who owns your local chippy/ies?
2 near me. name: unknown.
1 turkish, other looks like Italian.
Nearest 6 that I can think of anyway. Gino and Tony and Mario are some of the names of the guys that work in them.
All round where I live they are owned by Chinese people (and I know they are Chinese because they give you a calendar at Chinese NY).
No idea what it's called. They have a working old-fashioned pup up numbers till which is awesome...
...although the sign actually reads FAM LY F SH BA.
4 years later, the son of said family was on my University course. We are now very good friends. SMALL WORLD.
Here's my local chippy. Utter shite. Only ever been once. Name: unknown. I believe he too is Turkish.
Nice guy though as he always waves at me when I walk past
It was great.
My current local is the same as ThierryEnnui's, I haven't been, and am not inspired by his review.
More of a generic fried chicken and kebab type place masquerading as a chippy. Except the kebab meat is that pre-cut stuff they just heat up in a tray, not even on a real spit. The fish is horrific. Dead flabby and the batter falls off/disintegrates. He asked me to microwave my own mushy peas when I got home. They were brown. Some pissed up nutter from the pub next door barrelled in while I was in there and it all got a bit edgy. Borderline racial bants. Also there were two small children ordering about 14 portions of chicken nuggets, presumably for a grand, Friday evening family feast.
It's crazy that we don't have one decent place anywhere near us. Shadwell has about 15 general chicken and burger places around the station but no room for an actual chippy. Looks like you'll have to suit up and head to Smiths Brasserie (actually, you definitely should. We finally went in after a year, and my word it's good).
never been in any of them.
his sons/other family members who work there are Scottish though.
Italians own(ed?) the posh one in town.
It's called Olympus and is obviously run by Greeks.
There's a big banner outside that says 'Under new management'. Guess what? It tasted exactly the same as the time I went six months ago.
Run by local Northsiders. Does a good bacon burger. Chips are so-so.
I'm also close to two Chinese takeaways and two kebab shops but I haven't eaten from any of them. Might rectify that later.
