward for more than this?), van Gaal now seems to have reaped the benefit of the Utd board realising they have to spend big to achieve anything this year.
Bit surprised they weren't in for Lovren, though.
they appoint moyes, fergie's anointed one. utterly fail to back him in the transfer market, sack him as soon as CL football's mathematically impossible to reduce the payout, then appoint LVG and back him with huge investment.
why not either back moyes properly, or just not appoint him in the first place? it was clear the squad needed an overhaul last year, just seems really bizarre all round. don't get me wrong, moyes did a really poor job (albeit in difficult circumstances) but if they didnt trust him in the first place why not appoint somebody they did? and if they did why not just back him like they've backed van gaal?
'appointed' by his predecessor against the wishes (or at the very least, not the preferred candidate) of the Utd board, barely backed and subsequently sacked as soon as his minimum requirements for the season were no longer possible.
Agreed that he didn't exactly do a great job, but he wasn't given much of a chance, really.
Guess that shows you how much influence SAF had over the club.
even he was blind to its weakness. it took a year of horror to convince everyone who still needed convincing. i feel bad for moyes, but at the end it was clear that even with big money backing he would have been horrible. fellaini ffs.
A clear out was always likely in 2014, making room for players and wages
Woodward and Arnold gave Fergie enough rope to be kept out of all future decisions.
but their pursuits of thiago and fabregas were embarrassing. their flirtation with baines was moronic, as was the eventual price paid for fellaini. guess it goes back to the question, why appoint him in the first place? moyes clearly would've liked more than just fellaini added to the squad.
the club said virtually nothing in the press. thiago's agent is pep's brother - as soon as bayern wanted him there was 0% he'd go to Man Utd.
fair enough on Fabregas.
so far both Moyes and LVG have spent over the odds for two players no-one else was really in for.
Hopefully Negredo can rediscov-
just as soon as Everton cough up 136 mil for Rodwell.
Should make a decent profit out of it though. Should be finished in no more than a couple of days.
They said he was shit
I overheard some laughter and moved closer to their circle of wheelchairs to see what it was that had tickled them
today it's Scott Hogan off Rochdale, who is a striker. I have no idea if he's any good whatsoever?
Not entirely convinced he's ready to step up to a Championship team, but depending on the fee he may be worth the gamble.
no hoo-ha-ing over transfer targets. Just figure out what positions to fill and throw 30mil at the nearest superstar. Job done.
Everyone seems to be doing good business though. Apart from Spurs. I guess they bought about 60 players last season though.
Not going to lie, really struggling to get over that.
Speculation is that Borini does not want to go.
it's him running around his living room biting on a wedge of £50s. he's been angling for a big bucks move to easy street like this the whole time.
surely if you were brendan you'd wrap him in cotton wool, put him in a bubble and then wrap the bubble in more cotton wool.
since joining Liverpool. Ridiculous.
I keep assuming at the start of each season that Sunderland had finally been relegated, and am genuinely surprised when I see their mishmash team of top 4 rejects trudging on to the pitch on MOTD.
Why would he want to go somewhere where he would probably not be first choice? Sounds like Spurs are hedging their bets on finishing in the top 4 this season or losing Lloris next summer.
He has been utter rubbish since he left us and could barely walk around the pitch during the World Cup. I can see him being a big noise around the dressing room, barely getting a game and giving us the licence to sell Lukaku when we should be playing HIM.
"Akinfenwa weighs around 16 stone and is noted for his above average strength"
You don't say.
Tbf his scoring record over the last few years is pretty decent, he must have a bit of pace there.
Last year Everton, Southampton did admirably
Can't really decide this year. Hull maybe but they've got a lot of fixtures. QPR? Palace? Surely not West Ham...
I think Swansea could really struggle if they lose Bony could be picks for relegation.
Superb transfer business so far locking down Sendo, Coley and Kezza
the best bit's of Rios punks are how not bothered the punkees are by some of the shittest pranks of all time. And how Rio reacts to the on-going merkage.
i have no idea who ben davies is
Very good future ahead of him, safer than Danny Rose which obviously has it's plus and minuses.
