like gender neutral? if its a letter i'd just go with 'to whom it may concern' or something.
i just thought the phrasing of the question in my head was funny and thought "i'll post it on DiS"
why is it 'sir/madam'?
(rhetorical, i can take a guess)
shouldn't it be 'madam/sir'?
(alphabetical order seems a better way of doing it?)
(see also: 'her/him' and 'he/she')
The '/madam' bit is a fairly recent addition, in a similar way to how married women were often given their husband's initials on formal correspondence (i.e., to take an example, Mrs A Blair, rather than Mrs C Blair or Ms C Booth).
I always knew there was something a bit off about marckee.
How many people on DiS have ever been faced with this conundrum in real life? My guess: none.
