Companies don't understand social media so, therefore, throw loads of money at getting it to work and think that people who work in it are online alchemists or something.
Best thing that most companies can do on social media is be efficiently reactive to complaints/conversations with customers. Not too many sectors where having a proactive and visible social media presence is that important...
I regularly use our corporate account which has the best part of 100,000 followers, and I can do whatever I want with it (well, within reason).