Bad news for Jordan Henderson
Good news for Wilshere?
I was terrified he's stick around for the Euros.
Unless...I've been hellbanned.
you're now probably only a couple of injuries away from Phil Jagielka leading the boys out at Wembley.
Just think about that.
well at least since the last england player to reach 100 caps
there have obviously been loads
Farewell sweet prince. Or as they say in Italy; auf weidersein, sweet prince.
- United to put in synthetic pitches!
- 16 Arsenal player to potentially be alright in a few years!
- World Cup damaged amid rejoicing!
Will Özil be one?
who spent all summer being linked to clubs far bigger and more prestigious than his talents would otherwise suggest sensible has come out to make it clear that he actually turned down Inter Milan, instead choosing to 'continue growing' in the Premier League with the Hull City Stripe Cats.
Take your time. Are you sure you've had enough of a break? *feels football season's forehead* Hmm, maybe you need a couple more months off...
Really like the look of de Jong and Riviere playing together, even if the opposition were so average they let Yanga-Mbiwa score.
splonk £8m on a proven Championship striker. Planning ahead for the 2015-16 season, clever stuff.
a return of 2 goals in 15 games before getting shipped out on loan over Christmas to some team in Spain or Argentina.
Can a Brighton fan tell us all that he's amazing please.
Breaks out transfer record previously held by Ade Akinbiyi, so there's that.
At least 72% as good as Ross McCormack. At least.
So this mathematical calculation brings me some comfort
£8m though? Bloody hell!
I've seen him play a few times. Didn't think he was up to much. Like EMO but without the goals.
My mum saw him in a bakery and said he looked 'rich'
kind of a shame, i actually started to like real a bit last season, weirdly. Then they go and sign someone for double what they could've got him for a year ago and do that thing where they sell a perfectly good player to make way for him.
Not that i'm complaining that we scavenged ozil off them but they're just such a horrible club. Can't imagine what a douchebag you'd have to be to support them.
Oh this player's good who does he play for? Oh, Real. This one's good too - who does he play for? Dunno, oh just moved to Real. This one? Was Real, now Barca. Shut up, you're boring me.
Remember the World Cup? That was good.
Casillas to be third choice?
Their team is nuts.
Kroos and Modric in midfield.
Ronaldo / Bale / Rodriguez / Di Maria / Jese
As a result of Ramos or Pepe headbutting someone.
although the first two might be leaving i guess.
would love man utd to put in a bid for jese. LOVE IT.
Utterly horrible club.
BUY SOMEONE CRAP FOR ONCE
QPR linked to Danny Rose. Please no
Scolari's team clearly not considered soul-sappingly depressing enough.
like literally doesn't even seem to be mentioned
anyway i googled it
Not naive enough to let sentiment get in the way of one last payday; leak a story City are after you to the tabloids, should mean another twenty grand a week so!
Would be a bit disappointed if we sold Nastasic to another Premier League side. £16m seems a bit low to me aswell. Not particularly sure why they're looking to replace Koscielny, who I thought had a perfectly fine season last year.
Moscow-based campaigner and activist Nikolay Levshits is concerned:
"I support the World Cup in Russia but not at the cost of withdrawing money from schools, hospitals or the pockets of pensioners."
Nikolay Levshits. Levshits.
than schools, hospital or pensioners' pockets.
is he even that good?
It's very safe to assume the latter. Apparently that would mean he'd been unavailable for 15 of 25 months since signing for West Ham, and probably only half-fit for another 8 or so of the remainder.
Newcastle are very welcome to him. Have you got any Ameobis left we can swap him for?
It's a bit special: https://twitter.com/AndyTownsend_AV/status/491594049993060352
not going to link to DM but...
there is a story on there about Messi asking about possibly moving to Arsenal before he signed his last contract at Barca.
#FLATTERED #GUNNERSAURUSMESS #THANKSBUTNOTHANKS
i'll be honest, it's weird. Gonna assume he forgot that he only dreamt it.
i know he hasn't reached his potential but wow. i'll give him til Jan before he wants out.
