What does it say?
"The organisers of a video game tournament based around the battle strategy title Hearthstone have been criticised for limiting entry to male players only. "
Organisers state that this is to conform with International e-Sports Federation regulations which:
"divide male and female competitions.... in accordance with international sports authorities, as part of our effort to promote e-Sports as a legitimate sports."
they divide male and female players cos that's what other sports do??
You couldn't make it up.
"This is to avoid possible conflicts (e.g. a female player eliminating a male player during RO8) among other things."
So it's *literally* in case they get their arses kicked by a girl?
As I understand it the issue is essentially that it's a qualifier for a tournament that's male only. Because of that they don't want to risk people not qualifying for world championships because they've been knocked out by people who aren't eligible. It could just as well have been a qualifier for an under 25 tournament and therefore would have only been open to under 25s.
Very misguided, but there is some logic underlying what they've done. This international federation need to take a longer look at other sports as there's plenty out there that's open to both sexes, particularly where attributes like strength aren't a significant factor.
and I'm still none the wiser as to how it's not what fidel said.
it's about ensuring that the winners are eligible to qualify.
Similar rules exist in other sports - the Football Conference won't allow teams with artificial pitches into their league in case they earn promotion - they wouldn't be allowed up into Football League. They want to ensure those promotion spots are taken by teams who are able to take them rather than ending up with less teams being promoted than usual.
As I say, very misguided, but not without logic.
I don't see why they wouldn't be on a completely even footing, and the split probably doesn't help if it's not, but if it's not many, then it might not necessarily be a bad thing for them to have a female-only league in the short term, if it means more visibility for the female players.
Still having a hard time giving that much of a fuck about a Hearthstone tournament though
Now I follow the "logic".
Crappy deference to top-down edicts. Let the winner be the winner and let those up on high do the refusing and justifying, rather than doing their bidding by taking the 'irritant' out of the equation for them.
an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.
some define it as physical prowess rather than physical exertion
Darts: NOT A SPORT
Glad we've cleared that up.
sounds like they've done the right thing far quick than someone like the ICC or FIFA would have done.
