World Cup Day 31: THE BIG ONE

umlaut_ampersand [Edit] [Delete] 44 replies 15:18, 12 July '14

So, after weeks of excitement, goals, skills, thrills, bites and universal condemnation of Mesut Özil, the moment we’ve all been waiting for has finally arrived – the third-place play-off!!!

Will it be people’s champion and avant-garde heat-mapper Fred or panto baddie and world’s sprightliest pensioner Arjen Robben who gets to lift the coveted bronze medal? Will there be Dutch genius, a capella boos and Brazilian tears or prayers of thanks, a fitting memorial for the departed Neymar and Brazilian tears?

Only really posting because I wanted to draw attention to this – looks like Roncrete Vlaar was only a few millimetres away from scoring his penalty after all...
http://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/jul/10/ron-vlaar-penalty-world-cup-semi-final-holland-argentina

Now that really would have been WORLD CUP!

  • Great article

Did Vlaar's penalty cross the line?!?

    ...

    No.

    • It's heartening to see the Guardian catching up with the latest journalistic trends though:

      • I quite like how they've build the article around two youtube videos

both of which have been copyright banned.

  • Assume Thiago Silva will hold up Fred's shirt before kickoff

    to prove he's dead.

  • Blatantly stolen from tom_from_sparks

but this news report about North Korea's journey through to the semi-finals is well worth a moment of your time. Big fan of how popular Kim Jong Un is with the Brazilian crowds in the fan parks.

You can get an translation if you turn on captions and switch Korean to English.

  • score prediction

I'm going to stick my neck out and say that Netherlands will win 5-1. what do you guys think?

    fluffyduck | 12 Jul '14, 19:45 | X
    • 2-1 to Brazil

      TheWza @fluffyduck | 12 Jul '14, 20:08 | X
      • and /that/ is why i'm not a regular betting man.

        TheWza @TheWza | 12 Jul '14, 21:20 | X
    • 2-2 Normal time

Then 4-2 aet to Netherlands. I've #kingtipper'd Van Persie to help himself to 2 goals. So expect him to endure a frustrating match :(

Really irks me when that happens, 'cos it's basically a ref inventing rules to avoid doing anything scary. There's no plausible way to read the rules and give a yellow there.

  • Clark Carlisle is a shitcunt

    Royter-Hatfood | 12 Jul '14, 21:04 | X
    • Saying Brazil have suffered

Because they don't have a player who scores six or seven goals a tournament, of whom there have been about 12 in the entire history of the world cup.

Fuck off back to dictionary corner, Clarke.

      Steved @Royter-Hatfood | 12 Jul '14, 21:19 | X
  • Would really like it if they changed the rule to that

for denying goal scoring opportunity outside the box

  • Q. How to make Ian Wright seem like even more of a petulant child?

    A. Make him wear pyjamas.

    Steved | 12 Jul '14, 21:55 | X
  • Jo or Fred?

Going with Fred. Better the dingus you don't know.

    Parsefone | 12 Jul '14, 21:57 | X
  • ian wright is so shit.

imagine being stuck in a room with him and alan shearer. shearer would bore you to the edge of sleep, and then wright would be all up in your face and wake you up every time. you would slowly go mad.

    gaborszabo | 12 Jul '14, 22:00 | X
  • One of the things I've really enjoyed about this world cup

Is the continued use of "open his legs" as a synonym for running fast. "Here's a chance for Robben to open his legs..."

    Steved | 12 Jul '14, 22:08 | X
  • this is quite interesting

    https://twitter.com/alex_eurosport/status/488067014364524544

would probably rather have that +neymar, tiago silva and oscar i guess than what they actually have

    still_here | 12 Jul '14, 22:25 | X
    • Isn't Gomes a Watford player now?

Not sure there was a lot they could have done about Diego Costa either, but surely Pato, Fabiano or Leandro Damiao (who I've never seen play by the way) would have been better than the heat map brigade.

      Steved @still_here | 12 Jul '14, 22:31 | X

    • have gone from hating the 3rd-place match

to thinking that both teams who end up in it, probably deserve such a disgrace of a match

      Loui_Tacceh @Royter-Hatfood | 12 Jul '14, 22:28 | X
  • i think clarke carlisle wants to marry van gaal

    not sure though

    still_here | 12 Jul '14, 22:53 | X
  • The prospect

of a Chelsea-esque United getting their piles licked by commentators for bringing on Lindegaard in the 92nd minute: Not appealing.
