What to do in... Stoke Newington!
Thinking of saving up and heading over to Stoke Newington next weekend, soak up some nice weather, maybe take in a bit if culture, hit some nice bars. Anyone ever been there? Recommendations?
(No, seriously, I'm going to go to Stoke Newington this weekend. Where's good to eat and drink? Bear in mind I don't want to queue for two hours or be patronised by a neck-tattooed haircut.)
"Saving up and heading over to Stoke Newington" :D
Kebab crawl
In all seriousness
Stoke Newington's great. Go to Clissold Park, go to that cemetery, get some Turkish food from somewhere, go to one of the dozen or so great pubs there are... great place to spend a day.
Depending on the weather the gravyard is good to have a walk through. Lots of places to eat on Church Street obviously. Go see the animals in Clissold Park.
it's Playhouse at the Drop on Saturday evening

The only pub worth bothering with is The Rochester Castle
NO
I do like it in there tbf
I love the place.
Serious other answers would be: Ryans Bar, The Auld Sheelauaioshghl8i, Sir Dan Defoe.
The clientele are pretty incredible
I've been there before when staying with a friend who lives down there
One bloke in the corner starts doing loud, pseudo-operatic singing for what felt like an eternity, then wobbled over to our table to inform us he was an alcoholic who'd recently had a heart bypass, and that this was his first night 'back' since. Bleak.
foodwise you can pretty much take your pick
lots of amazing places on church st. Rasa for indian, mercado for mexican, il bacio for italian are some faves.
Pubwise you've got the likes of the jolly butchers for super hip, amazing choice of obscenely priced beers, or more traditional boozers like the daniel defoe, but pretty much you can't go wrong.
mercardo is rubbish
i've been plenty of times
and it can be hit or miss, but when it's good it's amazing. i think it's changed hands a lot.
Mercado's isn't too bad.
I went to El Camion in Soho last week and it was appalling.
They didn't even do fajitas ffs.
Lots of cruisers in this thread
I don't want to queue for two hours or be patronised by a neck-tattooed haircut
I think you might have mixed up Stoke Newington with somewhere else.
You're more likely to spend the time avoiding pushchairs than fixies
Take a minor detour
And visit the Sylvanian Families shop. That place is a-ma-zing.
I haven't been there yet myself but i have it on good authority it's incredible/terrifying
I see it every day
They don't change the window display often enough.
Your Saturday night:
Drinks at the Rochester Castle, dancing at Playhouse, Kebab from City Kebabs.
(But if you insist on not doing that, eat at Rasa [great Keralan food] and drink at the Jolly Butcher.)
Good shout for the Rochester.
^this
especially Rasa. Both are great.
You and City Kebabs *tsks*
That place is a hole.
Troija is where it's at
It's so much nicer than Troija
Though I have only tried Troija once. Maybe they were having an off night.
Troija's cheeseburgers are great
City Kebab does amazing salad wraps
It doesn't sound like much, but they're so good. Loads of different salad items, a thick splodge of humous, hot chilli sauce and a few chips. So good.
Not a fan of Troija.
The kebabs look absolutely delicious, but they're just completely tasteless.
Healthy kebabs don't work.
Nonsense
Their kebabs are beautiful
go for a meal in Testi
I've been there.
Bit of a mouthful..
eat:
floyds (not really in stoke newington)
the black pig with the white pearls(crap service and expensive but nice)
testi (the best turkish in the world, no question)
drink:
pubs
have you been to Turkey?
He said THE WORLD
turkeys in the world, silly. Meths knows
The Yucatan
DiS types always welcomed
Ah The Tan's awesome.
For footie watching and late night shenanigans.
Wouldn't go in for a couple of quiet beers though.
Love the Yucatan
must have changed then?
used to be dangerous as fuck
I've been drinking (kinda) in the Yuc since I was about 6 years old.
Never known it to be a dangerous or scary place. I've known to have that rep, but I think the truth is just has some more gnarled clientele who don't put up with shit. The family that run it are mental but sound.
boozin
since the age of 6?
YUC 4 LYFE
Love the Yuc.
Our practice studio is pretty much opposite, so I always head there early for a quick beer.
Heinekin is £340 for a pint!
Stoke Newington's really gentrified now, isn't it?
Sheet - didn't see that.
Was in the Yutacan at the weekend
Made the mistake of leaning against the wall. Stood up to find some unidentified sticky substance covering my entire back
Yutacan?
Go there on the train's that Maggie privatised.
Take a walk around Abney Park Cemetary - bonus points for spotting gay dudes cruising
I usually eat at Testi which is boss (though not as good as Tads in Hackney) or Il Baccio for pizza. If you want to mix it up, try The Traditoria de Luigi which is by the same people as Il Bacio but it more traditional Sardinian food. Homa is pretty nice too. If there later at night Troija do the best take away kebabs. Itto does nice if no longer quite as reasonable pan asian fare.
Pubs - my faves are in order - Shillelagh, Jolly Butchers (only expensive if you order something like Brooklyn), Daniel Defoe, White Hart, The Birdcage. There's also a Belgian beer place called Jans on Northwold Road, which despite being opposite my house I've never been too cos it looks weird, but apparently has a huge selection of beers. The Shakespeare is also nice and lets you bring pizza from the place next door. Three Crowns is nice but a bit pricey. Have never understood the love for Ryan's personally
Go to Akdeniz and get loads of meze stuff and olives from their olive counter and go and chill out in Clissold Park. If you're there earlier enough Cafe Z do the *best* breakfast - especially Turkish or Menemen. There's a farmer's market at the church by the bagel house on Saturdays too.
The leisure centre also has an adequate swimming pool and a very good gym
Ryans has got the garden, and puts on some cool gigs.
Also a good sports pub.
Ah the Z cafe
happy days
Luigis is good but they've turned the backroom into a shit club
so you sometimes get booming music filtering through and a steady stream of smokers coming in and out. Doesn't really fit the trattoria mood...
PLAYHOUSE
DUH
The Shakespeare is the best pub
I was in The Shakespeare a couple of weeks ago
Saw the delightful sight of a Buddhist monk hugging John Power from Cast
My mates went here all the bloody time for ages
now I'm sick of it
I was in Clissold Park on Saturday.
I enjoyed it.
^ The Egyptian geese have (Egyptian) goslings at the moment
if you like that sort of thing.
Waddle like an Egyptian
Go to the toilet then
strong
you could get on a train and go to another part of london
^this
BUT THAT'S NOT WHAT HE ASKED, MOMOFACE.
Collect the post from my old flat?
DON'T
just spent nearly three hours on the phone to hmrc trying to get them to stop sending stuff to, in alternating cycles, the f;lat I live in two years ago, and the flat I recently vacated and which now lies empty in London for 8 weeks out of 10. Especially not the activaton code I need to do my tax return that is nearly three months late. (because they keep sending my activation code to the wrong place).
I was not a nice person on the phone, especially not after that lambrini.
Go to
the pram shop
Rasa.
cannot believe no-one's mentioned this yet.
i did
hmpf!
Sorry!
Should've done a cursory ctrl+f before I stormed in, guns blazing: 'I CAN'T BELIEVE NONE OF YOU FUCKERS HAVE MENTIONED THIS FINE ESTABLISHMENT!!'.
...I'll see myself out.
Is this a joke?
Nandos is a popular choice with the locals
just buy a guidebook
Please believe me when I tell you
You will be doing yourself a massive disservice if you don't go and try the divine cuisine served at the Coach and Horses at the end of Church Street. Seriously, it's the best frickin' Thai in London.
After that I don't care what you do, just make sure you go there.
