DiS 5-a-side football tournament // Sunday 9 February // 2 PM
Sobell Leisure Centre
Hornsey Road
N7 7NY
www.aquaterra.org/sobell-leisure-centre/finding-the-centre
Back by popular demand, the fifth annual DiS 5-a-side football tournament will take place on Sunday 10 February, indoors at the Sobell Centre near Finsbury Park.
It is very simple and straight-forward, if you want to participate, you will have to sign up as an individual (not as a team!). You don't have to have played DiS football before, this invitation is open to all.
Once we know who is playing, everything will be thrown in the mixer and teams will be compiled and announced. Where possible, friends will be grouped in the same team, and sworn enemies will be kept apart. Feel free to put requests in who to play with/against, either in this thread, or via PM/email/text if you think it's controversial.
No prizes, you're just playing for the honour. Who can forget last year's winners, the amazing Amersfoorts Blond?
Exact match format, rules & regulations to be published some time next week.
The details:
- we play on 5-a-side indoor pitches
- there are changing rooms with showers and lockers
- 5 min walk from Finsbury Park tube/rail station (Piccadilly/Victoria line)
- arrive on time, as all teams need to be ready and complete by the time we're due to kick off (latecomers may not be admitted)
- matches will be between 15 and 20 mins each
- expect to play 4 or 5 matches in total
- once the teams are known, a shirt colour will be suggested for each team, but you can change this (as long as it doesn't clash with other teams)
- bring trainers with light-coloured soles
- shinpads are optional
- deadline for signing up is Thursday 6 Feb at midday
- teams will be announced Friday 7 Feb around lunchtime
- 7 pounds each will be collected on the day BEFORE the start of the tournament (no pay = no play)
- the whole thing should be over by 5:30 PM at the latest
- post-match analysis in the Tollington pub on Hornsey Road (opposite the Sobell Centre)
Come on, you know you want to. Put your name down by replying below.

Yeahahahahhahaaah!
Bagsy I win
just joined the facebook group.
i.e yes.
i've forgotten last years winners actually.
was it the team i was on? that's quite embarrassing.
Last year's winners:
fishplums
waffle
meths (c)
keiths_tele
i_remember_laughter
Vintage
ah, so I didn't dream it.
Might be up for this
I'm a tentative maybe
IN
You better believe I'm IN
Request not to be on meths' team, if he can't even remember our glorious victory last year. I'm playing to win.
like a true winner,
i only look forwards.
ultra-tentative yes
this sounds great but stupid band practice arrrg
how long are these usually?
2 or 3 hours
depending on number of teams...
Last year we finished at 4:30 PM
and the year before that at 5:30 PM
Me and my ladyfriend will be driving back from Norfolk that morning
I have an 11 a side match mooted for my team, but the amount of games that have been called off recently I'd be surprised if it went ahead unless we have a sustained dry period. Also I'm pretty sure I wouldn't make it back in time for kick off for that as it is half an hour earlier and in South London, where I would probably make 2:00pm here in North London.
Thus, IN.
Whoa whoa whoa...
Ladyfriend?
Sorry meant my mum
We have become good friends in recent years, despite our troubled past.
No way
No seriously
We've hardly played a game for the last three months. Keep getting cancelled!
IN
On the basis that 'you don't ask, you don't get' can I be on a team that meets the following criteria:
- has a really good keeper
- has someone who scores a lot
- wears a dashing kit
??
not really sure how to break this to you...
IN
Be warned though, im pretty crappy at 5-a-side. Almost always end up losing my balance and doing a Goldberg-esque SPEAR on someone.
Polite request to be on your team.
you'll fit right in.
Welsh Rich
and Jesus James
and fishplums
and KEN CHU
and SarcasticFringehead (hmmmm)
are IN
15 so far
want me to see if I can get a team together?
Feel free to invite one or more mates
And if you can find 4 you and your friends can be one of the teams and play together. As long as they don't pull out 2 days in advance ...
Yeah I'll make sure that wouldn't happen.
I'll let you know if anyone is interested
INNIES
Loz
Duncan
James E
Jake S
Henrik is IN
fucking
IN
My mate is in too
Dominic Amodio
i'm IN for this
my friend Chris who played last time is also IN if there's space
Jamie (Chrisfriend #3) is IN
At the moment it's looking like it might just be me IN
and then if we need it My friend Chris would be up for it
and have also had a tentative in from my friend Adam who played once before.
oh yeah!
I'm in.
what are the numbers looking like for this?
Exeter has a pretty damn exciting weekend to compete with and I'm still not decided.
4 or 5 teams
You're in Exeter every weekend, you must be bored by now.
I know! And literally nothing ever happens until this weekend
I'm IN
like Aphex Twin (?)
