I hated Gary Barlow before it was trendy

moker [Edit] [Delete] 90 replies 10:31, 12 May '14

But tell me why you hate him anyway.

Nice to see a tax avoiding, sycophant Royalist, beige peddling, Simon Cowell smug puppet is getting his comeuppance.

David Cameron said he shouldn't give his OBE back - Oh by the way Gary Barlow donates to the Tory party. funny that.

MORNING YEAH?

  • didn't everyone used to hate him back in the take that days

then everyone started to love him
and now everyone hates him again?

See always go with your gut people, it seemed like bullying but people must have just sensed he was a bit of a shit.

    • I had a really long an protracted argument about him on Saturday

(when drunk). My mate was saying 'Patience' was a culmination of his career, the underdog really triumphing over adversity, cleverly biding his time.

Where I said, no, that's a made up narrative and in fact Barlow was top dog and Robbie Williams (not that I like him either) was the underdog and people hated Barlow as there was a general consensus he was a bit of a cunt.

And then he only reformed Take That because they were all skint and he's a Simon Cowell twat and basically, not some national treasure that people have been duped into thinking he is, these days.

And lo! turns out he IS a cunt.

Like that ted talk you posted where that guy says that normal, nice people don't really have what it takes to become successful at doing something they love, he's done it twice so there's got to be something a bit 'To Die For' about him.

Also, Barlow has always been notoriously tight - it was one of the things always mentioned about him back in the Take Twat days. So the idea he accidentally poured thousands of pounds into something he was unaware of is total bullshit.

            moker @sadpunk | 12 May '14, 11:11 | X
            • I think we should be very careful

about imposing penalties and punishments for people in situations like this over and above repayment to HMRC of what it is determined they owe.

Tax avoidance isn't illegal. Penalties and interest are already applied by HMRC as the penal element.

                • But he hasn't committed an offence

He just has to pay some historic taxes, with interest and penalties.

If he does, case closed. Talk about any other consequences (based on moral judgement) is utter guff.

              • As I said upthread though

there's a difference in my mind between a mistake (in which case, penalties and interest are appropriate), and culpable and wilful evasion (in which case, it's a criminal matter afaic).

I'm wondering how the law would treat it if an equivalent amount of welfare benefit had been incorrectly claimed. Experience* suggests that it would result in prosecution.

                *not first-hand

                • There is also a difference between

culpable and wilful evasion on the one hand and using tax avoidance schemes that are arguably permissible under tax legislation but which HMRC then successfully argues are not on the other.

                  Raanraals @colon_closed_bracket | 12 May '14, 11:38 | X
                • *willful avoidance

Do you want to pay more tax than you owe?

I still believe in my idea that the Government should set up a paypal account so that people that want to overpay can do so.

                  GayGuevara @colon_closed_bracket | 12 May '14, 11:40 | X
                  • no, there's a difference between legal avoidance

                    and illegal evasion.

Example: legal avoidance = maximising your investments in pensions and ISAs. Illegal evasion = I dunno, accepting cash-in-hand for jobs. I have no idea how the rich evade tax.

                    colon_closed_bracket @GayGuevara | 12 May '14, 11:43 | X
                    • I know there is a difference.

Barlow has avoided, not evaded as you said (hence he has done nothing illegal).

                      GayGuevara @colon_closed_bracket | 12 May '14, 11:48 | X
                      • ethics aside, I think you and raanraals are kind-of right

in that i don't think there'd be enough evidence to support a criminal case for this kind of thing.

However, he's done a shit job of avoiding in this instance.

                        colon_closed_bracket @GayGuevara | 12 May '14, 12:03 | X
                    • But whether a particular type of avoidance is legal or illegal

is often only tested in court when challenged by HMRC after it has been used by enough people. Legislation can be ambiguous and will always have some loopholes in it. Interpreting legislation and providing an extra layer of law is what the courts are for in a common law jurisdiction.

I bet Barlow's tax advisers would have told him that this scheme was a way he could pay less tax within the letter of the law. They wouldn't have told him that it was basically illegal tax evasion but he'd be OK because HMRC probably wouldn't wise up to it.

I was disappointed with the adoration of Gary Barlow from the Gogglebox viewers. Except George's impression was decent.

They reacted to a programme, which, as with the show itself, conceived, edited and broadcast before the judge's verdict. There was a very evident Theroux/Savile taste.

  • Hate the game, not the player.

But the player is Gary Barlow. So hate the player, too.

  • kinda like Barlow.

seems like a nice fella, has done very well for himself, comes across as quite grounded relative to his fame.

we hate people a bit too much for being famous, successful or boring. don't think it's particularly helpful and can lead to some pretty nasty stuff, like the tweet reposted above. if you don't like him just don't buy his records, life's too short to let yourself get angry about celebrities you don't like despite never having met them.

i'm going to award Barlow a Forza Twat Rating of 7%.

    • I'm annoyed at him for the following reasons

      1) His love of the royal family and making that Jubilee song
      2) His massive, illegal tax avoidance
      3) His shit music (or the most part)
      4) His partaking of X Factor
      5) His Tory party donations

All fair enough don't you think? Good.
