I think I'm opposed to this, as something of a philistine one of the main barriers I perceive within the art world (rightly or wrongly) is the impenetrable nature of understanding some of the work (particularly modern art) and I'm pretty sure I'm not alone in this. To remove the information which can help you gain a bit more understanding seems to me like a backwards step which can only really alienate less-experienced visitors and reinforce that cultural barrier.
On the other hand, the most recent exhibition I went to (The Light Show at the Hayward) I made a point of not reading up on any of the works whilst I was there in order to try and have an uninfluenced reaction to all the pieces and it ended up being one of the best exhibitions I've seen. (This would probably have been the case regardless though I think)