Currently losing 2-0 to the might of the Wellington Phoenix.
Noble having a disaster. Phoenix passin' and movin' like they've got the Liverpool groove.
just ignore it, guys. It'll disappear once Lucien buys something.
It's not gone down too well with O's fans:
Enjoy cheering on the Hammers dressed as a pirate.
Liverpool are doing the same thing this season - everyone's going to turn up in Suarez t-shirts.
Phoenix win 2-1. Outstanding result, even if it is only a friendly.
[Southampton suck. Buy stuff, Lucien. Buy stuff]
Should be a great day, two games in a row of prem football teams, what more could you ask for. Would be incredible if Phoenix managed to win the tournament.
That was good.
I still haven't filled in the scores for the last 3 games, due to the disappearance of my special World Cup Wall Chart pen.
upon finding that my guardian not-even-a-wallchart wallchart didn't include the 3rd place playoff. Pricks.
The wall chart talk wasn't all jokes?
it's not the same anymore :(
to Darren Peacock.
when Caulker goes up for corners/free-kicks/everything and Rio has to watch for him though.
So they'll have Rio and THE CHIEF to contend with. Man is a brick wall
But you and I both know it will be the pub landlord.
Not sure we have a right wing back.
He's fucking brilliant you momos
gonna win the league.
this morning about Vorm leaving. Not sure why he'd want to go given he's had an excellent couple of seasons there and is probably going to be sat on the bench most of next season.
Ben Davies is a decent signing for Spurs, mind. He's pretty good.
Overloaded at Sigurdsson's position, so someone has to go to raise money, and it probably helped the negotiations with Swansea for buying Davies and Vorm. The latter is probably insurance in case of losing Lloris next summer. The surprise is more that Vorm is on board with it.
so vorm thought sod it, i'll take the money and a season on the bench if i'm gonna be sitting around here anyway.
from the ever reliable goal.com
Maybe Swansea were swayed by Vorm's injuries during the last couple of seasons and thought they should cash in now. I would still think that Vorm could have found a better opportunity for himself to play elsewhere.
and he's probs better than Holtby tbh
Ryan Bertrand to Liverpool. Oh, and Borini got injured in a friendly. Happy days indeed.
solid advice tbf
(cool goal from a cool guy though)
£30m for an unproven centre-half who wanted to go elsewhere. Great. Got a feeling he'll prove an absolute turkey.
Could be the first real dud of Txiki era. He wasn't even playing for Porto by the end of last season.
Watched Porto v Napoli in Europa League last year.
Fernando was class - Mangala looks proper gangly, but there's some strength there. Does look like it could all go wrong for him though, as he barely looks like he has the ball under control at any time.
30 million for him is nuts though - doesn't even start for France. Sakho (pure nutter) is ahead of him.
for me to put out the call to an Ameobi
They could do some of the leafleting around Leyton and Leytonstone perhaps?
Sammy has better hair.
Their sister used to run a hair shop in Newcastle. I doubt she'd be much good at CF.
Loved the young lad coming on at the end and absolutely clattering some Italian bloke within a couple of minutes. Probably would have walked in the Prem. Cracking stuff.
Then the interviews with players. In all the WORLD CUP excitement I'd forgotten just how tediously fucking dull English players are
which quite possibly only mean VIDAL OFF when taken out of context. the way it sounds from the entirety of the quotes is that he isn't certain to go anywhere, United included, just yet.
not that he's not going at all, ever.
"I've not spoken to Allegri yet, or my team-mates, but I'm not going to Manchester."
when you remove the context of me wanting him to sign for United, and moreover, not wanting him not to sign for United, I can imagine that sounding pretty negative.
y'know, because they know both ArturON and his agent, and United, still want the deal.
actually thinking United are the party not wanting the deal. LVG praising Strooty again.
But at football last night one of our lads tore his cruciate ligaments, knee popped out and everything. Was really horrible. He was telling me before we kicked off how it was his first 11s game in like four years :(
Can people ever really recover from this (with or without surgery)?
