Neither approach is overly helpful.
It was much more likely white British people were on benefits than "immigrants" (or "Europeans" we could call them).
If people come here to work, what's the big deal?
is that there is no work.
hand of the free market! simple!
loads of people posting shit like an empty check in desk at an airport saying `All the Romanians are coming are they!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL`. Astonishingly unfunny.
I don't think I've seen an analysis/comment on the whole story which hasn't enraged me greatly to be quite honest. Farage in particular has been dreadful on the matter.
It's all a bit of a storm in a teacup. Daily Mail will probably wheel it out every couple of months to sell a few more papers, Guardian will do similar.
I was surprised to see it at the top of both BBC and ITV news yesterday: New Years Day must have been a bit slow on the news front
Farage isn't always this abysmal - but on the Romanians issue he actually delves into deep-seated racial prejudice using dodgy stats to back up his claims about the Romani peoples' supposed penchant for begging and theft. Fear-mongering of the most calculated and naive kind.
My hunch is that we'll see perfectly manageable numbers of immigration from these countries in the coming years and it'll all be forgotten about.
I need a hug.
But perhaps that's just me.
Pissweak bants on twitter still fully deserve to be decried regardless of whether or not they're preferable to the right wing press's take on the matter y'know...
to specifically mention the 'bants' when there's so much nasty coverage around at the moment.
One has barely registered, the other actively incenses.
I referenced the nasty coverage (albeit not using those words and perhaps with a lack of full clarity) in both that post and in my reply to NoahVale.
Think you're trying too hard to take exception to something which really doesn't need it to be honest. Our thoughts on the overall issue, and the negative coverage of it, are probably exactly the same.
I think I saw about 3 tweets that weren't
'bwahhhrgh bwarrrgh there are no Romanians in mah breadbin Brwwaarrrgh"
Worthy cause but Christ everyone had to have a go.
great bulg of lads.
not sure that works actually.
The romaining puns are awful
which is surprising.
Just cos I'm a bit sick of turning on the news and seeing a Brass Eye Romanian Special.
However a couple of Irish relatives have liked it, and I'm pretty sure they probably thought I was being serious
which claimed to have interviewed people who said they couldn't wait to come to the UK.
A Romanian paper investigated the story investigated it and found out the DM reporter had gone there posing the question in the form of 'if I offered you a job paying x large amount of money, would you go?' unsurprisingly many said yes. It was reported minus the context of the leading question and when the quoted people in question were tracked down they were not only surprised to be represented in this way, they also said 'if I had a choice, I'd go to France not the UK'
I know it is a slow news day, but there were more press at the airport than Romanians. The Mail will do alright out of it, they will go apeshit the first time someone with any connection to Romania commits a crime or gets given any kind of handout or NHS treatment, that will keep their readership simmering with rage.
but then I noticed how artfully "fear" is in scare quotes whereas "smuggery" is not.
Still got it.
these actions from both sides hinder serious discussion of the issue at hand, and neither are helpful. (probably need a disclaimer to say i don't think the smuggery is as bad as the fear mongering.)
that despite the putatively even-handed nature of his post, the scare quotes quietly suggest that the fearmongering accusation is false, but the smuggery is real.
Even if you don't agree with him, you have to respect his abilities.
Was it UKIP who got a load of leaflets printed with a stat saying there were potentially 56million Romanian and Bulgarian immigrants waiting to come over - when what they'd done was just add both the countries populations together?
Also, there's a load of photos in various newspapers of some minister welcoming the first bloke who has flown over. He had a hat on with a price tag on it. Imagine he was just some fella coming over for a holiday?
Think it was part of their Easleigh by-election campaign.
53% of people want a referendum on Europe*
*Of 83 people polled
So, 44 people want a referendum then
Think the figure they gave was 29 million. Pretty sure thats not its population.
Population of Bulgaria: 7.35 million
Population of Romania: 21.33 million
So they're rounding up as well.
surprised to see him coming out to bat for UKIP.
Nice to have some diversity around the place, though.
I don't know where you got that from?
I may have misunderstood the cut of your statistical jib, it seems
