If he's the shadow education secretary it's not an issue. It's only if Labour get elected that he potentially becomes a chef who won't eat in his own restaurant.
It's not like he has (or even will have, given the propensity of Shadow cabinets to change when coming into Government) any actual power over Education.
I don't even necessarily think it's wrong for him to send his kids to private school (if he chooses to) if Labour get elected. That sort of narrative, whilst inevitable, is always so reductive.
and, if you're a Labour politician, there are inevitably going to be questions to answer about it. I don't necessarily think it's 'wrong' on an individual level but, if Labour's narrative is gouing to be about reducing inequality and challenging the social divisions of Conservative policy, it might be good for Labour policy to have an Education Minister who uses state schools. And I do think it exposes you a bit when talking about education if you're claiming to do a good job whilst also tacitly admitting the job you're doing isn't good enough for your kids...
Which is probably true.
Beyond the issue of competency with the education ministers atm, is the opposing ideology of the two parties. The vast majority of Labour voters, and a greater percentage than the Tory vote, will rely on the state system entirely, with no other option. To highlight the fact that you are above this, as a Labour MP, would seem really arrogant. Couldn't imagine Andy Burnham using Bupa, for example.
WHAT THE FLIP IS GOING ON??????
Russell Brand said to. So this isn't going to get much.
Little nugget for you there.
if he sends his kids to state school (probably a bloody good one), then he is taking the place of some poor kid who could take it, and the Duke could jolly well pay for his own kids' education.
An Old Gower (shame he read his degree at the other place)
Wants to sack teachers
He seems very sound indeed, few more of these on the front bench and Labour might get somewhere.
don't even fancy him
He's very dashing (if not conventionally good looking).
His kids would be bullied to hell if they went to a normal school
And you don't think that's a fucking big story?
No idea what's going on here.
bad teachers result in children of colour and basketball hoops and cans of ginger beer, presumably
Anyone claiming otherwise is a cad and a charlatan.
