I think we'll lose by about 200 runs.
Stokes in for Jordan?
Cook to make more than 20?
Lose by 250 runs.
B Kumar MOTM.
Cook will fail in first innings then scrappy 50 in second
So pumped to have a five game series to take us through to Football even though we'll probs get smashed.
I'd imagine Stokes starts although seems a bit harsh on Jordan.
Cook needs to get properly dower and just leave anything every single decent delivery and try and accumulate his way out of this rut.
A dour Gower?
India struggle over here, no pressure of putting them in or having to bat first. Turn them over reasonably cheaply and if he gets into the 20's the pressures off a bit.
that if your surname is Binny/Binney you have to have a really dorky English name?
He'll rock up with some really defensive field settings and buy himself some time.
Have you seen India's bowling attack and the weather forecast?
the worse we are sometimes. Fair point about the weather, though.
test series do not start on Wednesdays.
...as for the third test >:|
Have I missed much

Guys, there's a thread

Pretty immature to be posting in here tbf tbh
The opposite is true.
All discussion of this match must be in this thread, but we can discuss other things in here. I'm not a dictator ffs.
not for me, Blowers
Don't care what thread this appears in but some people do and so here it is.
This way everyone knows what's going on.
This is all a consequence of people pissing about this afternoon and using the wrong threads. It's no wonder this thread has struggled to get off the ground over the course of this test if newcomers get the impression none of us takes this seriously. It's a pity, but whatever. You lot do what you like. Just don't expect me to make a thread for the second test. Have fun without one.
Ali can't be used as the main spinner unfortunately, going to have to bite the bullet and bring Monty back or give Kerrigan another go. Also Notts groundsman should be hauled over the fucking coals for this pitch.
If he comes back to the test side, I'm emigrating.
Bad Boy of Spin. Who are the legit other options as I don't watch county cricket?
Cosker's bowling well, as is Riley.
All the above bowlers are in D2
I WILL concede, though, that Ali has now got to score quite a few runs to retain his place
you absolute crust. No way he's getting dropped any time soon.
like leaving a perfectly-pitched legbreak on length
I've already scored the equivalent of a triple-century today, so I can still walk off with my bat held high.
in my defence, you *are* that stupid.
*gently plays quicker one back up the pitch*
It just won't work.
Heat of the day, glitchy wicket, Pegfeet tweaking it both ways. Sport at its finest
He's been dropped for non-cricketing reasons. Again.