IN
In
shout me if you need more players - can probably sort a few.
OUT!
29 confirmed, 2 maybe
So that'll be 5 teams (4 with 1 sub) if everyone turns up on time.
Expect the football to finish at 5:30 PM.
Rules!
* Goals can only be scored if the player shooting is in the opposition’s half, regardless if an opposition player touches the ball or not.
* After a goal is scored, the game is restarted by a keeper’s ball.
* Ball can't go above height of pitchside barriers - unless deflected off keeper or dead object (goalpost, barrier, etc.). Free kick taken from point where ball was kicked, unless the ball goes out of play.
* If the ball goes out of play over the barrier, play restarts with a free kick from where the ball went out.
* Outfield players not allowed in opposition keeper's area to gain advantage - keeper's ball if so.
* Outfield players not allowed in their own keeper's area to gain advantage - penalty if so.
* Keepers are not allowed out of their area and/or handle the ball outside their area to gain advantage - penalty if so.
* The keeper and outfield players may switch position as often as they want during the game, but bear in mind the rules above regarding inside/outside the area, and gaining advantage.
* Keepers: no kickouts, no overarm throws.
* Backpasses are allowed, unless you have just received the ball from the keeper. Deflections off the keeper don't count obviously, only a return from a direct pass/rollout is forbidden.
* Freekicks: opposition players at least a full pace away from the ball.
* Penalties: taken from stand, no run-up.
* Players are not allowed to hold on to the pitchside barriers to gain advantage - indirect free kick to the opposition if so
* Team captains are responsible to ensure that each team is ready to play at the start of each match, in the right colour shirt, as switchover between matches has to be quick.
* After each match, both team captains should agree on the final score and report the result back to the scoreboard.
Fuck the rules!
are these free kicks direct or indirect?
Ball can't go above height of pitchside barriers - unless deflected off keeper or dead object (goalpost, barrier, etc.). Free kick taken from point where ball was kicked, unless the ball goes out of play.
* If the ball goes out of play over the barrier, play restarts with a free kick from where the ball went out.
Indirect free kicks.
So if you knock the ball back to the keeper
he has to pick it up and roll it out?
Yes
more rules question
do goals count if they go in off the barriers?
I am now 99% IN for this by the way
Oh, I'm IN! :D
Watch me.
Another Chrisfriend™ has signed up
I think it's Walley, but if it is I'm disappointed his first name isn't actually Walley. A big let down.
It was months, nay years, before I found out it wasn't his first name
Imagine my disappointment

except, you know, Will.
(safety wink)
Would really enjoy a bit of time outfield for some of the games
I'm decent in a defensive role bombing up late to join attacks.
Happy to mainly be GK though.
No problemo
can't believe you didn't dish out some shabsybants in retort.
could've definitely made something
out of the fact I described my speciality as 'bombing up late'.
^ well that was prophetic
i can share some GK duties if you like
have done a bit of keeping 5-a-side
same, more than happy for some gk time
played in goal 5aside quite a bit.
best team ever
thanks guys, guess we can swap it around a bit when people get tired.

not very good at matching forum names to actual people
Dunno who anyone else is other than Louis the keeper.
I've got a green football kit. Knock off Chicharito MExico kit.
Oh - and I'm complete waste in goal in 5-a-side. Just getting that in there early.

you will not need to go in goal
Re: shirts
If your team prefers to wear something different from what is suggested, that is perfectly fine, as long as:
a) there is some uniformity on what you wear as a team; and
b) it doesn't clash with what your opponent is wearing
As always, I'll bring a set of bibs for emergency shirt swaps.
waffle's long-term strategy is now painfully clear
gain the trust of AVH, become his most trusted advisor, then bring in all his followers to form a shadowy cabal around the patriarch.
He sees this tournament as his opportunity to consolidate his power. If he wins, it's basically gonna usher in a 100-year reign of terror.
He's always been a bit 'off' hasn't he? Never trusted him.
I'm not making this up!
First, they came for the Hoogys
but I wasn't a Hoogy, so I said nothing
:(
If you can't beat us....
waffle's mate ohgood has a nice ring to it
spent so long trying to see what time this was gona start
in the title init
Like the dual dates though,
Hoogy actually loves it when people turn up on the wrong day, obvs
Sunday 9 February
obviously
so does anyone have anything green I could borrow?
