a diversity course to make sure that i'm not doing racism and i suppose to make sure i remember to check my privilege
You check that privilege c_r, you check that privilege at the door
Especially foreign ones.
or is it just you, Bernard Manning?
along with data protection and HSE. blaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. i told them i'm exempt because i'm friends with feminists. they don't even understand
now i am not racist becasue the trained me nto tho be
It's 'Blacks', not 'Coloureds'
He left the presenter speechless when he revealed "I don't like gays but my step daughter is gay, and black, so what does that make me?"
Cos I'm pretty sure it is.
i said it outloud and everyone called me a racist. that means um bongo is definitely racist
they don't drink it in the Congo at all
Fucking hell, pal.
It's practially the evilist drink ever.
Where the establishment belittle important ideas and encourage those of us they're fucking over to follow them into the land of regression instead of progression.
i'll report back on whether the phrase is actually in the training material
I doubt the general public are that aware of the concept of inherent privilege yet (sadly).
i'm just clutching at straws to get wishpig to come back. i miss her.
it gets mentioned by people like you in every other thread as an attempted pisstake and that's it. there's a lot less polite ways of telling someone to check their privilege...
hence it's use in the OP.
oh and since it's going that way
I think, I dunno
I'm liking where this is going.
I wonder why it is that I'm told I can't use a word that NickDS(and all you guys) frequently misuse on here. I wonder why I am the one being told I can't 'start' in a discussion about a subject that *has already been raised* and that NickDS *has already contributed to*. I wonder why Theo wasn't the one who was told to shut up when he started calling people out for misappropriating a concept and using it to further belittle the marginalized groups it actually exists for. It's only ever women on here who are on the receiving end of this pre-emptive 'give it a rest love' bullshit when gender inequality is discussed.
Dont mind me though, I'm only asking to be treated equally as a human being.
apart from a reference to c_r's OP up there.
Theo made a comment and I just said it seemed to me like a jokey reference (which c_r this'd). That is all.
Then you came in started calling me out (''people like you'') as if I was doing saying something else.
The ''don't start'' was don't turn a light-hearted joke thread into the sort of one where you attack me and others for no reason like the one you just posted. To turn that into a ''I'm being censored and told to stop'' is bizare
I have already explained my post up there and in none of them do I discuss or comment on the phrase check your privilege's wider social meanings, just the observation that it's used jokely on here.
The mere presence of a 'jokey reference' is part of the drip-drip-drip attempting to undermine the idea.
I don't think anyone could be accused of taking a cat_race post entirely seriously and I wasn't, I was commenting on how things are.
my point was actually about the irony of NickDS telling you not to start in a subthread about privilege since you could, as you have, quite easily argue that's an example of privilege in itself.
But since I've got 15 mins until I go home why didn't you tell the class how a throw away comment not to turn a joke thread into the semantic shit slinging match it's become is a example of privilege?
the issue comes from the fact that of all the people partaking in the discussion the only person who was instructed not continue (jokily or not) was DarwinDude. Who in a forum largely occupied by men could traditionally be seen as having less privilege than others.
I've probably expressed this quite badly but I hope you get the idea.
it meant don't start attacking/trolling/making acusations (the ''people like you'' bit). She could have joined the (non existant*) ''debate'' in a more reasonable way.
* it wasn't even a debate about privilege or anything just (as I have said many times) a comment on it's used as a joke on here.
but I'd guess she is/was bothered by the idea of the term being used in a joking manner, rather than acknowledging it's actual definition and why it's important, which is what Theo's initial point was about.
I have no opinion on its use either way.
(It's alright I'm just killing time on the commute)
But as soon as I post it's no longer legitimate or acceptable and will only result in a hosile and unproducitve discussion, which is also entirely my fault not yours. Hey maybe if you don't want to hear what someone has to say on a particular topic, don't start discussing it on a public forum.
Don't mean to go all 'semantic' on you but we've not been discussing semantics.
2. You're the one that came in with accusations to said observation
Plus I was discussing semantics of the phrase don't start with wolves up there not you.
IM NOT HAVING A DISCUSSION THIS IS JUST ME POSTING WORDS
you're the one who drug me into this with ''people like you'' and I have since been making random assumptions that have no bearing on anything I've said.
anyway, I'm bored now. Thanks for making the afternoon go faster. Have a good weekend.
Let me get a brew, she's not done this for ages and I love it
And yes it is becoming a bit of a thing. Just as (white) people are implying 'intersectionality' is somehow too complex and stupid a name so we should just ignore the idea completely.
I'd like to also clarify that my post was just a general observation as to how it is used that I didn't think c_r meant it in a political correctness gone mad sort of way.
Because I don't think it is.
I thought you'd be into that shit?
I've not read it because I'm sure it's shit
i can tell.
I brought it up 4 teh lulz
I'm in a good mood. Was only joshing.
i don't recall saying that about old people to be honest. but they probably should be sent for glue. sounds about right
if someone told me that the greek girl sitting in my office was pakistani, i'd have to believe them
How do you feel about people who are different to you?
is this because I'm a woman?
Evil Sexist Sean Adams
Surely that's racism of sorts, but using it to positive effect, like they're having to do in the Police Force to get representative numbers of black and asian officers?
It could be classed as discrimination but that would involve completely ignoring the point of what is trying to be achieved.
It's not racism because racism refers to the systematic way in which society favours one race over others, and in this country you cannot but accept we favour white people. Is that understandable? Entirely, given our history and the predominant ethnicity, but that doesn't mean it's good for society and that we shouldn't seek to minimise or eradicate it.
even if the race you're discriminating is the majority.
That doesn't mean that it's not the right thing to do though.
why do you want it to?
