back in the days of People Like Us and UK Office, it was clearly a pastiche of a documentary which explained why the characters would be talking the way they were. Audiences have just gotten used to that format now, taking for granted what it's supposed to be, and these segues (SEEEGS) of just talking to camera as though being interviewed are just fucking weird now.
and Phil is amazing in every 'to camera' scene.
but it is a trope that makes no sense
