Obtaining cheap train tickets Newcastle to Wolverhampton?

Tito_Santana [Edit] [Delete] 12 replies 09:55, 15 August '13

So, I'm going to Wolverhampton travelling from Newcastle in Dec. Obv the 12 weeks advance tickets aren't out yet but for the past few months have been checking the advance tickets from that particular time and all indications are it is going to be about £100 return (and thats using 2 singles).
Anybody got any ideas of how I can make this cheaper? Buying a rail card is not worth it so any other idea would be a help.
It could be that the Dec tickets are cheaper but that would seem unlikely. I dont really want to leave it to the last minute in the hope of cheap tickets either as that would run the risk of them being moe expensive.

  • at £100 return, buying a railcard would be worth it, as it would shave a few quid off.

Plus you have it for a year.

look at breaking your journey up- sometimes that makes things cheaper? Or how about a coach and train combo?

  • Wolvo-Manchester

    Manchester-Newcastle

Got Stoke - Newcastle pretty cheap by breaking it up like that. Trans Pennine Express do 50% off if you have a railcard too.

    • Genius! Never even thought of that Doh!

      New-man - £15
      Man-Wolv - 8.50

      DONE.

      Many thanks!

      • It's usually worth looking at that sort of thing when you're going on a long journey

I got Brum-London-Norwich for about half of what it would've cost to just buy Birmingham to Norwich

      • Not exactly

Currently these companies have tickets on sale up to and including these dates:

        East Coast 01 November
        Virgin Trains 05 November
        First Great Western 30 October
        First ScotRail 01 November
        East Midlands Trains 08 November
        Greater Anglia 01 November
        CrossCountry 05 November
        Transpennine 02 November

        As found here: http://www.thetrainline.com/ticketalert/

They get their information from here, which has more precise dates:

        http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/times_fares/ticket_types/44703.aspx

  • Some lines have their defacto tickets on sale even further than the 3-ish months in advance

Meaning that looking at prices for some journeys for 6 months from now can look disproportionately expensive.

You can sign up to alerts here: http://www.thetrainline.com/ticketalert/ which inform you when the cheap tickets become available. Each company is different and inconsistent as to when exactly they come on sale, so chuck in your dates, and you can be first in line.

This page gives you all the information you need: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/cheap-train-tickets

The approach of splitting the journey suggested above is a good one, particularly when applied to London based journeys as usually the fact that London is involved (though I know that doesn't apply in this example) inflates the prices, so have the London leg of the journey as short as possible.

  • A good site for trip splitting in general is

    http://www.splityourticket.co.uk/

This deals in the walk up on the day fares as opposed to advance tickets.
