Just watched ... Does anyone seriously believe the apollo thing? I wish I did...
i.e. The Da Kubrick-i Code, yeah?
I was looking forward to reading the DiS thread after watching but no such luck.
i think it's even harder to swallow when you realise that all the theories are closely linked to the specialist areas of each person.
'oh right, so the guy that specialises in the holocaust thinks that it's all definitely about the holocaust...which is funny, because the guy who grew up near the american Indian lake thinks that the American Indian lake has a massive part to play in the meaning of the film'
(or something like that, i can't remember exactly what their fields/backgrounds were, only that they all related to their theories.)
but my point is, it's pretty much people just transferring their own preoccupations and obsessions into the meaning of the film, without discovering any real objective hidden meanings. it's just a cinematic Rorschach test. which is fine.
but the Minotaur skiing poster theory.....jesus.
it's heavily inferred both in the original text and by kubrick
Is it on any of the streaming services?
I'm going to give it a watch later.
It's just a fucking horror film dweebs
really fun watch
Strapping Young Lad's version is maybe even better but this is the original, and it has a video
It reminded me in style of Adam Curtis. Also, I'm surprised nobody's mentioned the soundtrack, which was really great.
Obviously the theories are total bollocks, but that doesn't really matter does it?
Not sure if any of it is covered in the documentary
THE SHINING spatial awareness and set design
The chap who does the voiceover (even with a slightly grating socuse accent) does some other excellent discussions of movies here. Enjoyed The Thing and 2001 particularly
and how it's meant to be disorientating who I THINK is the same guy who does the experiment of running the film forwards and backwards and projecting them together which I think makes it worth watching the documentary alone
Was really excited for it, but it was just some weird guys, who you never really meet, or get any back story of or develop any relationship with, blathering away, often without knowing which one it was, mostly pointing out continuity errors. Was bollocks.
