LOL THATCHER'S DEAD LOL
Daily Mail will be pleased
It's absolutely gutless.
It's like finding out there are two ways of wiping your arse and theo does it the same way as you.
you're tempering our outrage!
It's a bit daft really - kind of smacks of the kind of attempt at a compromise non-decision that's got them into a Newsnight shaped mess recently.
it is just a song.
P.s were they a team? Platoon or squadron didn't sound right.
who'd a thunk it?
The point stands though.
'bout fucking time
changed their mind did they? They can't win, if they play it they are left wing biased and disrespectful to the dead. If they don't play it they are right wing biased and clamping down on freedom of expression.
I can't believe anyone is such a dick they have gone out of their way to actually buy this.
is disrespectful to a large percentage of the population
it doesn't have to have any political agenda, just has to be an honest representation of the weekly chart.
you throw a party or a bash. Maybe even a get together. But not a funeral.
but the BBC aren't in charge of throwing said funeral. They are showing the whole thing live with a sombre air presumably however, so I think that balances the airing of a 1930s musical song once on a Sunday afternoon quite nicely.
As a composer I do not buy music on the principle that I don't expect anyone to buy my music. I also don't like the song. But I DO like the sentiment. Bravo.

Millan Rajasooriar I would encourage people to complain to the BBC over bias coverage with this article as it fails to represent both camps equally tbh.

Bought it 10 times now. Ill be damned if I let a bunch of unwashed parasites smugly embarrass this country. I was taught to hate Thatcher growing up and yes I did have my milk stopped at school. As an adult though I have grown to realise what we had and the fact the spineless EU loving wonders forced her out, says it all to me. I went from having little, to doing well for myself and its because of Thatchers libertarian leaning, Brand of Natinalist Conservatism that this country recovered to give me that chance.
Let's all tweet Geri Halliwell. She is a fan of Mrs T. We should post something along the lines of "We are inspired that a modern woman, such as yourself, has come out in support of #Thatcher. Please help our campaign...." OR words to the effect. Shamelessly plug this group and the single but make sure the language will appeal and so there is a small chance that she might retweet.
THIS BLOKE WAS BEHIND THE RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE TRACK. WE NEED HIM NOW. PLEASE. PLEASE. PLEASE!
A Winged Victory For The Sullen
somebody call 911
It's just the tone of the explanatory blog that bothers me, the whole 'blah blah grieving family' as if Mark Thatcher's feelings are anything to do with any of this.
There are certain things I found a bit off about the campaign, but it was a protest/intervention against the one sided eulogising of somebody loathed by half the country. If there had been less ostentatious pro-Thatcher grandstanding or a smaller funeral or just a higher profile and more civilised forum for it be acknowledged what a divisive figure she was then I'm not sure this would have happened... it's inevitably people wanted to 'let off some steam' and I don't think censoring a 51-second-song is going to cool tensions.
UK has really jumped the shark

Such a self-parody!
the number of sales you need to get to no. 1 is possible to achieve via a couple of days' moderately successful unfunny internet meme sharing.
They'd get so much less hassle if they just played it in full
To wish it was a subtler and less silly protest song in it's place? Something that made intelligent comment about the human reaction to Thatcher. Somebody could suggest something better than me.
A bunch of grown men and women actually buying something so inane and then clamouring to hear it on a show they wouldn't normally even listen to just sums up the hard left's reaction to the news over the last few days to me. Just fucking grow up.
This more than makes up for the compelte decimation of the Northern economy
Enjoy listening to it on Sunday with a massive grin on your face, then immediately wondering what the hell you're doing with your life.
Are you suggesting that it's just a bit of fun and that people shouldn't take it too seriously?
I dunno, you seem to be getting pretty angry about it. Perhaps you ought to buy the rival single, just to show how petty those on the hard-left really are.
It's obviously not just a bit of fun, it's a political statement.
It's just a ridiculously lame statement to make.
The former? No, I don't think it has any wider implications at all, beyond a 54-second segment of a pretty meaningless radio show.
The latter? Yes, definitely. A state broadcaster being harangued into complying with a group's political views because they don't want to be offended is a pretty dangerous precedent.
Everyone's crying because they can't have their bit of glee.
I'm embarrassed for the lot of you.
It's in an awkward position where - whatever it ends up doing - it's going to be accused of having taken a side in all this. The BBC - and other UK media - complying with a group's political views because they don't want to be offended isn't a new precedent here. It's happened a few times over recent years (nobody reshowing the cartoons in the Danish cartoons controversy being the most obvious example).
The most ridiculous thing in all this is that a news broadcast explaining why a song is politically-charged (and probably makes the protesters' point) way more politically charged than an apolitical song from a 1930s musical...
just those who have tried to shut this down.
Just play it as part of the top40 as if it's totally normal, without mentioning it at all, which is what they should and would have done. The era of downloads means that we have old songs popping into the charts for trolling reasons quite regularly (eg PJ and Duncan the other week).
that they won't play something if it makes explicit reference to a sensitive topic in the news? don't know why people thought this was anything other than a non-starter. also, who cares?
but it's been a very long time since they didn't play a 'hit' song in the top40 rundown because of what's happening in the news.
and bought a single en masse simply because it celebrated someone's death? it's almost unprecedented.
You'd have to be someone pretty special to engender that level of feeling in so many people...
madness, that aint a public service. Spin the track.
this is a very Guardian thing to get offended at.
I think everyone's a winner here.
I'm from the states. I get that so many many people hated her, but that would be like our radio broadcasting special programming celebrating the death of George Bush. Don't get me wrong, I'm aware of the terrible way things went because of her, but y'know things are gonna be what they are. We have a republican party that always says no to Obama's yes without fail just because he's black. Plus I'm from Detroit, a shithole within a shithole, so I know misery from a couple different angles. So just dig the ding dong at home & let it go. The new Fall lp is coming soon, it'll seem better then.
if it was something like Frank Turner's "Thatcher Fucked The Kids" then maybe I'd get it, but this song is only offensive because of context. So I'd say play the full song then maybe explain why it's there
"NURSE get the straightjacket quickly, we have a dangerous thinker here"
there were two good witches and two bad witches in Oz
The most popular records bought by the British public. Just report the fucking facts.
User in a Harry Enfield 'Kevin and Perry' way.
OH NOO, OH GOD NO THEY WON'T PLWAAY A SONG, OH GOD NOO!!! :-D
for NON chart hits in the middle of the Top 10?? since when?! Little Mix feature on the go as we speak. what, as they say, is that all about?