I tore my ACL in 2006, mainly caused by having a sizeable lump of cartilage floating around my knee from a previous injury, and it getting caught somewhere causing my knee to twist to an extremely disconcerting angle. I had the operation later that year, and so far I'm OK (cue my knee collapsing tomorrow at 11-a-side...)
I took ages to come back from it though, partly due to the timing of the operation and start of the season, but mostly because I was really worried about messing it up by coming back too soon. Chose to only play 5 a side for a couple of years cos the pitches are better and fewer sliding/dodgy tackles.
Still can be a bit sore now after an 11s match on grass, plus I've lost a lot of the pace I had before the injury. I was 18 when it happened though, so that might just be as a result of me getting older.
So, it can be done - but I think a lot depends on patience and/or luck. Hope your mate can make a full recovery soon.
Not surprised that the fear element comes into the recovery period as well, though it's always the most innocuous challenges (or catching studs in turf etc) that seem to cause these things.
He's a hard-working guy, I'm sure he'll be grand.
Seems such a rubbish injury.
they lose that yard of pace and struggle to be able to take players on.
He's too good for the Championship surely
He was a complete beast, sort of Yaya-esque in terms of his nonchalant dictating of the midfield. But he must be shit, because if he'd played like that every week then Fulham would have been top half.
(He is too good for the Championship though)
All I see is Samaras.
hope some English club sign him anyway though
Sun 20th July: George Thorne signs for Derby for £2M
Thu 24th July: George Thorne injured in pre-season friendly
Fri 25th July: George Thorne confirm as having ruptured anterior cruciate ligaments - out for 9 months
who was a former Chelsea youth & Cheltenham Town player...just found out he fell off a balcony on holiday and died. Absolutely awful. He had a left foot like a cannon.
at least three times isn't it. Weird.
(Although I guess you could say paying nothing for Francois was still too much). Ilori was £7m but he's still only 21, Sakho about twice that but was starting to look quality towards the end of last year. Can't see Lovren ever being worth £20m, but just look at his lovely handsome face.
sakho was more like £18m wasnt he?
idk maybe you'll have an amazing defence next season, i guess. Money aside Lovren's probably a good signing.
saints are LITERALLY gonna have no players left by the start of the season. I feel really sorry for them.
are you available on the 17th of August? We might need you in the starting eleven to be honest.
We'd put a youth team-er in there, but you know, Liverpool would probably get ideas.
God forbid our incompetent board had the foresight to say we'll sell him to you for 16million and the loan of 2 good prospects for the season (e.g. Zelalem). We need bodies...any bodies... right now!
Premier League giantslayers Wellington Phoenix v Newcastle United
and West Ham v Sydney FC.
It'll be shit, won't it?
disappointed phoenix didn't do more do give newcastle a run for their money though. 1 - 0 isn't terrible though, and phoenix looked like a threatening team for a majority of it
West Ham were terrible, though their fans were good (especially in the second game when they just chanted and danced in their own world). Happy with the Phoenix other than the finishing, albeit it was hardly Newcastle's best team.
Jenkinson will be our back-up right back still I think. He looked impressive every time I watched him last season. Seems like a good deal considering he is young, english and can play 2 positions. I doubt it's £16m upfront anyway, there will be a lot of bonuses factored in to it depending on how he progresses.
Not sure I'd pay 16 million for him, but it might prove to be a Rio Ferdinand type buy in the end.
i find this/the mooted manquillo deal slightly strange but fair enough. it makes sense in some way to find an immediate (debuchy) as well as a long term sagna replacement. gives chambers a chance to bed in while debuchy plays and gradually replace him over the next few seasons.
the fact that we're willing to spend this much on a right back we dont need right now to me signals that there's gonna be a fair bit more spending this summer. i really really want a midfielder brought in to start alongside ramsey, everyone's just so fucking expensive in this market though.
to look for more British young signings, and that the board are less impressed by the prospect of huge outlays on Khedira and Schniederlin.
But that could be bollox. Wenger's usually been allowed to his own wacky designs in the transfer market.
