Imagine ruining their lives like that.
I like that my completely arbitrary dislike of any and everything associated with Twitter is, despite being pretty stupid and irrational, regularly vindicated.
Now you know how non-Chelsea fans feel.
I'll go full moker, I fucking swear I'll do it.
not sure why but I can't help cracking up over this.
How very hetero-normative of you.
wasn't fired and "remains a valuable employee". Way to not suck, that guys company.
<whispers>because you suck
is the irony of a bunch of men laying into her about finding the 'joke' sexist and thus proving conclusively that she was right.
too little too late Theo.
too little too late.
I can understand finding it offensive but not sexist
it wasn't so much the joke as the context and the way he was acting.
that it's an environment in which people are comfortable making jokes that may make others feel uncomfortable.
Also, their joke didn't make sense as dongles are supposed to be small and unobtrusive.
" no sexual jokes were made about forking. My friends and I had decided forking someone’s repo is a new form of flattery (the highest form being implementation) and we were excited about one of the presenters projects; a friend said “I would fork that guys repo” The sexual context was applied by Adria, and not us."
I don't think she should have to grin and bear it and the chap in question already has admitted she was in the right but I do think the companies actions were not in proportion.
it's late also this was meant to be a reply to Theo's comment.
She makes it plain she didn't intend for him to lose his job.
Yet she's the target of the abuse and not the guy's former employers, which is really what I meant about it backing up her point more than anything else.
most of the people commenting on the story largely seem to have this weird deference to private companies and have absolved both companies involved from any blame.
I realized I had to do something or she would never have the chance to learn and love programming because the ass clowns behind me would make it impossible for her to do so.
I work in this industry and have followed this closely. It's a total fuckup really. There's no way anyone should have been fired over this incident, but equally the woman who spoke up (albeit in a weird way) has been subjected to some pretty nasty shit as a result of it.
There's a big problem in "tech" with sexism. Arguably no worse than in many other industries but it's compounded by the attitude of many men who believe that either there is no problem worth addressing or that they are simply too smart to be sexist and so refuse to analyse their own behaviour.
this is the second thread that has made me feel proud of the place i work (which is tech).
Our main board is 40% female
HQ employees are 49% female and 51% male
Our management team (excluding CEO) is 50% female and 50% male
Pretty fucking awesome right?
But you talk to any of the women here who've made their way through tech and they all have horrific stories of being isolated and subjected to prejudice for being women in this industry
Out of interest, do you know how many of the women are doing programming/general comp-sci related jobs?
there are a couple of women in the back-end labs department (which has a total of 8), but for front end and UI work it's a 50/50 split which is better.
I've seen a couple more women being interviewed for labs today to i suspect that number will get better
i kinda hate the workload here but the people are best.
"Go the conference they said. It would be fun they said."
and everyone knows sexual innuendo is the WORST form of comedy. SO ALL 3 SHOULD BE FIRED
Star Wars references are the highest form of humour. The tradition dates back to Shakespeare (The Winter's Tale: Holiday Special).
the description, now THAT is annoying

You're a code monkey, get over yourself.
As much as it might sound self-important or whatever, usually an evangelist's job is to engage with external developers, solicit feedback about APIs, help people setup etc. Sometimes it's called Developer Advocate or whatever. I know some people who are really good at this.
And some of the best developers / managers I've worked with have been women. And there's never been any prejudice against them from me or any other men. Maybe I'm in the minority but I've work in finance, education and media.
Her blog irritated the shit out of me, going into detail about how she would get them identified by using Twitter. FUCK OFF YOU SELF-IMPORTANT SHITE.
"Women in technology need consistant [sic] messaging from birth through retirement they are welcome, competent and valued in the industry,"
wow what a shitstorm
1. she is a fucking moron
and harness their shared bitterness to crush their former employers
