but if I had the money I'd always go for chicken
haven't bothered reading enough to get a grip on it.
Turkey's a funny one though, because Erdogan has broken the power of the army (good thing) but is also more of an Islamist than a secularist (bad thing), so I'm not sure how I feel about him.
i.e. they're a good bunch of lads?
but it does mean that any government of Turkey has effectively been in power with a gun held to their head.
It's somewhat unfortunate that the first government to break free of this has been a fundamentalist Islamic one.
wouldn't it necessarily be an Islamist govt that would break free of this?
not necessarily over the secular thing.
3. Dark Eldar
2. New Model (the band)
3. & Navy Store
come up with a replacement or risk losing all 3
In recent times the army has only really stepped in when Turkey's secularism has been threatened though (as their constitution demands), so I'm not too sure how positive limiting their power has really been.
Erdogan has effectively been governing in a non-secular way, with serious human rights abuses and an ultra-conservative social policy. I can't see how the EU can allow Turkey entry with him or his party at the helm.
has put me off giving a shit about it.
"I'm a firm believer in human rights – what? That comedian I don't like believes in them too? Ah, fuck it."
well I say interesting
a guy on BBC News the other morning was saying that basically it's an orchestrated middle-class riot, not really repressed people looking for liberty, just a load of bored semi-skilled office workers wanting more dough.
you can't just go setting people on fire because you want a payrise and don't care for the PM much. sadly, the Arab Spring has made people think they can.
nothing really excuses police brutality, but the demonstrations/riots on the whole seem pretty pointless, and once night falls, provocative.
What's your point, spaceman?
instead of.. this, basically
Sarcasm aside, there are plenty of sources online where it's abundantly clear that it's more than an "orchestrated middle-class riot, not really repressed people looking for liberty, just a load of bored semi-skilled office workers wanting more dough"
There are people being killed and blinded by their own government out there, getting run over by tanks, it's about so much more than wanting a few extra quid - I've literally no idea where you've got the impression that that's what it's about. Presumably that's what Auntie Beeb has been saying, then?
what's the craic with this park? is that basically it - government wanted to flatten a park, locals had a whinge, a couple of them attacked the police, the police went well overboard in return?
sorry if my knowledge is a bit hazy on the subject. i don't really read the broadsheets as you never get an unbiased opinion on these things. i've tried looking online, only really CNN's offering any sort of explanation in under 40,000 words.
god knows what i was watching on the Beeb, but it was about 4am and i was half asleep.
i'd probably trust the Beeb about equally.
when the Turkish government have prevented a lot of coverage of the event and have shut down any domestic debate about it.
maybe outside of Turkey than inside. I don't read enough Turkish newspapers or watch enough Turkish TV to be sure.
Some people just got tear-gassed about five minutes ago.
