I for one am thrilled.
wonder if they'll picket his funeral
genuinely. would be a disappointing piece of race-to-the-bottom bullshit.
kinda want them to
consensus is that he was a massive arsehole. the only people mourning him are going to be people who knew him. let them.
Putin is a principled man. Granted, his principles might not sit well with yours, and obviously nobody's perfect, but he's a brilliant man for the most part.
by a lot of western press. i think that's a massive, massive leap
about how this sort of thing is broadcast youtube.com/watch?v=LVdU_bLD2-M
when we live in a nation that can't look after its people, whereas Russia under Putin is doing incredibly well economically.
Putin isn't the homophobe Auntie Beeb et al have made him out to be either - he was happy to embrace homosexual athletes at the winter Olympics (footage of which was shown on RT).
I doubt Putin has an opinion on the Slint documentary.
but the idea that russia's (and putin's) stance on LGBT rights is anything close to acceptable is way off
What can you do though? Cultural differences. Besides, we marginalise/persecute plenty of groups other cultures don't - the West is hardly a free world utopia. People in glass houses etc.
Fucking hell. Ah well, Cultural differences.
After every argument about human rights abuses around the world just bookend your statement with "Cultural differences mate" and you'll be alright.
a massive cop-out if I've ever seen it. Imagine if we just never fought for anything we believed in because "we shouldn't fight the norm". There's no way you're this profoundly stupid and not just being a massive troll so I'm gonna leave it here.
It's fine to have a pint of beer in a Mosque, or eat ham in a Synagogue. Which is ridiculous.
and directly funded via the Russian federal government. I'll happily admit that the BBC has a lot of issues, but the two aren't comparable.
Keep on rockin' in the free world.
what a fucking stupid, tedious comment
Nor am I a fan of "outers" who pursue famous people saying they're gay.
But this is different. This is a man who has based an entire religion and hate on homosexuality. Troops go and kill people? "Fag troops". Everything is fag this and fag that. Absolutely everything. Both documentaries about the Westbro Baptist Church addressed the idea that Fred Phelps might be gay. His explosive obsession about it leads only to that conclusion.
Sorry if this annoyed people but people can fuck off. It's not a stupid or tedious comment and the only thing that's stupid or tedious is saying it's stupid and tedious.
Cry me a river if this upsets people.
He is/was a shrewd businessman who made a lot of money via lawsuits and publicity. The WBC represents Christianity about as accurately as David Cameron represents the man on the street.
joke was so 17/03/2014
Managed to monetise being an arsehole/raising people's heckles and turn it into a multi-million dollar business. I genuinely don't think he believed the bileful shit that he so often spouted (or at least not to the extent that he would've liked to people to believe). A genuinely interesting character, albeit a nasty piece of work in the public eye.
he has not passed away but is apparently very ill
it's a miracle!
as much as any other individual
and actually secretly loves homosexuals, as he does all of god's beautiful creatures
always says he thanks the church for proving other less extreme "bible-bashers" how inherently flawed their arguments are, because they're united in disdain for people who take the bible so literally
he was a walking reductio ad absurdum argument against conservative america
is when people take the good book literally. It's a fantastic read, regardless of whether you believe in a great architect or a flying teapot.
I always implore atheists to give it a go. Doesn't do any harm, it's basically Aesop's Fables.
in these boards. Perhaps it's indicative of a cultural shift in general, perhaps not, but it doesn't seem like it's ok to have an opinion which is contrary to the homogenous mulch any more.
Come on mate, give me a bit of credit
He is doing the 'playing the victim' exit move from the trolling playbook. You should be able to recognise it.
and without a moments hesitation he said 'Paul Scholes'
An evil old bastard is dying of old age, comfortably at home, completely unrepentant about being an evil old bastard.
I always hoped that one day he'd "see the light" and realise how awful the things he'd done actually were.
For whatever effect his organisation had on gay rights or people's perception of fundamentalists, they were literally an organisation that would picket the funerals of murdered children.
I hope this at least offers everyone else a way out, and that they can gradually look at themselves, go "what happened?" and reintegrate into the wider world.
That would be good.
The man (and his 'church') has zero influence on anything. How many people are actively involved, about 20?
And whilst irritating, they are in no way dangerous. They haven't (to my knowledge) threatened to kill anyone or undertake any acts of terrorism. They just like to call people fags.
Ignore them (which is very easy to do) and they'll go away. Or they'll still be around but no one will know about it.
by picketing the funerals of dead soldiers.
But leaving that first sentence dead in a ditch where it belongs, I agree with your general point. The quickest way to stop someone annoying you, whether they're saying something controversial or burning a poppy, is simply to stop giving a shit.
People enjoy being outraged and offended. It makes you feel validated. He loved annoying everyone. The world keeps turning.
As if mentalist right wingers weren't massively irked by being told God doesn't love them 'cos they're a bunch of gay lovers.
They're basically one extended family plus some hangers-on, I think the high point of their membership was roughly 150 people. Which means nobody would ever have heard of these fuckhead trolls outside of a tiny part of Kansas if the media hadn't gleefully jumped in and given them all the publicity they wanted, every time they wanted it. Nothing irritates me more than watching Louis Theroux or some other morally outraged journalist allowing themselves to be conduits for the propagation of hate by taking people like Fred Phelps seriously and giving them a forum.
The WBC have played the media like absolute champions, and the media have complied because cro-magnon redneck bigots are always a sure-fire ratings hit. Meanwhile your everyday garden-variety homophobes - the ones who don't picket funerals, are too polite to say "fag" in company, but still would feel uncomfortable about allowing a gay man or lesbian into their family or circle of friends - get to feel OK about themselves because they're not as bad as the god-hates-fags mob. Well done everyone.
Fixing society one forum at a time. Stay strong.
I thought this was a forum for opinion & discussion
You provided your opinion, concluding with a condescending congratulations, and I returned in kind.
is perfectly appropriate when the "everyone" in question is basically the worst people on earth.
if the media's objective is to get a 'ratings hit'? THE MEDIA.
Just so I'm clear, you're suggesting the common house bigot possess full knowledge that their opinions are objectively awful but derives comfort from knowing that there is a cheesier knob somewhere else, right? That doesn't sound like a description of any person who exists.
