This to do in... Manchester / Hebden Bridge

sean [Edit] [Delete] 24 replies 10:07, 1 June '13

I'm staying in Manchester for the next few days as I'm currently on the road with Ed Harcourt.

We're playing Hebden Bridge tomorrow. Anyone ever been there? Apparently Sylvia Plath's grave is there and it's the Lesbian capital of England, and that is literally all I can find out about it from the web.

Hopefully heading out for some drinks in Manchester tonight (there's talk of going to an EMO night at somewhere called Satan's Hollow!?). Feel like I've been to Manchester 10 times or more now for gigs and not really seen much more than the Northern Quarter. What should I do in a few spare hours today? Must be some of the city I should see. Not sure I can stomach getting a Salford Lads Club photo taken...

  • Sylvia Plath's grave is indeed there but fucked if we could find it

It's not actually in Hebden, you have to climb a bit of a hill to Heptonstall, which is really nice with a couple of tiny pubs and tea rooms etc. And then two churches one of which has her grave, somewhere. In amongst about 300 others.

Hebden Bridge is generally lovely though, if you get a chance try to catch a film at picture house. It's like 80 years old and you can get a proper brew in a mug in your seat while watching the film.

but it's nice to wonder about for a bit

I like to get a few pies from the pie shop and go walking on the moors nearby or down hardcastle crags maybe

    the pies are really good

        • Heard rumours it's the suicide capital of the UK

but the surrounding countryside is pretty lovely. Probably due to the heavy rain, being stuck in a valley which makes everything sunny in Leeds (and everything fucking awful where I come from!)

      • also the lesbian capital of the north

Comfortable shoes, pies, allotments and heroin. Hebden Bridge.

  • Satan's Hollow is OK

Another Manchester alternative club that seems smaller than it actually should be, but if you like emo/gothic/punky/metteley stuff then should be a fun night.
