(this really is a friend, and not me!) (honest!)
without asking strangers to stump up £5k to be spent on..?
Yeah I agree. This is balls
it's not what i'd consider to be truly kickstarter-y. there are other crowdfunded publishing options that seem like a better fit. and a it's a bit weak that there's a publisher 'willing to take the project on', but only as a far as printing, apparently. the dude's asking for living/'research' expenses rather than help with the actual publishing. so we're basically funding the publisher being tightwads here, rather than taking part in 'true' self-publishing. although the line is always gonna be a fine one.
that said, it looks like the end product will be quite interesting. although i can't help but think that there's already a load of websites out there that have done most of the legwork and could get a jump on this by going down the 'blog that ends up getting published' route rather than starting from scratch.
visiting the sites
He won't need four grand's worth of insurance and petrol.
in short, 'pay for me to go on holiday cos my publisher won't' isn't the greatest basis for a request for funds.
otoh it's really not /that/ much different to a simple £15 book pre-order with some optional nature walks, so hey ho.
i funded Dylan Carlson's trip around UK mythical sites and he still hasn't delivered on that. wont get burned again.
was that anything to do with it?
If not for a meditation on the nature of crowdfunding peoples holidays...!
or if you've got a spare £10k, ^those guys are wanting to record a five track EP
no takers then?
wonder if they raised more than £1
