Commerce will save us all
is now something that is marketed by our society...dont do things communally, do all things through an aconomic transaction.....it is hive mind.
Be part of a real community that you are happier in, would actually be truer individualism, doing endeavors mutually through consent of each, rather than because it is the norm of consumer society is far more liberating.
The wording of the OP is confused as it is not that simple. It is modern society that cannot tolerate people being really free (i.e. free from monetary economics........to get people to tolerate this, buyable lifestyles are marketed)
There are of course too many people in the world to be able to be supported (in the immediate future) if the current system collapses, and therefore maintaining the status quo is desirable to almost all, because none of us would willingly change something that would result in the loss of say half the human race, (billions), of course that would be monstrous. And so we all aquiesce, because we know that resistance and rebellion is futile, that ultimately to do this would result in something that we could not countenance (the loss of billions)
PS the only reason that I keep on banging on about it all collapsing, is because it has all become structually unstable, all the support systems of the global economy are now under stress with feedbacks that put stress on other parts, so I think that you will find that the sorts of freedoms that people will have will change in the next few years....not necessarily for the better, other things will curtail human freedom instead.
Actually make any progress, yes.