Chambers has a lot of potential. We were all surprised by how solid and consistent he was when he got his chance. He needs to work on the attacking side of his game (or at leaast learn the confidence to make more use of his attacking talents rather than playing it safe)- we created very little down our right side all season. But he kept Clyne out when Clyne came back from injury and by the season end I think many of us considered he may be the better player potentially in the long run.
As I said above, he has zero first team experience as a centre-back. Zero. I worry about Arsenal as a place to learn it when Arsene likes to play that high line against big clubs. That's no place to learn centre-back art.
Chambers is different from Shaw, or at least what we've seen of him. Less desire to get forward, more solid. Less errors compared to Shaw's first season. Shaw could develop into a very good wing-back, but has deficiencies in his game that need to be sorted. Chambers appears to have less flaws, but the all-roundedness of his defensive play means it's really hard to tell how far he'll go in the long run.
as if wenger's the kind of manager who wants to spunk 20m+ and 8-9m a year on khedira with only one year left on his contract.
cheers for the comments, good to hear from a saints fan. sounds like we'll definitely need another centreback option in any case. id imagine jenkinson will go on loan (possibly to you or newcastle).
when they field maybe 5 players alongside 6 wheelbarrows of cash.
For some strange reason the game's being held in Liverpool. Also apparently no one can decide which team is which.
Chambers started out as a right-winger in the youth team and only got converted to full-back a couple of years ago.
He's been talked of as being shiftable to centre-back because he's mobile but solid. I think it's very stupid on his part and Arsenal's if that experiment is undertaken at Arsenal. They should buy him and loan him back to Saints for a year on the condition he is usually played as a centre-back. At Arsenal, the competition, pressure and scrutiny (and high line) will be too much for someone who has played 1 professional season.
it's possible he might have had an experimental match or two there for the U-21's (I know he was occasionally used at left-back and left-winger to broaden his attributes).
So that's upwards of 20m for two bang average rbs? Should probably have just offered Sagna a 3 year deal!
christ.. it just sounds wrong... wonder what your shirts will look like with KUWAIT written on them..?
kuwait forest.. jesus. feel bad for you man. hope it doesnt last too long
now this I'm ok with, but if the new ownership decided to go for the "azerbaijan land of fire stadium" I'm not sure if I could get down with that.
stadiums with naming rights sound as tacky as hell.
and if theres a product or brand or whatever then fair enough.. kind of.. I wonder if more people have gone to azerbaijan since they sponsored athletico madrid..?
weird when its not a brand new stadium though.. most people will still call it the city ground.. and even if it is a brand new stadium.. like boltons..is that still the reebok? always will be in my mind.. like huddersfield is the mcalpine..
Not the worst renaming job ever, by still pretty stupid.
lots of clubs have City in them so you lose your uniqueness... but the Kuwait City Ground...
Hey, look how Hull are doing in the transfer market this summer... there may be a bright side to losing your soul.
Also, rumours are it's part of a £500,000,000 deal. I'd do a lot for that money
I HATE you. I'm done with you. I shall win the Champions League on FM2014 with my young Saints stars instead of reading about you or watching you. Every time I turn on the telly for the next 10 years it will be like watching one of my ex-girlfriends getting banged by a dick-nosed brainless model for H&M.
Chambers going is just a complete headfuck. An unnecessary and unexpected twist of the knife.
Lallana and Lovren are cunts. Can't wait to hear 30,000 booing your every move at St.Mary's. Wishing you a cruciate.
Our board are twats. The day Nic went was the day it all slipped away.
In case anybody else in the lower reaches of English football hasn't noticed, the glass ceiling is cemented in place and supported by reinforced concrete pillars. And the FFP rules dictate that clubs can spend as much money depriving of you the next big thing exactly 5 minutes after you have first learnt of his existence because he's young and HOMEGROWN.
Looking forward to a relegation scrap involving the owner being insulted continually by our fans, and feeling she can't bring her son any more, before putting us up for sale. But hey... if we do make some good buys we might finish 8th again in a few years before the next crop is harvested.