I can bring a very crappy green t-shirt for you
I have a green Botafogo shirt
The closest you'll get to playing like Brazil.
that'd be sweet cheers
sorry Will, you're not offering me total football.
whey-o-whey-o
Team Esselens

In other news, I am gonna have to beg the nurses for tramadol at work tomorrow I think :(
Get me some plz
there in ten minutes ffs
mammoth 5play esselens
every outfield member of our team a contender for man of the tournament, altho sad to lose Vikram halfway through. gonna say that maybe Chris (V's friend, not poor defeated waffle) was the standout if we're splitting hairs? although really we worked incredibly well as a team, with the touch, composure and quick interchanges to really pressurise and dominate everyone we came up against - and we were goddamn solid, always covering and intercepting, (almost) always taking the right option.
word up to the generally brilliant standard of goalkeeping in the tournament too - Ken's performance probably the standout, but whoever that Red guy was, I doff my cap - practically unbeatable.
had a nice chat with Ormsby on the tube home - came to the conclusion that if anyone nabbed the golden boot from him (with 6/7), it was probably either James (Juxtaposed) or one of the Greens (I have a hunch our goals were almost evenly shared amongst the front 3, with Vikram getting one - don't think Jack scored - too damn committed to the art of effortless defending for his own good). aforementioned defeated tormented waffle only got 5 I *think*.
um, some other teams did some things. lol.
Team Salmon
suggested shirt colour: ambiguous
good tournoi again hoogs.
some cracking bants.
Well played the Greens
Sorry for calling you a timewasting ****, Hoogy.
Whoever's on my team next year: good luck, all the best.
Good tournament
Greens were phenomenal. Jack mopping up at the back, and then if anyone did get round him, then Louie was on hand to basically be a brick wall.
Bit gutted we had them first because they clicked straight away and we took a while to get going, but we were decent enough once we did.
Shame about the tired legs and the flat ball in the last game, both teams had some shots saved that perhaps would have had a bit more sting to them had it not gone so soft.
Genuinely think Louie on the green team made the difference, but all of them put in a phenomenal shift so it's tough to pick.
Ken was incredible for the blues, and in goal had a blinder.
Jamie and Duncan both also had incredible games in goal for the reds, and Jake and Smee did some tasty interplay for the whites.
(I also scored 6 Ormsby <3)
Pretty sure I scored 7
Two against greens, two against blacks, three against whites. Actually thought Jake S probably scored the most but I wasn't properly keeping up with the other games. Too busy drinking Ribena and breathing heavily.
Results:
1) Team Esselens (in green) 12 points, gd = +10
2) Team Diepenbeeck (in black) 7 points, gd = +4
3) Team Couwenbergh (in white) 4 points, gd = -8
4) Team Avercamp (in red) 3 points, gd = -2
5) Team Backhuizen (in blue) 3 points, gd = -4
good things:
kens locker key.
ormsby and royter arguing the whole way through.
hoogys time keeping.
jakes shirt.
james' maradonna goal.
Hoogy has lost his refereeing verve it seems
Just because you gave me a whistle and yellow/red cards
doesn't mean I am the referee ...
I always thought this was just taken as a given.
Especially confirmmed when Ormsby was looking for someone to yell at/appeal to
Just remembered Ken 'the jailer' Chu
Great stuff greens
Bit nervy in the last game, although the flat ball didn't help. Mind you, pretty sure that blunted Red Chris more than us, so...
As mentioned, everyone played really well, and everyone did a shift defensively and going forward, with Louis being great in goal. Love his 5-a-side specialist keeper move of sitting on the ball to save it.
[from up thread]
"are these free kicks direct or indirect?
Ball can't go above height of pitchside barriers - unless deflected off keeper or dead object (goalpost, barrier, etc.). Free kick taken from point where ball was kicked, unless the ball goes out of play.
* If the ball goes out of play over the barrier, play restarts with a free kick from where the ball went out.
Indirect free kicks."
No mention of that free kicks given for BRUTAL ASSAULT are also indirect. WE WERE CHEATED.
Serioauly though, really good fun, cheers Arthur, and looking forward to next year. I'll go on your team Will.
That was wonderful.
pretty disappointed that was disallowed.
but then there is this too...
* Team captains are responsible to ensure that each team is ready to play at the start of each match, in the right colour shirt, as switchover between matches has to be quick.
So glad that was disallowed.
you were on the greens team?
bants shabs etc
Yeah, when I looked at it at the centre, it was a bit dark. Like I said to you though, I'd worn it the last time I was on green, and no-one said anything. Maybe the colour's faded or something. How many green football shirts to people have though?
Apologies if anyone got really confused by it. I don't think I received an erroneous pass from an opposition player all tournament though.
Though
I think we all know that this is the reason you won
What a hollow victory
lol you did, from Ormsby
:D
Pretty sure we just didn't bother marking you either
I finally pass, and this happens
:D
Big fan of how we managed to boil down our gameplan into one bellowed cry of "TACTIC".
Not even plural.
Good stuff.
I enjoyed Jamie yelling
ALL OUT ATTACK when in goal for the reds.
Go Loz!
sadly 'the tactic' wasn't as successful as last time.
