bit of a shitter, eh?
It is getting to the stage where it will try and breed. To stifle that would be cruel, and to allow it to breed would lead to inbreeding. Other zoos offered to take it in, but they felt that would lead to inbreeding also (presumably all captive giraffes came from a small pool). They made the comparison with culling deer, which is done in huge numbers to little complaint. Giraffes are not endangered, there are a lot in captivity, and apart from being pretty to look at, how are they different to deer?
Having said that, they did seem pretty quick to get it done, bolt in the head, carved up in front of some schoolkids and fed to the lions (literally). I can't help thinking there could have been another way round this. Could he not have had the snip?
still overwhelming 'aws' in the world for it.
my issue was relaly the whole carving it up in front of kids. Reminded me of the bit in Futurama when bender is saying goodbye to his son and is crying, then you just hear Farnsworth revving a chainsaw.
and with other animals in other zoos they just give them contraception. It almost felt like they just couldn't be bothered to find an alternative solution.
it was like they were determined to go ahead with it for whatever reason
I was listening to one of the top blokes from the zoo being interviewed yesterday and my first thought was that he was South African: was quite surprised when I realised he was Danish.
I get that there is a need to control numbers which, as steinbolt says above, is not uncommon with wild animals. But it seems a strange thing to be doing to a captive animal
Lars von Trier is remaking Chris Marker's 'Sans Soleil'
Zoo Manager - hmmmmm, might be a bit of an outcry over this, we should keep it on the down low and avoid any further controversy.....
Zoo keeper - Ok. They say they're ready to proceed with the autopsy, boss
Zoo Manager - are there any kids out there?
Zoo keeper - Ummm, yeah, loads
Zoo Manager - Excellent. Proceed.
including children put there with their parents' permission, is standard procedure at Copenhagen Zoo.
To be honest, to more that this kind of thing is seen, the less taboos there will be surrounding death, anatomy, and the food cycle.
someone say something about that
and more that they shot a giraffe in the head for no reason
Shooting it elsewhere would've meant it took longer to die.
Straightforward, honest, matter-of-fact, calm and patient in his explanations for the policy, and knowledgeably dismissive of the interviewers attempts to whip up hysteria.

Just like Ted Bundy, then.
The tributes to the giraffe seemed genuine and he almost had to stifle a tear...
"One of my close friends, a billionaire, said that he wanted to transfer a few million so we could save the giraffe. He could easily have lived in his garden in Beverly Hills, but the zoo director was not interested in a sale. I’m angry."
giraffes are dickheads.
it really did, the way he dismissed other zoo's offers and said they should use the capacity for another giraffe, its like he wants to create some giraffe master race or something
Nobody usually gives a shit. A small enclosed space with animals doing nothing but eating and fucking. You're going to end up with too much of something.
Just because it's a fucking giraffe, this has got publicity. Places can offer to buy up an individual but can you imagine how difficult that actually is to do. Good on them for not selling to some shit who wants a designer giraffe in their garden, or no idea how to look after animals.

It's like watching Phil Jones scramble backwards and sideways at the same time as different bits of his brain tell his body different things. The difference with the giraffes is that they don't fall over though.
...knowing the consequences;
a) Ooooh cute baby giraffe - everyone will come and see it and it will be Corfu for Christmas for the zoo owners, and;
b) a giraffe too many in a year and a half. Ah fuck it, think of Corfu.
