That's a very sad loss. RIP - great writer
A fine man.
I think one reason I liked him as a critic was no matter much I agreed with his opinion, he almost always offered a damn good reason why he thought that way, making it hard to complain.
Sad about this news, he was an excellent reviewer and hugely dedicated to what he did. RIP
Definitely my favourite film critic
when people talk about how criticism can be a valid literary form unto itself. Some of his pieces were absolute gems. RIP
and get some insight from the writing that I hadn't picked up on when watching the movie.
' The movie also loves some of its characters, and pities them, and has an ear for dialog not as it is spoken but as it is dreamed.
Many of the scenes in "No Country for Old Men" are so flawlessly constructed that you want them to simply continue, and yet they create an emotional suction drawing you to the next scene. Another movie that made me feel that way was "Fargo." To make one such film is a miracle. Here is another.'(No Country For Old Men)
I also loved his review of Ballistics: Ecks vs Sever where he delivers the line 'it is.. it is.. it is.. unusually bad"
''I know it is coming, and I do not fear it, because I believe there is nothing on the other side of death to fear. I hope to be spared as much pain as possible on the approach path. I was perfectly content before I was born, and I think of death as the same state. What I am grateful for is the gift of intelligence, and for life, love, wonder, and laughter. You can't say it wasn't interesting. My lifetime's memories are what I have brought home from the trip. I will require them for eternity no more than that little souvenir of the Eiffel Tower I brought home from Paris''
R.I.P. Huge influence on my decision to write about film.
The first thing I do after watching any film is see what his take on it was, I didn't always agree with it but it was always engaging and beautifully written and most importantly backed up whatever opinion he was providing with compelling enough reasons to make you consider your own opinion.
Life Itself has been on my to-read list for a while now, time to bump it up in priority I think.
only on tuesday he said hed be slowin down :(
