Does anyone here just wear headphones at their desk to stop people coming to talk to them?

So you're not actually listening to anything but you just have headphones on with no noise coming through? Or are you always listening to stuff when you have headphones on?

  • surely being allowed to listen to music all day at work would drive you mad?

much better to interact with people and to concentrate on your work.

    • no I mean every now and again, if you have to concentrate

you put headphones on to stop people coming over and disturbing you, but you're not actually listening to anything

      • not really.

it's against company policy, and probably health and safety regulations.

    • I dream of being able to do this.

My work is mostly unrelated to the people around me so getting my head down with some tunes would help me out.

I got told off for it being "unprofessional" to have headphones on at work. Despite having my own office, never being visible to clients here and people on the other side of the office being encouraged to listen to music to help with some of the more repetitive tasks or to drown out the sounds of general office drudgery when you really need to concentrate.

    • They need to get with the times.

Our office is all based around making it as comfortable as possible for interns and graduates to make the transition from Uni to the workplace, so we have lounges and libraries dotted around the place, very casual dress code and veryone always has headphones on.

I can see a few people that I suspect are not actually listening to anything though. It's fine but I was just wondering if it was a thing.

      • it's just my boss in particular being a control freak

She can't accept that other people can work at all differently from her and still be productive.

Not everyone here is that inflexible.

  • i do this sometimes

but i am listening to music most of the day in the office on my headphones.

  • i do frequently wear headphones without having any music playing

but i do it in order to listen in on conversations that the participants think i can't hear them having.

    CUNNING.
