(apologies to anyone who thinks him alive)
Whatever he was called, he did
But bas jan ader was lost at sea during a performance piece called "in search of the miraculous" which was a solo Atlantic crossing. From what I've read about him it sounds like the speech he gave before he set off suggested that he didn't expect to make it. He also used to film himself riding bikes into the canals of Amsterdam and falling off houses and he sent postcards to all his friends with a picture of himself on them crying that just said "I'm too sad to tell you". I named my world of Warcraft character after him
I also like his mother poem:
From the deep waters of sleep I wake up to consciousness
In the distance I hear a train rumbling in the early morning.
It is going East and passes the border. Then it will stop.
I feel my heart beating too. It will go on beating for some time.
Then it will stop.
I wonder if the little heart that beaten with mine, has stopped.
When he passed the border of birth, I laid him at my breast,
Rocked him in my arms.
He was very small then.
A white body of a man, rocked in the arms of the waves,
Is very small too.
What are we in the infinity of the ocean and sky?
A small baby at the breast of eternity.
Have you heard of happiness
Springing from a deep well of sorrow?
Of love, springing from pain and despondency, agony and death?
Such is mine.
South African poet. Often referred to as "The South African Virginia Woolf".
Killed himself in Sea(ttle)
It was kind of a "thing".
QI about an author who was going to commit suicide by walking into the sea after a long battle with depression, but he got stung by a jellyfish, and then went back to write his most renowned work.
I can't for the life of me remember the author atm. Anyone?
What's obvious is that jellyfish are the unhearaded painful muses of the literary art world.
this was Evelyn Waugh.
ann quin, contemporary of b.s. johnson, killed herself by walking out into the sea at brighton beach. everyone should read 'berg' by her.
