Geek squad assemble: MS Word mail merge fields

inside-outside [Edit] [Delete] 17 replies 17:46, 21 February '14

BOOBIES (.)(.)

Now I have your attention, please assist:

I have a mail merge file in Word. It consists of 1700 letters that were printed and sent on the 9th December. I need to re-print these letters with the 9th December date on them... BUT the date is a field set to today's date so whenever it opens up or prints its now the 21st Feb.

I've tried find and replace but that only works until you try to print or save...

WHAT I CAN DO?

I dunno nothing about

  • Change the date on your computer

    • work computer so i dont have admin rights

There must be some way of tricking word somehow

      • Create a header, drag the box down so it covers the date, type the date over the date, highlight the new old date and set it's background to white. No idea if this will work

        • its got to be a mass solution

I need to change all of the dates at once otherwise itll be a mega chore

          inside-outside @ThingsThatFly | 21 Feb '14, 19:50 | X
          • a header would apply to every page, as long as they are one page letters it might work

            ThingsThatFly @inside-outside | 21 Feb '14, 19:52 | X
            • maybe i could do a macro that pastes

A picture of the date over the top of the one on the letter?

              inside-outside @ThingsThatFly | 21 Feb '14, 19:54 | X
              • what file type does word let you save it as? if it lets you re save it as a basic rich text file it might strip out the date field and convert it text, possibly

                ThingsThatFly @inside-outside | 21 Feb '14, 19:56 | X
                • yeah maybe i could just do a paste special

And do text not formulas or spmething. Probably real simple

                  inside-outside @ThingsThatFly | 21 Feb '14, 21:53 | X
  • Maybe ask your secretary to sort it out?

    That's what I'd do.

    blimeycharlie | 21 Feb '14, 17:55 | X
    Epimer this'd this
  • remove the field and just put the old date on as text....

    Oh_Shangri-La | 21 Feb '14, 18:05 | X
    blimeycharlie this'd this
    • 1700 times (don't think you can get back to the template from the saved merged letters)

      ThingsThatFly @Oh_Shangri-La | 21 Feb '14, 18:41 | X
      • you should be able toas far as i remember, it's been a while since i've been without my secretary

if not i'm sure a find and replace will do it somehow or if that fails redo the merge

        Oh_Shangri-La @ThingsThatFly | 21 Feb '14, 18:49 | X
    • yeah this but theres 1700

Pages. I dont want to have to do menial work.