Well done Greens
Excellent throughout and more than lived up to their billing as pre-tournament favourites. Was reasonably satisfied to keep it to 0-1 in our final game against them.
From a Red perspective, I thought we were brilliant in our first game against the Blues (plus Ormsby hadn't found his shooting boots yet), but suffered for lack of fitness as the tournament went on. As mentioned above, Duncan and Jamie both had excellent spells in goal, and Walley and Jamie scored a couple of nice goals for us.
I've badly injured my right foot from kicking the side wall in frustration during the second game - what a dick.
No team got battered 4/4, which is nice.
Most of the Greens could be MOTT, but I'd go for Captain Salmon.
Let's do this more than once a year.
Definitely think this could be bi-annual
I reckon there should be another one in summer
instead of one of the Qatar 11-a-sides where everyone dies because of hot.
v. sad to miss this one.
not too bad
given no subs and the lack of a vaguely competent keeper. we struggled against pace and let in a few long-range efforts that the likes of Super Ken would have saved. greatly enjoyed blocking ALL of Chris's shots against the reds. would like to note my thumping finish, cruelly ruled out just because the game had finished.
Didn't enjoy my time spent in Loz's pocket
few do.
Great goal
unfairly snatched from you.
Can't remember if we've mentioned this before
but does Louis remind anyone else of a young Stalin?
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/6e/Stalin_1902.jpg
whoa
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SfygeIxYwuw
So much fun
Would love to do that more often
I have this vivid image of Ken throwing himself down to make a save, wildly grimacing whilst bleeding profusely from the knee. Hero!
^more often please
was is this sticky?
yes
I scored a grand total of 0 proper goals despite playing upfront for most of the tournament. Good return. Sorry for fluffing all my shots boys. I was pretty hungover as well. Didnt do justice to the TACTIC (patent pending, meths 2014).
In short - Ken 'Buffon' Chu's done me there.
Mate, the TACTIC is OLD.
That's how we won the tournament last year. Obviously needs the right players to work though.. (safety wink)
"oi, dickheads, get round the sides!"
and the shot from someone on the blue team that twatted Ken in the face, somewhere near the corner of the pitch
:D
was me. soz ken!
This ended up being fun
Played pretty badly in the first two games, but the Blues finally got into the swing of things in the third and fourth game where we actually played properly, resulting in the biggest win of the tournament, and well deserved.
Thought the teams could have been better balanced - the green team was quite clearly the strongest, with no players that could even have been perceived as a weak link, but I guess they didn't actually batter anyone so no massive harm done.
Comedy Blues moment - Will calling me a stupid cunt for shouting at him that he wasn't marking anyone at a free kick, when he was basically propped up against the fence with his hands down his shorts about 20 yards from anyone. To be fair, the fence was probably one of the standout players for all teams, so maybe he was marking that.
Ken's goalkeeping was mega. Actually our team performance in that 5-0 win was a joy to behold. Very Renford Rejects.
Someone must have scored more goals than me, right? I got 7. If not that means we had the top scorer and the biggest win, and still finished last. It's a funny old game.
"Someone must have scored more goals than me, right?"
classic orms.
early on your shots to goal ratio was excellent
just shifting and shooting at every opportunity. None going in for ages.
First game was truly abysmal, must have had 20 shots with no goals
I blame the ball though, like everyone else who didn't do very good shooting. Definitely the ball.
Ball was totally fine
until the last couple of games.
Also, nothing to do with accuracy, more power and making it easier for the keepers
Internet sarcasm detection fail
Must be used to you genuinely making up poor excuses for terrible shooting
while simultaneously suggesting everyone else is shit
x
Enjoyed that
Suffering today with some monstrous allergy shit which started during the middle of the tournament. Mad sneezing fits - proper knackering.
Cheers to Hoogy for organising.
good tourney tbh
Our team improved every game, culminating in the biggest win in the tournament (5-0) - we were so close to a fairytale ending of NOT COMING LAST denied by the late equaliser by whites in the final game. Drama!
Cheers for the goalie-love, folks - i only looked good cos i was in for one game so didn't have enough time for howlers.
did look pretty bashed up towards the end though - bloody nose and then a ball in the face in the first game and the knee doing a crap terry butcher impression in the last and then somehow getting cramp while in goal (thanks jack for standing in and keeping the clean sheet while skipping around the blood stains in the area.....)
would love to play more although i like the annual-ness of it makes it feel a bit special.
JuxtaposedJames scored goal of the tournament i think
green team deserved winner
hope you recover soon vikram
Indeed, Heal quickly Vikram x
cheers guys
the knee's pretty big, but the pain's getting less bad despite me hobbling around on it all day, so it's hopefully just soft tissue stuff.
get well soon buddy.
and send me the hospital bill.
