is your fridge too cold? 4 degrees or less will probably ruin them, 5 or more you'll be o.k.

in answer to the OP - Pears. Right down to the 10 minute window on the day of when their perfect.
It has a window of about a day where it's not to hard or too soft, and is just right and tasty.
Went from not ripe to 'off' with no window of opportunity for eating them.
They can be too hard and sour though, but I find they never ripen so it must be a variety / picked too early thing. I usually buy a load at the start of the week and they sit on my desk quite happily for ages. Eat them with the skin on, that is the key.
I have never had a problem with cucumbers either, I found one I forgot about in the fridge recently and it was fine.
Some fruits seem to never be edible, I remember having a melon for a good month at room temperature without it ever approaching soft. I opened it in the end and a bit of the inside was alright, but mostly rock hard.