77 partnership now
a new record for an Indian 10th wicket against England

i wouldn't like to guess

Again is he getting it together in county cricket?
This lack of a decent spinner is a killer. It's all well and good for Swann to have retired and make his money sitting in the commentary box, but he had a few years left in him yet and there was no one to replace him (not that it is his responsibility I guess).
That as soon as their last wicket put on over 100 that Cook had precisely zero chance of reaching ten. None at all.
I'm seriously thinking of jumping on the Cook out bandwagon, if there's any room. Can't believe I'm saying it but there it is.
any idea the last time we had a sporty pitch in a home test?
och aye the noo!
Snoozefest of the century thus far.
around Robson, Ballance and Ali. This is exactly what we've been missing since Trott lost form. It's just what we need.
We need accumulators - between Bell, Cook and Prior we have enough strokemakers as it is. The only real problem we have is a lack of spin (and therefore variety). It's amazing how much of a team's game can hinge on one or two individuals. How would you summarise teams in trouble:
1. A team with no accumulators
2. A team with no quality spinner
3. A team without a single quality seamer
4. A team with a wicket keeper who can't keep for toffee
Why else would he be with the squad right now? Cook clearly doesn't fancy Mo's bowling and the Indians clearly fancy it rather a lot.
Clearly we have to trial all the front-runners and see who rises to the challenge. I know he had a dog of a debut against the Australians, but it's time to give him another try.
Apparently they've had him in and around the squad and netting with the players this summer wherever possible, but without the pressure of having been named in the squad. Think that's actually quite impressive man-management.
Survive out the morning get your eye in then try and plunder runs in the afternoon session. Ballance is picking off the bad balls and is still learning to play number 3 anyway so got no problem with him spending this series accumulating rather than smacking people around.
Mo's century against Sri Lanka was genuinely one of the best I've ever seen an English player get in terms of concentration and judgement.
However there is NOTHING in the pitch at all so effectively it's just a bit like watching a net session, especially with Binny providing his throwdowns. This game is practically a nailed on draw already (unless England have a major collapse soon) and it's not even lunch on Day 3 yet. The last day of the Headingley test was incredible viewing because there was actually a lot at stake. This test has just been ruined already by whoever prepared this shambles of a playing surface (and both captains who asked for the heavy roller whenever the opportunity was given).
Also, I say snoozefest, but I've only missed about 10 overs of the test match thus far so I obviously can't be hating it that much.
They're hardly going to choose an option that makes batting harder if they're given any choice in the matter pre-innings.
but Robson and Ballance seem to me to be the sort of players whom a top bowling attack could tie down and work over. This might be unfair, though, so we'll just have to wait and see
Ali is a player who can accumulate solidly AND blaze around the ground with outrageous talent, so obviously I prefer him and would rather watch cricket played by his kind
I can verify that he can be a lot more entertaining than he has been in these tests for England thus far (in much the same way as Trott could be when he chose to be) but he's obviously been designated something of an anchor role in the team so is trying to fulfil that as far as possible.
I do share your suspicions re top bowling attacks however.
Root: Cook 2.0 Untouchable
Ballance: plodding Trott 2.0 ECB wet dream untouchable.
Stokes: Genuine all-rounder probably untouchable.
he'd better become a fearsome striker of the quick stuff & a genuine Test bowler to compensate
Reckon that buys him a lot of patience especially if they call up a spinner.
I thought his captaincy was a lot better over the last 2 days. Bowlers and pitch badly let him down for that 10th wicket stand.
Although it was difficult for him to do any worse
more switched on in the field. His dismissal was incredibly unlucky too, I think he's been utter shite as captain for the last 12 months but he's going to get this series and one more to sort it out anyway so may as well look for the positives.
He had no idea where his stumps were. Hopefully he will have enough time to find form again. There aren't any other potential captains in the side so really need him to get his groove back.
Sounds about right
actually I'd forgotten that there were TWO Robin Singhs, both one-Test wonders, just like Stuart Binny here
He's more like the West Indian Dominic Cork
Not particularly insightful tbh - his main point being that spinners aren't given enough overs to bowl in county cricket to develop their game.
Well I never.
bonus points if you don't use the words 'elegant', 'classy' or 'composed'
Wont be seeing him in the next test I wouldn't have thought
Lightyears of space between the bat and the ball. Get DRS back sharpish!
Umpires seem to be completely useless without DRS
Where's it gone?
Got a better team, but as we've forgotten how to bat we probably won't. See also: Sri Lanka series.
Absolute bullshit decision and now Stokes has fucked it. Two huge mistakes from the umpire there don't understand why they should be allowed to veto DRS.
Unfortunately though India effectively own the ICC so they can pretty much do whatever the hell they want
we effectively have four established test players in the side. We don't have a better team.
