THANKS AMAZON, YOU TAX DODGING BUNCH OF SHITES.
The number of people shouting 'hey did you know 50 Shades actually started as FANFIC?' proves it was never made implicit in the marketing, even if publishers were happy to have their brands exploited for cash.
I mean obviously fanfic has existed since the days of Homeric legends, but still, there's something unseemly about everything Amazon does.
Publish and sell it too a market on a multi-national scale.
I also mean that Twilight was essentially wish-fulfillment fan-fiction. It's worse than half the slash fiction on the internet.
50 shades wasn't fan fiction because it wasn't about the same characters in the same world yada yada yada,
then on the other hand there's people out there writing (and in some cases getting published for real) Sherlock Holmes, Casablanca and Gone with the Wind sequels and spin-offs.
but especially all these examples mentioned in the article seem to be written by and for teenage girls, while providing the rights-owners a nice little extra bit of revenue from fan-fic . . and given that Amazon's other creative projects, like the notorious film studio, were notable for being incredibly bold rip-offs against the contributors, I would expect the small print on these contracts to be astonishing as well . . .
the published version doesn't have those two characters in it, so the published version doesn't count. even if all she did was find and replace the names.
and not one that uses characters, situations etc created by someone else, so it's not fan-fiction . . am I making any sense?
