when was the last time you played bowls?
we use to break into the bowls area when no one was about. It was good fun.
Definitely the best retirement sport going.
I quite fancy having a go actually.
my only previous experience is pissing on the greens when I was a teenager.
...some wags sowed cress seed all over it one Spring.
I invited everyone up to Brockwell Park (Brixton), last time someone mentioned this - but nae cunt replied.
But the invitation still stands.
Here's a montage I made (no thanks to DarwinDude):
do you typically have to be a member? or can you just pay for a one off go?
no, anyone can just turn up.
Thursday is "league night", and but we are open every Sunday from 2:00 but anyone is welcome any day.
Cost - donations only
cheapening the game
i'm a surprisingly good bowls player
that doesn't actually surprise me, LP
...but am a big fan of pétanque.
The article touches on it, but the main reason that folk are members or bowls clubs in Australia is the drink prices - especially these days, they are a fraction of the price of a beer down the pub. I was a member of my local bowls club when I lived in Sydney despite never once setting foot outside of the bar. Same as being a member of the local RSL (Retired Servicemen's League - like being a member of the British Legion).
The film in that article, Crackerjack, is worth checking out. 'We don't serve weapons of mass destruction' - arf. There was a Paul Kaye film out about lawn bowling around the same time, Blackjack. That wasn't so good.
"...but am a big fan of pétanque"
further proof that you can indy-up absolutely anything on this site
...and also no specific area on which to play tbf.
so it's more punk
but it clashed with pub quiz night or something and I didn't go to my open evening.
like everyone, bowls is associated with old people in white outfits, or that weird indoor version you see on BBC2 when there no other sport on. Reclaiming it for the youth, have a couple of beers and throw a few bowls sounds great. It will undoubtedly attract some complete pricks of course, and the oldies won't like it.
