Many are dedicated and conscientious public servants who are driven by a desire to tangibly improve people's lives from a range of ideological foundations.
Some are horrible, power-crazed and truculent mind. Same as any system.
Easy to be cynical about 'em, but many of them do a tough job and want to make the world a better place. Can't fault it.
A mixed bag of the good, the bad and the ugly. Adequately representative of the society over which they preside.
is the question "are politicians all the same as each other?" or "is the demographic make-up of politicians the same as the general public in terms of good folks/idiots?"
Used to be really interested in politics. Sadly, ten years of dealing with politicians on a regular basis has made me jaded and cynical.
I don't think they're all the same, but a lot of them are pretty similar.
Also, potential sub-thread: Party activists, especially on Twitter, horrible people, even if they're saying something I agree with, probably put more people off politics than they bring in.
but they're still best treated with scepticism

she did a phd and her thesis was called 'Understanding the lifeworld of social exclusion'. Lifeworld is a good word, i like her.
he's read ulysses a million times and at undergrad everyone fancied him cos he was the token young cool male professor
People who say they are are trying to be cynical, but just come across as closed-minded.
but sadly it's the ones least inclined to dishonesty and doublespeak that seem to be taken the least seriously.
