Live streams of theatre productions at the cinema

blimeycharlie [Edit] [Delete] 27 replies 20:53, 16 April '14

Are these any good? I've noticed one or two of the cinemas here do this, and I've been half tempted to go a couple of times, but I'm not sure if it would be rubbish. Obviously it's not going to be the same as seeing a live play. Anyone been?

I suppose most of you live in London though so could just go and see the play at the actual theatre.

    • How come?

      blimeycharlie @Severed799 | 16 Apr '14, 21:06 | X
      • oh just cuz they were particularly difficult customers

And always sell outs. Havent really seen enough of the actual thing

        Severed799 @blimeycharlie | 16 Apr '14, 21:10 | X
        • Question

do they treat the cinema like the theater when this happens? Like the suddenly expect everything to be middle class n all that and thats why they were difficult because all you had to offer was a crappy hot dog and your luxury items was nachos?

          Yesiamaduck @Severed799 | 16 Apr '14, 21:15 | X
          • Because if that's the case

they should be clipped around the ear, bet they moaned the were kids in the foyer as well.... God what a gaggle of cunts

            Yesiamaduck @Yesiamaduck | 16 Apr '14, 21:15 | X

            • What do you mean I can't get a gin and tonic at the interval, darling?

How frightful. Do you know, there was a young couple in the queue for tickets in front of us and they weren't even wearing evening dress? He was wearing trainers. Can you imagine darling? God this place is SO vulgar.

              (etc.)

              • i saw people get tutted at for having a smooch

                foppyish @blimeycharlie | 16 Apr '14, 21:43 | X
              • its the same as the cinema except for an interval

                TheKennedyCurse @blimeycharlie | 16 Apr '14, 22:02 | X
              • actually to be fair the cinema I worked at

being an indie and instituion in Glasgow was pretty much ideal for them, but they were always incredibly rude anyway

                Severed799 @blimeycharlie | 17 Apr '14, 10:19 | X
            • yes

              Severed799 @Yesiamaduck | 17 Apr '14, 10:17 | X
          • No they treat it as a cinema

            Obviously

            roastthemonaspit @Yesiamaduck | 17 Apr '14, 08:35 | X
            • Well yesh

obviously, I was just wondering why Severed thought the customers were particularly difficult. I just imagine them in the mindset of cinema goers watching a live stream of a Theater Production so the would be no reason for them to be particularly bad

              Yesiamaduck @roastthemonaspit | 17 Apr '14, 10:00 | X
              • just rudeness

                Severed799 @Yesiamaduck | 17 Apr '14, 10:19 | X
                • So I was right?

it's people thinking they're attending a high class theater as opposed to an Odeon, what a gaggle of cunts

                  Yesiamaduck @Severed799 | 17 Apr '14, 10:21 | X
                  • it's not an odeon though

I worked at an independent which to be fair is very middle class and actually quite suitable for them, they're just awful people and there's loads of them

                    Severed799 @Yesiamaduck | 17 Apr '14, 10:26 | X
  • never been

but i know they're almost single-handedly keeping a lot of independent cinemas open.

    georgiabeth | 16 Apr '14, 20:58 | X
  • I saw the Donmar's Coriolanus with Tom Hiddleston at the cinema

Thought it was brilliant. Everything was so much... clearer and absorbing. At the theatre, there's so much other stuff around you apart from the stage and it kinda takes you out of the experience, and I know you also have the audience with you in the cinema but having the action on the big screen made things a lot more focussed and it was a lot easier to notice the subtleties in the acting and staging. Not sure why we needed an interval though as it wasn't a live stream :/

    eltham | 16 Apr '14, 21:42 | X
    • That's helpful, thanks!

      blimeycharlie @eltham | 16 Apr '14, 21:51 | X
    • Did you have the cringe interval interview too?

      God that was awful.

      roastthemonaspit @eltham | 17 Apr '14, 08:34 | X
  • I saw Warhorse as a live stream from the theatre. Enjoyed it.

And also have a ticket to see Curious Dog Night-time...

It bemuses me when people clap at the end...

    Wooly31 | 17 Apr '14, 01:50 | X
  • Saw Danny Boyles Frankenstein at the cinema.

Enjoyed it, quite different from the theatre, but I was really glad I got to see it.

    hip_young_gunslinger | 17 Apr '14, 07:48 | X
  • What's the point?

One of the joys of live theatre is that it's live with no safety net - if someone fucked up their lines or somethign on the cinema version they'd just edit it out...

    Pentago | 17 Apr '14, 10:15 | X
    • Live stream, bro.

      Live stream.

      hip_young_gunslinger @Pentago | 17 Apr '14, 10:20 | X
    • nah the initial screenings are "as live"

      Severed799 @Pentago | 17 Apr '14, 10:20 | X
      • Maybe I'm just being cynical

Wouldn't be surprised if they added CGI and that to make it look more impressive too...

  • I was sceptical

But saw the NT Frankenstein and thought it was excellent. Different experience to theatre but it also was much more than just a static camera from one or two positions which is what I was expecting.

Definitely worth going to for something that's otherwise sold out or inconvenient to get to.

    umlaut_ampersand | 17 Apr '14, 10:21 | X
  • It's excellent

I saw Frankenstein and The Habit of Art like this (though they weren't live), and then I saw RSCs Richard II live, and in the interval was texting my mam about it as she was also watching it, at the other end of the country. Theatre broadcasts are just brilliant IMO, they make it so much more accessible.
