what's going on there?
why do irish people love garth brooks? don't get it
Like, I don't know whether it is the major story or not, but my twitter news feed is spitting out updates on this on a regular basis as if it's something important.
maybe, dunno, something i saw on irish news once.
which is whatever we want it to be
The only two people I met who bought tickets I would categorically 'not go for a pint with' so I think it's actually just us laughing at them. For weeks. #goireland
i find it fascinating on a bants level. irish people aren't really that big on country music but for some reason garth brooks had a big cultural moment here back in the 90s. similar thing with david gray.
to the sounds of Big Tom or Philomena Begley, that sh*t be big down the sticks
for those of us who dgaf about news that doesn't affect london and just see it mentioned on twitter
Orchestrated a 'fake' campaign to protest the staging of the concerts.
have an agreement with Croke Park/GAA to allow only 3 non-sporting events per year. One Direction did 3 gigs in May, so that was the quota filled. Then Garth Brooks got booked in to play Croke Park and they kept selling out so fast that there ended being 5 shows booked, despite the promoter not having been granted a licence by the council yet.
Residents staged some resistance and it was announced that only 3 of the gigs could go ahead and the 4th and 5th would be cancelled. Then Garth Brooks decided to be a massive baby and say he would only do all 5 or none at all, presumably expecting everyone to give in to his demands and allow all 5. But they didn't so he's had to stick to his word and cancel all 5. Now all of his fans are unhappy but they seem to be blaming the council etc. rather than blaming Brooks himself for being such a baby (though the promoter obviously deserves a lot of flack for agreeing to put on some gigs that flew in the face of an existing agreement).
That's my understanding of it. Surprised by how many people I know had tickets for it, I thought it was only me that was subjected to Brooks' music throughout my childhood by my dad.
The amount of money he passed up in just doing 3 is incredible. If you search 'Garth cancellation' there's a post by the Irish Post for April Fools where it says Garth cancelled because he was double booked for going paintballing:D
They should all quit their jobs as journos and go into fortune telling.
“He was running around like a flaming eejit. I had no choice but to deck him. He could have injured someone else” said Mr. Mackey, who was on his way to work at the time. “I fucking hate that song too, so I hit him pretty hard in fairness. I hope he’s alright.”
