is The Wire Season 5 worth watching?

incandenza_ [Edit] [Delete] 16 replies 02:50, 15 September '13

seems like it's going to be a massive, cynical, anti-climactic drag. after the unparalleled brilliance of Season 4 and all, idk. everything I've read suggests so, anyway. and fuck that mess of a theme tune.

try not to post spoilers, please.

  • If you've watched four series already you have to watch the final series surely?

However, you're right. The fourth series (or season) is the best of The Wire, perhaps best series of any TV show ever. The fifth is easily the weakest series of The Wire. However, the final episode works brilliantly and makes sense. There's been only a few excellent final episodes to acclaimed and/or long running shows; The Wire is one of them. The fifth series can be described as very good rather than amazing. It's still essential viewing.

(That's the best reply I can manage whilst drunk and not typing any spoilers as requested to avoid.)

  • you probably won't like it the first time

the themes seem to take an absurd/boring tone, but i always find something new to like about it every time i've rewatched it. it's a definite grower, especially if you watch it not in sequence with the others.

but yeah, they end it very well so it's worth it for that alone.

  • honestly think you'd be better off just leaving it at the end of Series 4.

Series 5's just basically a mix of characters you don't care about, characters you do care about acting completely insanely, and then a massive montage right at the end.

  • Definitely. Still the weakest season

but the weakest season of the best show ever is still worth watching.

  • Although it's the weakest season

It's still fantastic and unmissable tv IMO.

  • Worth it for the final couple of episodes

There are plenty of amazing scenes throughout it actually - just a couple of ongoing things that are shite.

  • kik's kind of otm, I reckon

out of all the best drugs-centric characters, only Omar's left.

Marlow, Chris and Snoop were compelling in the context of the last season, but now I'm just fed up with them, and bitter that Michael and Duquan got caught up in all of that.

I can see that it's more realistic that way, same with the way that crew are kind of untouchable at the start of the season, and how the general optimism has turned somewhat to shit. but I can't see where the relief that you had in previous seasons is going to come from.

I'll watch it, but I can't see myself opening up to it.

  • Just watch it, it's good.

  • Short answer: yes

Longer answer: yes, although it's incredibly tonally jarring on first watch, drafting in broad-stroke narrative elements that seem totally at odds with the subtlety of the series as a whole. But the last 3 or 4 episodes are as good as anything in the whole series. Moreover, like, say, Fincher's Fight Club, it improves a hell of a lot more on second/third watch, when you know what's coming. I prefer it to season 2.

    • i loved Series 2.

for me, Series 3 is by far the weakest after 5, but i know many people think it's the strongest.

      4 > 1 > 2 > 3 > 5

      mala @ashstreath85 | 15 Sep '13, 13:51 | X
      • I've heard criticisms of 3

also read an interview with the dude that played Bodie saying that lots of people said 2 was boring.

I may well end up preferring 2 to 3. the location/character switch was off-putting at first, but there's so much depth to that season, and the ending is oddly satisfying.

3 was brilliant, but Brother Mouzone is kind of a corny character, really. he doesn't really seem real. the climax of that season might be the most thrilling part of any season, but once you get past the novelty of that character, idk.

I think the scene on the balcony with Stringer and Avon is pure magic, though.

        4>1>2=3 for me

        • 2 was the best by miles

It might be that a whole new raft of characters were introduced compared to the 1st series, and I dont really know of any show that did that. It does jar after how good the 1st series was.

          2>1>3>4>5

          • but to answer your question

YEAH obviously watch it, ties it up nicely without being too romantic. Theres still a storyline in there which must give the writers nightmares now though

            Songs_about_ducking @Songs_about_ducking | 15 Sep '13, 14:32 | X
  • yeah it's fine

    shrewbie | 15 Sep '13, 14:30 | X
  • The McNulty storyline is annoying and unbelievable

The only mis-step in the whole of The Wire.

The rest is still pretty awesome though.