See you all in 2 or 3 transfer windows time when the same post can be placed after the sale of Matt Targett, Harrison Reed, Sam Gallagher and James Ward-Prowse. At which time the ex-Saints contingent of the England squad will be bigger than number of United or Liverpool players in the squad.
Time for some Joy Division.
Clubs paid at least a few million more than they should have done for some of your players, so you're not allowed to complain.
in the blink of an eye on what agents and clubs will want from us when we try to sign anyone now.
We have more goalkeepers in our first team squad right now than full-backs or strikers.
I expect he'll be sold- there's only two years on his deal now, so a loan would be kinda pointless.
But yeah, pretty dubious about what the plan is. If we get to September and our striking options are Costa, Torres and Drogba, we'll arguably have got worse in the main area we fell short last season.
than Eto'o, Torres and Ba?
Don't think I agree with that.
for when Mourinho decides to revert to a false 9 to win some invented, 3 year-old argument with Guardiola.
a better option than a prime Demba Ba or 3-4 year younger Eto'o? I don't think so. I'm not even sure a 36 year old Drogba, as much as I adore the ground he works on, is a better option than Fernando bloody Torres.
Would a trio of Costa, Drogba and Torres come close to, say, City's options up front? Not imo.
but it's far better than what we had last year. Demba Ba may have been in his prime but he could barely move his legs, and Costa is a better player than all 3 of last year's strikers put together.
I do hope we keep Lukaku though, if only so Drogba can teach him that he can't just expect to start at a club fighting for the title. Drogba saw off Crespo, Shevchenko, Torres, Anelka, Ba (and the mighty Mateja Kezman). Imagine if he'd just pissed off to Everton when he thought he might not be first choice?
we have the most fearsome strikeforce in Europe.
I mean just look at him. Grrrrrr
With Lukaku that looks a pretty good striking lineup. Not necessarily prolific but if Costa/Lukaku wasn't working bringing Drogba on would scare the majority of premier league defences.
Without Lukaku it looks pretty old and way too Torresy
or even Costa/Someone new/Drogba, then I'm a happy bunny. If it's a bloke who'll get sent off every other game, a 36 year old on his final contract and Old Yeller, then ... Meh.
last season, as "a bloke who'll get sent off every other game"
You're finished, mate
Strong rumours on twitter that this is happening. Apparently the owner's son all but confirmed it. Cripes. Reckon we've just pulled up a chair at the oil ballers table?
His knees are a bit fucked or something, aren't they? I remember there being a bit of doubt when he nearly signed for Newcastle.
It is not clear what the issue is with this medical.
Found that during his medical with Marseille in 2010.
Think he's previously failed 4 medicals.
Happy that he's staying at QPR (hope he's staying). He's quality.
Just wanted to acknowledge Torres doing his level best in the pre-season friendlies
Anyone know anything about Joe Riley? We've just signed him on loan for 6 months.
Every time I (foolishly) look at the Guardian footy page there'll be some story about how he's LAYING DOWN THE LAW or MAKING SO-AND-SO WORK HARD.
out of a couple of quotes/wikipedia research and just fucking hammer it home over and over again even though it makes no real sense, like:
LVG: Hard man, doesn't take any shit
Moyes: Competition winner, incapable and terrified
Jose: Charmer (how wrong this has proved the second time round at Chelsea)
It's all bollocks, but they need to fill space somehow. Also getting unreasonably irked by the reporting of pre-season friendly results as if they mean anything. 'Van Gaal's unbeaten run continues' etc etc.
I vaguely (maybe incorrectly) remember him being an alright commentator for a short period of time.
His weeklong confusion over goalline technology during and after the France vs Honduras match was ridiculous.
he used to go nuts. He's seemed to try to go demure since going on the beeb and it just doesn't suit him
Gianfranco Zola scored against some Swiss team (St Gallen, maybe?) and Pearce unleashed "ZOLA THE GOAL-A".
He's not trying to make friends or play the media game.
The players do look shit scared of him tbf and he's been slagging the club off already. It's either gonna be brilliant or he will be sacked pretty sharpish.
