*This* is seriously awful: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/ukraine/10653226/Ukraine-protests-live.html
You have truly done us all there.
Somehow managing to trivialise and belittle all female athletes AS WELL AS ballet dancers, gymnasts etc. Stirling effort.
I'm sure someone will claim sexism somewhere, but I can't see it.
I've read the first two paragraphs by the way.
is because they're worried it might compromise their femininity.
is to encourage them to take on more "girly" pursuits, like cheerleading.
She's probably right.
Chances are most things you say about them are true if you're only talking about some of them.
It's her view, expressing concerns that she thinks women have.
I can't see how that' sexist. Incorrect perhaps, but not sexist.
performing certain sports.
"You don't have to feel unfeminine … There are some wonderful sports which you can do and perform to a very high level and I think those participating look absolutely radiant and very feminine such as ballet, gymnastics, cheerleading and even roller-skating.
Why intrinsically should looking feminine be important when considering participating in sport?
of responding to complaints about ludicrously gendered toys by saying "but girls *like* dolls and makeup and boys *like* guns, we're just giving them what they want"
just that for some women it could be important. and that's fine isn't it?
the only thing I don't really like is that it by implication puts down other sports us unfeminine, which is a bit off, and might put girls off embracing them, which would be a shame.
i agree with that - i'm giving her the benefit of the doubt here.
I don't think she's a massive twat or anything. Given her position it'd be nice to be encouraging people into subjects across the board I guess, rather than playing into and reinforcing the stereotypes. If I was a girls' football coach I'd be fucking steaming over this.
Shit analogy, but it's a bit like an education minister saying "look lads, we all know drama's a bit girly, but if you wanted to do an arts subject there's always music."
Even nice people get caught up in this stuff, that's why (imo) it's important to make a big deal out of it.
and my point below, perhaps I'm being slightly idealistic but physical exercise is something that is mutually beneficial to men and women, by all means there should be ample choice regarding what women choose to do, but I don't see how grouping sports into feminine and non feminine categories is beneficial.
i guess she could have just as easily said something like
' we need more variation in physical education, to appeal to students who don't enjoy the sports that dominate our schooling'
or something - it's a first draft
I would have murdered for a nice spot of yogalates on wednesday afternoons rather than getting put through all that rugby bullshit.
I know some of them. Honestly, they exist. They're not bad people.
This is aimed at them. There's no mention of trying to encourage other women to be less or more feminine. Just trying to help everyone find a niche they can enjoy in the WORLD OF SPORT.
I just think it was an unsurprisingly clumsy way of putting it with some odd stereotyping thrown in for good measure.
to be important. I would however suggest that because the physical exercise benefits both parties equally, looking more or less feminine is not necessarily something that should be on the top of people's considerations when picking a sport.
I would say the same thing about eating healthily.
she's holding back the feminist cause.
you said the thing
I said she manages to belittle etc. No one will actually take the musings as anything other than fucking bizarre. It holds back nothing.
do you really have to be a knob?
I just "this"d that guy telling you to stop being a nob. Get a grip.
She holds back nothing, and just highlights an out of touch government department.
that adheres with entrenched and unhealthy stereotypes about gender. if a black mp said that he was going to have loads of fried chicken shops and watermelon vendors set up in the area because 'black people love fried chicken and watermelon' it would still be racist
Only white people can be racist. Racism = prejudice + power.
but it'd still be a very stupid, wrong thing to say.
and presuming shared traits across that group is racism
that's racial prejudice, whereas racism is linked to the exercise of power.
I don't think pegfeet really gives a shit, they're just doing that endearing "aha, I am using the language of social justice to hang you by your own petard!" thing. Sigh.
3=======D - -
That's why the intellectually lazy gravitate to the right.
*Zips up flies*
Rowan: OK. Erm. Tim? Do you have one?
Tim: I'd never thought I'd say this, but can I hear more from Gareth please?
is that only 18 months ago David Cameron was defending government cuts to school sports on the basis of activities just like those they now seek to promote.
As for this particular angle - I've got some sympathy with what they're trying to do, but it's not been pitched very well at all.
