As with most voluntary work you can do as much or as little as you like. A lot of the time the other volunteers will be there just for the social aspect but they will have been doing it for ages so even if they're resting on their laurels and you've got a good idea for how to do things better, show some respect.
you can get some good stuff, sometimes they'll let you take it for free if it's not saleable, eg damaged books
it's only really boring if you're on the till when it's quiet and you've already tidied the shop and put out anything ready for sale etc
it's nice to help a charity and it looks better on your cv than just unemployment

but you might get some decent clothes or other bits out of it. it'll stave off the boredom and guilt of being unemployed.
