Most of the gay characters I've seen recently haven't actually been particularly stereotypical (Bob Benson, Owen Cavanagh, John Cooper, Loras from Game of Thrones).
The bigger problem is that 99% of gay characters in film and TV are shown to be that shrieking stereotype who just LOVES your shoes and speaks in an affected voice, which gives the impression that all gay people are like that when they're about as accurate a representation of gay people as the Sex and the City characters are of women.
