Cos a lot of us will miss him when he's gone.
Then he pulled them out and sent them to the same (Comprehensive) school my Mum was at. So... not quite.
who never worked a day in his life.
I always thought he came across very well mannered and pleasant. Granted, he could never hold down the same job for more than a day but at least he applied himself to a number of occupations.
Who used those privileges to help others who asked him for help. Which is what a politician is supposed to do. Which was his job.
if he was the leader of the labour party i'd probably vote for them.
Lovely stuff though
on Ali G.
In his typically egotistical way Benn just has to last a few more weeks than Simon Hoggart.
He knew where he came from, he recognised many of his privileges, and he continually used those privileges to advocate for others who needed someone by their side. That's what a politician should be, and what so many of them fail to attain.
i saw him speak at an A-Level Economics thing and his enthusiasm and passion for politics and economics was infectious. Even if you disagree with his political views, you can't deny that he was a very decent person and a huge contributor to politics in the second half of the 20th century. He did a huge amount for grassroots causes as well, and went to more Glastos than most of us on DiS!
And he is a wonderful, wonderful gentleman. He gave me a hug and I cried.
find that whole sycophantic "politicians are all scumbags apart from Tony Benn he's a statesman" thing really stupid
Talked plenty of sense: When he was energy minister he used to have a map of the UK upside down in his office "Because there's always another way of looking at things". Suggested relocating parliament away from London apparently.
Not sure what his problem with foreigners was, though: “If Scotland wants to be independent they have the absolute right to do so. But I think nationalism is a mistake. And I am half Scots and feel it would divide me in half with a knife. The thought that my mother would suddenly be a foreigner would upset me very much.”
Praise + pointing out that there's nowt wrong with betting a foreigner != Harsh.
