Football Thread - Monday, 26th August 2013 edition

SenorDingDong [Edit] [Delete] 68 replies 12:05, 26 August '13

Liverpool, Arsenal and Spurs all win, while Man City falter at Cardiff, meaning that tonight's game between Man Utd and Chelsea will all but decide the title.

Mourinho utters some sentences that mind-game starved journos leap on like manna from heaven.

Champions League play-off second legs this week, as Arsenal look to go a week without a crisis and Celtic try and overcome a 2-0 deficit to some people from very far away (a 2-2 draw with Inverness Caley Thistle at the weekend doesn't add to the confidence).

Whisper it, but Gareth Bale might be joining some Spanish mob - you heard it here first.

  • just in case you missed it in the other thread

went to thebarca/levante game last week. Terrible atmosphere.

    Silkyskillz11 | 26 Aug '13, 12:11 | X
    • I went a few years ago and found the same

probably because the crowd is half full of football tourists like us. Apparently the fans don't get excited for anything but the Clasico - even games like Athletico, Valencia, or the Espanyol derby do little for them. Success fatigue.

      Donnie @Silkyskillz11 | 26 Aug '13, 18:30 | X
  • Think Cardiff more or less deserved to win

Defended extremely well for all of the first half, and for all the talk of us picking them off when tiredness set in they in effect did that us. Extremely frustrating that for all that we've spent in the transfer window we're playing a shite defensive midfielder at centre back and Hart is still flapping goals in- two goals conceded from set pieces to Frazier fucking Campbell is simply not good enough. I've got faith that Pellegrini can circumvent the blueprint teams have been successfully using against us for more than a year now, but it's depressing watching this exact same thing- teams defending narrowly and then preying on defensive errors on the break and from set pieces in the last third of the game- again and again and again. And yeah, you joke but I'm not seeing Chelsea in particular dropping many points at relegation candidates this year.

    • Think Zaba was the most culpable yesterday but Hart has been woeful now

for a season and a bit. Should be dropped from both England and City 1st Xi till he remembers how to do the fucking basics.

      wilykit @Parsefone | 26 Aug '13, 15:15 | X
    • Pretty much summed it up perfectly there.

I'm increasingly fed up of Yaya Toure's habit of disappearing after 30 minutes of any game we're not completely in control of.
Navas should have been the difference between yesterday and last season's struggles, but for some reason spent most of the time he was on the pitch picking the ball up in central midfield.
It's unfortunate the Vinny and Nastasic are injured at the same time, but with only 3 real centre backs in the squad, it couldn't have been a shock to anyone in the set-up that we've been left badly exposed by it.

      DillingersWheelman @Parsefone | 26 Aug '13, 15:33 | X
      • Not really sure Yaya was to blame yesterday.

He played pretty deep and did exactly what he did against Newcastle which as play it out to Silva and Fernandinho. Clichy and Hart culpable for the first, Hart for the second and Hart and Zaba for the 3rd. Clichy and Zabaleta are dependable so you can chalk it off as a bad day at the office. Hart's problems seem pretty endemic to me.

        wilykit @DillingersWheelman | 26 Aug '13, 17:40 | X
  • Always find early-doors BIG games a little odd.

Hard to get hugely pumped so early in the season- it doesn't feel like much is at stake yet. Doesn't help that it's a Monday night either. Personally felt that Chelsea had the better over virtually all the 5 games they played against United last year but that United have some exceptional finishers. I'm leaning towards a draw but the two sides have such an even record against each other that it's always a hard fixture to call.

    • Interesting article in yesterday's Guardian, saying that Willian "may have had no say in the transfer."

      http://www.theguardian.com/football/2013/aug/23/tottenham-chelsea-willian

Hard to believe. Pretty sure a shitload more money and the chance to play for the Premier League favourites (albeit from the bench) wouldn't have been the hardest of decisions.

      Player power still rules, right?

Vidic and Ferdinand would mark Lukaku, Torres or Ba out of the game whereas playing 4 AMs makes that harder to happen and expose United's midfield a bit more.

  • Gone for the heaviest-pressing, most counter-attacking team possible, there.

Oscar, Hazard, Schurrle, Ramires and Lampard are the fittest midfield/attacking options we have. Even a fully-fit Mata doesn't have the same running him and although Lukaku isn't just a bettering ram he won't be able to help out as much as Schurrle.

man utd really need to exploit the space down the wings, would've been great to have rafael there at RB (although Jones has done a good job defensively), and welbeck needs to get stuck in a bit more.

that counter on the 43 minute mark is what utd need to be wary of

great defensive performances from JT and Vidic i think. way too many HOOFS from Man Utds defense, but pretty disciplined overall. with Moyes still bedding in I think thats a decent result.

  • Sounded like an absolute shiter!

Like someone else said not sure why the put these big games in so early in the season, it was always going to be disappointing!

    Lo-Pan | 26 Aug '13, 22:56 | X
  • Poor entertainment, but no-one turns down a point at Old Trafford.

Think the first time we kept the ball for more than 30 seconds was injury time- very sloppy in possession. Too big a game for either manager to lose, I suppose- all the focus was on Chelsea's formation but it's not like United steamed forward in numbers all that often.

Think Lampard was fortunate. I probably wouldn't give that if I was a ref and saw it clearly, but plenty understandably would.

Probably the only interesting part of my football-watching evening ... Al Jazeera had Mark Halsey on as a pundit and he was surprisingly candid about not really rating Martin Atkinson. Nothing too scathing but clearly a man who hasn't been joylessly media-trained.
