what are the happening hotspots for a sauced up knickerbocker such as myself
Where are you staying/what are your plans for starters?
kings cross area
but may also be around waterloo for random and complex reasons
...but 10 minutes walk will lead you up to Pentonville Road and Upper Street which are both solid with good drinking dens - it's on strip all the way up to Highbury & Islington tube.
Down by Waterloo there are some decent options, but keep in mind that they are all super busy with the rush hour crowd. Lower Marsh and The Cut have most of the best options. A couple of good backstreet options are:
the Young Vic bar (on The Cut) is actually really good. Usually some interesting beers on, last time I was there they had a limited edition Anchor Steam 'inspired by' Twin Peaks.
Down Lower Marsh Street (hidden 'round the back of Waterloo) there's a place called Bar (http://tinyurl.com/qanc5yb) which is a cafe by day and stays open until midnight serving nice drinks in a cosy environment.
The Lord Nelson (http://www.lordnelsonsouthwark.com/) does filthy burgers which are stuffed with cheese, has graffiti and tacky stuff everywhere and is good fun.
The Ring, just over the road from The Nelson, is a bit nondescript but serves Big Apple hot dogs which are incredible.
Also if you need somewhere that stays open late around Waterloo you're only a 20 minute walk from Borough High Street and the all-purpose St Christopher's Inn (full of European backpackers, stays open until 2 or 3 on weekends).
I'll have to check it out.
The ol' rice pudding spoon in Southwark is probably my favourite place for food
I am a huge fan of the darts and skittles at the Bears Hollow in Camden though. Proper good atmosphere.
Theres a gang of kids that keep bullying me about my hair
I know things
and the Queens Head (on Acton Street) are both highly recommended near King's Cross. Or if you're feeling flush, the bar in the Great Northern Hotel is pretty cool.
I was in there last week and a troupe of knife dancers led by some kind of Dickensian villain barrelled in, mucked about with blades, passed around a top hat for spare change and nicked off within 10 mins. Also they had Beavertown Black IPA on tap.
My mate runs the brewery too so... that's handy.
I was drinking it all night before I clocked that it's over 7%. It was fantastic though.
is a great spot, if a little seedy