On paper they have a slightly stronger batting line-up but it's not even as experienced as ours is yet. All we really need to add to the team is a good spinner whereas their seam attack is very pedestrian. At the moment we are just making them look a lot better than they are. Our seam attack, on paper at least (and on better pitches), is still one of the best in the world.
Broad and Anderson are great on their day, but Plunkett and Stokes are pretty innocuous. We're nowhere near South Africa or Australia's attacks.
I think Broad and Anderson alone are easily still good enough to earn us third place. After all, this isn't exactly a classic era for seam bowling is it?
with Southee and Boult. So 4th, when we have no spinner and that's the strongest aspect of most of the Asian sides, isn't anything to be shouting about.
But overall we have a slight edge still I think. Even if ours is 4th I'd say India's is still considerably worse.
The Guardian OBO is shit today as well. Who is this tosser writing it?
It's not Steinberg.
England's standard collapse. It's beginning to look like the 90s innit.
our three senior batsmen managed 35 between them. On the same pitch two tailenders got a century stand without breaking a sweat.
6 out of the last 7 tests lost for England and not one encouraging performance in there really, even in the 1st test against Sri Lanka we screwed ourselves.
Should have looked at someone better than Moores coming in, side needs a lift and someone to go and take the pressure off Cook. Was Michael V ever in the running for it? Feel like he would have been a good figure head and helped with Cook's tactical side. Would have had to surround him with good coaches though I suppose.
getting us back to being a top side. I think people underestimate how massive a rebuilding job we have to do. Moores has made a very encouraging start, all things considered. All the new batsmen have been promising. But it's going to take a long time.
Don't rate him at all, this is very reminiscent of the last time he stunk the place up while in charge.
He's given Ballance, Ali and Robson spots in the top six and they've all scored centuries already this summer. Hard to argue he's doing badly in that respect. Collapses will happen relatively often with an inexperienced side.
Just if someone shows they're not up to it once I don't think they should get a lot of rope with which to hang themselves second time around.
Long way to go even in this Test yet though. And you can't really blame Moores for 5 of those defeats, can you? Let's give him more than a few weeks...
If there's one thing that is certain it's that Michael Vaughan really isn't the answer.
Yeah you're right I just loved his captaincy.
Can't stand him as a person though.
I can imagine him making a really good coach, still think Moores was probably the best candidate though, although Mark Robinson maybe deserved the chance given Moores has already had one.
KP's innings in England so far this year: 5, DNB, 1, 24*, 16*, 1, 10
Good decision (for a change) by Dharmasena
get the fuck off the field, stop shaking your head, plumb LBW.
Waving his bat like he's fucking saved the match.
Good to see him get the last over.
Could really stand to see Jimmy and Joe thrash it about for an hour and then run through the Indians.
More likely is that Jimmy gets out in the first over and the Indians grind it out at 2 an over until I'm forced to streak.
Remarkable that we could have century stands for the 10th wicket in both first innings.
Also if Jimmy gets a 50 that will be the first time two number 11s have got 50 in the same test match
We were ticking off the records as they went down. Jimmy's best test score, then maiden fifty, then best score by an England 11, best tenth wicket partnership for England, and finally best tenth wicket partnership ever. Just need a Jimmy century to complete the set, but there we go.
the little shit
a shame i have to go and play cricket myself in a minute
cricket's a ridiculous game sometimes
Genuinely think we could turn them over in the second innings, Broad always bowls well when he's scored runs and the whole team will have their tails right up.
He actually gave himself room to smash that
funny squashed-up pecs too
This is absolutely incredible
What a sport. Should probably push on.
After the first innings here, all fucking Haddins lower order heroics, Agar and Matthews we were owed one.
it wasn't a number 11, but The last Trent Bridge Test v. India turned completely on Broad smashing a few from a similar position.
His batting has definitely gone backwards though.
He seems convinced he's the new Gilchrist or something, but the all-out attack plan seems to pay off less and less.
Love the gobby little shit
Am I right etc
But what an innings. Love that man.
Expected to see about 20 minutes max of England batting, instead got three hours of the Jimmy and Joe show which was pure, pure entertainment. Not often you get to see a world record beaten.
In terms of hard cricket, tension, pressure and excitement though, well, I've had more intense naps. The pitch is a joke. If Jimmy can get 81 there is something wrong, frankly. The only Indian wickets that fell were due to overconfidence, you could see how gutted they were as each one took about an hour to walk off the pitch.
And in other moans, there were ten overs bowled in the first hour. Ten. Are you fucking kidding me?
That today I uttered the sentence "Shame Jimmy Anderson couldn't make it to his century", and actually meant it.
With Anderson on 60. Had a long and involved dream about him reaching his century, was really disappointed when I woke up.
and we'll all pray for him
That's a really lovely piece.
just realised we're gonna go cook robson ballance even if it's 220 in a session and a half
Does James Taylor get a bat in the next test?