If the suits don't get the players he wants in he's not gonna be political about it he's gonna start kicking and screaming
Why Van Gaals Ears steaming is good news for the Premier League- Daniel Taylor
From his first training session where the Iron Tulip set out his wit and gumption philosophy to try and stop the Manchester United Empire crumbling steam has literally been seen coming from his ears.
Every single article for about three months now has been written by Jamie Jackson (dedicated van Gaal correspondent), Daniel Taylor (bad-at-writing-about-football correspondent) or Press Association.
Nice sentence from the latter the other day:
"West Ham looked short of match fitness and were left to rue becoming the first English side to lose in New Zealand since Scottish team Hearts did in 1976."
only to still get it wrong.
"Stevan Jovetic gaved the Premier League champions the lead after 12 minutes with a low shot that crept in at the near post and three minutes later Gaël Clichy picked out Scott Sinclair in the box and he scored the second from close range."
United fans sung it for roughly 85 minutes when they turned up at Loftus Road a couple of seasons back.
Yeah, Carrick did pull the strings, but we were fucking dogshit and had given up long ago.
I just got progressively fucked off - vaguely remember Redknapp banging on about how we wouldn't finish bottom at the end of the season as well. Tosser.
It's a great little ditty no mater how inaccurate
it quickly gets tedious.
I realise this is completely irrational, mind.
We were absolute fucking shite, Utd coasted to victory without even looking at the gearstick, let alone getting out of neutral and there was this fucking drone like a funeral parade from the away end the whole fucking game
"Well, Ted, as I said last time, it won't happen again".
Someone do something, please. The BBC football page is an embarrassment, the top headline atm is Man Utd's second choice right-back picking up a thigh strain ffs.
We have been after him for a while, we also trying to get Jose Fonte back too. I'd be happy with both.
Just shows you, pick any player from Southampton and any random club in England and it's probably happening
what's the point?
he must be good, then.
Sanchez is nowhere near as good as Jenkinson
watch this 5 minute video that someone has bothered to edit and upload to youtube showing Carl 'Jenks/Jenko' Jenkinson being mildly competent in a game of association football.
Right now Wenger is berating his staff "He's French AND injury prone? You all should be ashamed of yourselves"
We are fucked.
He'll score 18+ goals this season right?
The good news is that my strikeforce at kick-off last season was Anelka, Van Wolswinkel and Benteke and so we're going to rake in the points with this selection.
I basically use ff to troll myself.
That's my #prediction
Pretty harsh, he wasn't *that* bad. He would have fitted right in with the Worst Brazil World Cup Squad in History I reckon. Great win, gays.
Think he was left back last time Dunga inflicted his hatred of football on the world.
Pretty sad story really, classless stuff from Flamengo.
Good old Brazil, the home of football, eh?
I hope Arsenal don't get infected with stupid Soton Hair now. Bad enough since Ramsey started copying Giroud's idiot quiff.
Looking forward to our squad missing months at a time with colds and coughs after their first training sessions that weren't conducted inside a massive plastic bubble.
It's nice to see Samuel Eto'o has finally made himself at home at Chelsea:
I didn't know Carlos Puyol was going out with Iggy Pop
"He's never had a problem with his fitness - you couldn't meet a fitter lad."
Sounds like Liverpool really did dodge a bullet here.
It's because he has a hole in his heart apparently.
Same condition that Mohamed Diame has.
Something to do with insurance for players. QPR obviously don't have this premium insurance.
We signed Charlie Austin after he failed a medical at Hull.
Taking multi million pound risks on players with long term health risks is rather biting the hand that feeds
the club has basically always said that we were working on a restricted budget that would be significantly lifted once new sponsorship deals came in this year, yet those fans would always point towards the funds we had available (rather than our revenue) and insist that wenger just 'hates spending money' because he's 'stubborn' and 'vain' and 'doesnt actually want to win anything, just play in the champions league'.
