I'm in Paris this week and I kind of don't want to be

Pegfeet [Edit] [Delete] 85 replies 13:17, 15 January '14

BACKSTORY

My boyfriend always wanted to go to Paris. I'm not that fussed. For Christmas, I booked us a trip to Paris for this weekend. On our previous holiday together I'd taken charge a bit and it had been a cause of minor conflict, so I said he could be in control of everything this time.

Three days after Christmas, he told me he'd cheated on me with one of his best friends back in October. We split up. I cancelled the hotel, but couldn't cancel the flights so decided to book into a cheap hostel in Belleville and at least have a look around.

Long story short, as of this past weekend, we're back together. But he can't afford his own accommodation right now (I was going to pay but can no longer afford it) and it's probably a bad idea at a bit of a delicate time.

So the end result is I'm in Paris this weekend and I don't really have much idea of what to do. I'm not really that enthused about the city in general. Never been before, but there are plenty of European cities I'd rather see first.

At the moment I'm planning to spend the Saturday seeing the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame and all that crap. Maybe do the walking tour as well to see some more of the sights. Is a river cruise worth a look? Probably freezing this time of year. Sunday I was going to go to the catacombs.

That's about it so far. Leaves me with many hours to fill, and two days to fill them. I don't have much money, but I have a go-getting attitude and a cheeky smile. I have found everywhere in Paris seems to be several miles from anything else, which is quite annoying, as I usually like to spend city breaks walking between things and getting a sense of the city as I go. I think I'm going to have to use the metro to get round everywhere.

Please tell me what to do. I'm considering not going. But I do kind of want to go. I feel like I should go.

  • Tough break!

I went to Paris last year and wasn't super keen on it, but I had a great time and saw lots of good things. For me, it was the art I loved - the Louvre and the Musee D'Orsay and the Cluny are completely spectacular, but if you're not really into that, that won't help you much.

There's a falafel place in the Jewish quarter that is totally amazing and totally cheap, so just eat that if all else fails.

    • Ooh, apparently I can go to the Louvre for free

as I'm 25. Might as well. It'll be warm too.

      • DEFNITELY go to the Louvre.

It's enormous and you could spend days in there, but a couple of hours seeing the big hits at least will be well worth your time.

It'd been quite a long journey to be fair.

  • Go, for fucks sake!

Great place, so much to see and do and you can see a hell of a lot just strolling along the Seine if nothing else!

Saturday night is the biggest hole in my itinerary right now. If you're about to show me some cool Parisian bars and hangouts, that would be absolutely awesome. I think daylight hours I can fill with sightseeing. :)

I'm not getting in to CDG til 8pm on Friday so by the time I've got to my hostel and checked in it'll probably be too late to do much. Flying back around 6pm on Sunday so guess I'll need to head to the airport at about 2pm.

          • It's not tiny, but it's definitely not London sized.

            • Oh, that's cool

Much rather walk if it's feasible. I think I was judging it from how far away the catacombs/my hostel are from central places, but I guess most things are probably pretty centralised along the Seine.

              Pegfeet @lemonbrickcombo | 15 Jan '14, 14:15 | X
      • Arrived at CDG a similar time.

Thought it'd interesting to walk to our hotel (Montmartre). Bad call. It took about an hour through a load of dingy streets and the constant threat of being mugged in French.

        Get a taxi.

              • If that takes about an hour with a suitcase, then possibly yes.

Admittedly it was a poor decision.

Thinking about, when I went to New York on arriving at my hotel on about 86th street decided to walk to Times Square. Absolutely miles away.

Going to give up walking for a while.

86th St to Times Square - 2.7km - pretty easy walk

CDG to Montmartre - 23.3km - you did that in an hour?!

over half of my monthly wedge goes on my rent and the crumpet has dried up.

Though life is pretty good. Weekend and that. And I am reducing my hours and cooking more and running harder. Sweet life.

          • The curse of modern city living...

Is that typical of Paris, paying 50% of income on rent? I think it's typical in New York. London's cheaper by comparison if so...

            GetOffMyLawn @lemonbrickcombo | 15 Jan '14, 14:33 | X
            • Figures realeased today show that on average,

London renters spend 54% of their income on rent.

Not sure if that's before or after tax, and I'm assuming that it's Greater London.

Be good to see that stat in more context (with annual comparisons etc.) as well as the stuff you mention.

Their permanent exhibition (history of music and musical instruments, mostly european) also keeps you busy for some time as it is with an audioguide and you get to listen to a lot of the instruments.

I had a toasted sandwich and a glass of wine which set me back 20 odd euros, and then I sat on some 'grass' outside a big palace or museum or something, it was a carpet of fag ends and crisp packets. Then I went back to the bus station to get the bus back to London. I had to stop over there on the way back from Spain in that ash cloud malarky. Hated it - probably more to do with my mindset at the time though.

Musee de Cluny – lovely building, collection and the Lady and the Unicorn tapestries are stunning.

Musee de Quai Branly – has some really interesting exhibitions as well as interesting permanent collection from, erm, primitive peoples (as I think they were originally going to name it).

  • I would love to explore a city on my own

There have been several times where I have not been places I wanted to or eaten somewhere pretty rubbish just to keep the peace. And vice versa for my girlfriend probably. I had a great time on business in London for a week just strolling about and visiting interesting places.

As for Paris, I found it a bit spread out and the people pretty unfriendly generally. And there were lots of tourist traps, restaurants, people selling tat, it was expensive, the lot. But then that is similar to London if you don't know it really. If I went on my own I would love to just wander round some weird non-Louvre museums and eat in random Falafel places.

    • I went to Barcelona on my own in December

and spent all my day time in NY alone.

I do love going round on my own, but in Barcelona I found it became really different once the sun went down. Then I started to feel a bit lonely. Went to some backpacker bars and had some small talk but it was a bit of a downer.

I think the deal I had in NY was the best. Spent all day exploring. Met the friend I was staying with when he finished work, and we went off to do evening activities together.

      • True, maybe the night times could be a problem

I amused myself in London for a week and ate out in the evening, then just went back to the hotel and watched TV and drank tins of beer, I had my laptop and free wifi also. Probably not so much an option abroad. You could always get up really early and see some nice sights and parks when they are quiet, grab a coffee and croissant somewhere, then carry on with your day and just have an early night I suppose.

  • You're staying near where I was a few weeks ago (nearest Metro: Republique)

The Buttes-Chaumont park nearby is lovely for a stroll.. there's a little place in the middle of the park too called "Rosa Bonheur" which is a cafe/bar in the day, but turns into a club (avec disco ball) at night.