Then we go and buy four very decent players before august (i'm giving debuchy the benefit of the doubt) right after people complain about wenger 'swanning about' in brazil while our rivals strengthen :'''')
Yeah i dunno, its just that as an arsenal fan its really, really good to see that narrative fuck off forever. Also, I think we're one signing away from being genuine contenders, in the next season or two. I.e. not underdogs, but having as good a chance as anyone of winning all the best stuff. We've apparently bid for Carvalho and are waiting for sporting to relent to our lowball bid, so i'd be pretty ecstatic if that happens given what's been written about him over the past year...
ALSO, i reckon the last three years of his career will see wenger have his pre-emirates reputation being restored, as the enormity of his post-emirates poverty heroics are re-evaluated by the football mainstream, and he wins lots of stuff 2014-17 with a really good attacking team (yep).
Anyway yeah this post is too long, but it actually feels good supporting arsenal in a transfer window, for the first time since i bothered taking any notice. Chambers is a very surprising signing, but a really good one by all accounts.
that Ramsey's goal tally could make double figures.
obviously having so many new signings will probably mean we don't play to our potential, but i reckon 15/16 once they've settled we should be pretty much up there, and going far in the champions league.
three of those being being first XI, and two of them in quite important positions in terms of helping/hindering the fluidity of a team's play.
i dunno it's not so bad but it's worth bearing in mind before you join in with the wengerout hashtagging after we lose away at chelsea (yes you, meths)
don't reckon a city splurge is gonna happen this season. FFP seems to have actually done stuff, weirdly.
Arsenal one of the teams benefiting most.
This is a response that i didn't expect
seriously how the hell did you guys cope?
If I can't put Samaras in my ff squad it is a shallow greyscale cacophony of empty dreams
I returned to find the final entry of my wallchart had been filled in by someone. Ragin'
Schneiderlin and Jay Rodriguez are going to Tottenham.
Can we make sure someone’s with the DiS Saints fan when he hears the news? I’m worried for him.
In all seriousness, I genuinely feel sorry for Southampton.
I knew they'd get hit this summer but nowhere near as bad as this. They don't need to sell that bad, surely? What are they playing at?
bit of good old fashioned asset stripping before she finally sells. Guess I feel a bit sorry for them, she is fucking minted and could have tried to find a buyer pre-sell off, but then it is the scummers so.......
Personally I can't wait to get back to St Mary's. Support the club through thick and thin.
But there is clearly something happening behind the scenes. Makes a mockery of those intending to aim abuse at Lallana when we play Liverpool. He knew it, Pochettino knew it, and it looks like most of the Saints players knew it.
They'll be arranging a 5-aside friendly with Blackpool at this rate.
Get back in your box you south cost no marks
DiS outing to the pub to w...oh never mind, I'll just wait for the 'football season' to start
Still no goalkeeper...
Last time Man Utd didn't win the league the season after a World Cup?
Put the house on...something.
That's Arsenal finishing 13th this season then
it's leading to photos like this, so i'm all for it btw
I can't think of a good one.
But can't see West Ham signing him either.
He's French and little, what is Arsene Wenger playing at?
Would love to see him playing for West Ham, but if somehow that happened it would be a signing made by the owners and Allardyce would probably keep him on the bench all season as a matter of principle.
relegation scrap again for us then
stop it douglas.
this one's got too big and is feeding Royter's ego
someone less popular than Royter?
it was called football spin off thread, but for some reason it didn't catch on
Turns out my playful dig was an unprovoked attack on Jordan. I'm worse than Royter.
I'm only a part timer on here, so don't think many know me
i suppose he's nearly 30 but if during the world cup you'd told me he'd be going to west ham for about £6m, i'd be very confused
would've thought even liverpool or spurs. newcastle at the very least
And any of those clubs mentioned pay three times what we do in wages AND live in big cosmopolitan cities.
which is why he was only initially linked to Russian clubs.
Makes me feel like a true irrational GOONER.
Expect a couple of pro-Arsenal ads to appear before the start of the season. http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/20140728/arsenal-and-bt-sport-extend-partnership
All adding to the WARCHEST!
is Michael Owen's limp, lifeless body hanging from a tree.
old farm is expensive for what is effectively a doin' from ohgood's chip firm. Did the Championship become oil-ball while we were away too?
